Looking for a new wallet recommendation for < $350. Help!

Hi GAF.

So after my drivers license literally fell out of my wallet today, I've come to accept that it's time to retire my decade-old, tattered wallet. I'd like to do something a little more interesting than a black bi-fold and thought I'd hit up GAF for recommendations.

Conditions (Preferences):

  • I know these things can get really expensive (for whatever reason), but I'd like to keep it south of $350. If it's approaching my limit, it better be really fuckin dope. $150-$200 would be preferred.
  • I'd like it to be able to hold ~6 cards. Driver's license, a few credit cards, concealed carry firearm license, insurance card, stuff like that. They don't have to all be visible at the same time; just need space for them.
  • Needs to have somewhere to put emergency cash. A few hundred dollar bills for example. Not sure there are card cases that can also hold a little cash, but open to being surprised.
  • Preferably not a solid color unless it is really nice, meaningfully unique.
  • I don't care about name brands, but am not opposed to them either. Capacity, look and quality are most important.
  • I buy wallets once a decade; I'd like it to not be something I look at with regret 5 years from now like a bad tattoo or something.
  • Not really looking for cartoons and definitely nothing that could be confused for anime...
  • ...but lots of colors and/or patterns are fine.
  • The slimmer the better. Anything will be thinner than my current wallet situation which I am embarrassed to say is ~25mm (1") thick.

That's really it.

My first stop was Hard Graft (https://www.hardgraft.com/) because I've bought items from them before that I was really happy their quality. The only options that interested me from them were the following:

These all look really nice to me, but are still maybe slightly more conservative than I'd like to be this go-round. Still just the basic colors, though with some interesting designs. I'd like it to stand out a little more when I reach for it. Unfortunately, I don't know where to look beyond them or what kind of options are out there. But I know GAF does.

So...any recommendations, GAF?

You're buying a brand and real leather isn't less likely to prevent cards or cash falling out than anything else if the design sucks

I buy cheap ass wallets for 20 or less from convenience stores and they have all kinds of storage and zip up and everything. Literally do everything those pictured wallets do if not more.

Less likely to get stolen I'd think too. If the wallet itself is balling well...

Just get some cheap shit with lots of pockets that zips up.

My parents got me a leather wallet from JCPenney for around $30 about 17-18 years ago, and it's still held up. What makes these so much better that they cost 10 times as much? I wouldn't be opposed to getting a new one because those do look really nice.

Some people are comfortable spending money for high quality and known brands because those items bring them greater joy and have specifics that people are seeking.

The cheapest wallet that's on my radar for when I need to upgrade is around 80.

This card holder looks real good:

I don't know anything about wallets. I have a Mancini. I got it as a gift, so I don't know how much it was but it doesn't seem very likely it was much outside of the $50 CAD range. It holds 8 cards, and I've been using it for 25+ years and it's still going. If it ever wears out I wouldn't have any problems buying a new one from the same maker.

Just go to Sears and get a standard leather wallet for like $20. It'll last you a decade if you don't accidentally wash it or something.

Do people actually pay more than $50 for a wallet?

Spending a little more is worth it. A genuine leather wallet (like the ones from Saddleback) will cost at least $50-$100, but will last pretty much forever.

That $20 wallet is going to fall apart.

I use a Bellroy, can't remember the specific model name but it's pretty small whilst managing to hold a number of cards with notes and coins.

Thanks for putting me on to the brand you posted OP.

Check out Burberry's collection https://us.burberry.com/mens-wallets/

happy to do so. Hard Graft's stuff is really dope.

I'll give burberry a look.

Holy shit! $350 for a wallet?

Just go buy this one.

design is not bad, but you'd be surprised how different better quality leather looks, feels and lasts. It's like buying a good pair of wingtips. Sure you could buy a pair of $75 wingtips, but there is a marked difference between them and the $800 pair of wingtips that are so comfortable and good looking that you will resole them before replacing them.

thanks for the tip. will look into now.

edit: oh i love their color options already.

I have a V2 crabby minimal wallet I bought a few years ago. Minimal and helps you cut back on what you need to carry. They have different materials now. Not good for cash though, I just put cahs in another pocket or fold it up.

My last wallet was genuine leather from Sears and it lasted almost 20 years until I accidentally walked into the Gulf of Mexico with it in the pocket of my swimming trunks. Salt water and leather just don't mix.

Yeah but you're not wearing your wallet on your feet. It's just an accessory, to hold shit, in your pocket.

I had to read the title a few times. I'm all for buying expensive products especially for something that gets used daily, but damn. That's just advertising for someone to steal from you tbh.

So buy 10 and donate $100 to Green Peace. Solved!

Real answer is (as always with men's fashion) something simple, functional and understated that will last. Having something modern or trendy looking that lasts forever is like buying a real nice leather fringed jacket.

Has real leather versus others been scientifically tested?

I have had the same fossil wallet that probably cost like 50 bucks for about 15 years now and I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon.

Meanwhile...

20, lasted over a year so far, still looks amazing. Nothing loose or lost.

Best gift my daughters ever got me.

I got a black 3 fold tommy hilfiger wallet as a present which I think cost around $50 and its been great for the last 10 years and hasnt aged all that much.

350? Shit man. Buy a used car and just keep your money in that.
