MoviePass (Unlimited Films in Theaters) Drops to $9.95 a Month

No e-ticketing pretty much means I would never use this for a movie i want to see day 1 or very close to the release, unless I want to have the worst seats in the theater. It's pretty good for those "eh, I'll watch it eventually" movies since by then you could get decent seats when just showing up at the theater.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
So you watch a 1000+ movies an year? You’re quite the bad ass

I underestimated the amount of overlap but it's still closer to 300.
I've gone over 100 most years of my life, sometimes by a lot.

Dumb question: can I use my pass as soon as I sign up? Meaning I can bring my phone and show purchase? Assuming no...
Only if the theater uses e-ticketing.

For me, this isn't an issue. I live literally across the street from the theater I usually go to, so it's no inconvenience for me to stop by earlier in the day to buy my ticket ahead of time.

So first time using MoviePass today, had no idea it also covered IMAX (though I had to still pay $4) but considering it's a $20 ticket, already paid for itself and then some

Wow it works for IMax?
Ehhhh... Not exactly.
In the app, some IMAX show times will be available because they weren't properly flagged. So you can check in. But when you go to pay, you'll have to use your own debit or credit card to pay the difference between whatever is loaded onto the MP card (likely the price of a normal ticket) and the IMAX price.
So... it works... but it's not always...

After my first week of binge catch-up, I think I'll only see 1 maybe two movies a week now. I want to start patronizing the uni theater again as well.

Love this service and hope they get a bundle/family plan going in the next few months.

is there a way to reserve seats using the movie pass app, some of the theaters where i live have the option to reserve seats before going to the theater.
I'm wondering how this works myself?

Can you just pay with the card at the ticket kiosk, orrr?
It works the same as going to see a movie with any credit card - you choose your seat either at the kiosk or the ticket booth when you buy the ticket.

yea but you realize you are in the minority.

Of course. I would have been much more hesitant about it if my situation was like most others'. This isn't a good subscription to see brand new movies on opening weekend. Especially at theaters with reserved seating.

I wasn't going to movies on opening night before this anyway, so nothing changed for me. That said, I can still get decent seats on opening night if I wanted (not that I expected mother! to be sold out), except probably for the big marketing event movies.

The major drawback is planning for group viewings. You can't have one person book the tickets for now.

The value is still just too good to pass up.

I've seen almost every movie at my theater with this thing. Plus, with rewards, every time my wife wants to come along, her ticket is usually free.

I will be flabbergasted if this lasts a full year. In terms of the data they are collecting for their main source of profit, won't it be inherently skewed anyway because having the pass is going to change the user's usual movie-going habits? Like, I bought a ticket to Leap while I was walking by the theater just to get some reward points. I would never watch a movie like that on my own initiative.

I'm sure they're prepared to lose a ton of money with the goal of building up a high enough subscription base that they'll have the power to negotiate with theaters to cut their costs in exchange theaters getting more people in.

Wait, what? Any confirmation of this?

Just logged into AMC's site and it's not showing the most recent two movies I went to (yesterday and today) under my tickets page at https://www.amctheatres.com/amcstubs/tickets. Both which I purchased at the kiosk. So I think you may be right... or hopefully it's just delayed?

That'd be really weird if you're right, what's the point of putting in your Stubs card then if it doesn't do anything? =/

Just went to AMC and bought a ticket via the kiosk and got my print out about my pending points. The guy behind the counter was not being cool about it.

Signed up on the 16th of August and have still received no card. Two people I live with who signed up after me both have theirs. I've emailed them 8 times and received no response. Genuinely don't know what to do.

Disagree, back when it was $35 a month I subscribed, I saw every big movie opening weekend without issue. Note: I rarely ever see a movie at night, I generally prefer the first showing in the morning when the theater is the least crowded. Now, if you want to see a midnight launch of a huge movie, then of course you probably can't use the MoviePass card. But I've even seen some new movies at 7pm with the service, just show up like a half hour before it starts and you'll be fine. And if not, oh well, fork over the money, you're only paying $10 a month for this :)

Not really? There's not many movies that are truly packed on opening weekend. Maybe if all you see is comic book movies and Star Wars, that would be true.

I just signed up again with a second email address. It's been over a month and I'm still without my card, and I honestly expect the second card to arrive first. I wouldn't be so upset if it weren't for my girlfriend having her card for weeks now despite ordering hers days after me. She can go whenever she wants, but I can't.

Why couldn't they just give me the option to reactivate my card from February?

So, it doesn't really matter what theater or movie you see as long as you load the card near a theater and swipe within 30 minutes.

I checked in a theater in one town for a movie but found out all the good seats were taken so I went to the local theater when I got home, which is about 30 miles or so away. I went to the kiosk and swiped my card and it worked fine. I'm guessing as long as you check in, it will load your card and you can purchase whatever ticket you want, maybe even 3D if you pay the difference

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
So this thing is great. I've used is several times now, even to see movies I wasn't really interested in. American Assassin sucks by the way. Don't bother... well you can bother but this is more about saving your time than your money.

The money disappears from the card in 30 minutes if unused, so it'd have to be fairly close. And if MoviePass sees that their credit card was used at a business that's not on their list, they'll of course ban that account (and possibly take legal action), but you should probably be fine switching from one supported theater to another.

I watched mother! and,Annabelle Creation, which I never would've otherwise.
Really liked mother!.

Will watch Spider-Man Homecoming every week it's still in theaters.

you preferring a showing of a big movie at a time slot that the majority of people do not is really besides the point.

also,
where do you live? whenever a big movie comes out where I am, you gotta get your tickets ahead for the whole weekend (all late afternoon and evening showtimes) usually or the only seats left are the front rows. you cant just show up 30 minutes before or you will only be able to get the front row seats.

Not really? There's not many movies that are truly packed on opening weekend. Maybe if all you see is comic book movies and Star Wars, that would be true.

seriously, where do people live that the movie theater isnt packed on opening weekend for big movies?

It doesn't matter in the sense it's a debit card that can be used anywhere (not even just theaters), but MoviePass can definitely see where the money is getting spent and tie it back to you.

Noticed a bit of fuckery going on with my AMC Stubs points since I started using MoviePass three days ago.

Here is my ticket stub from yesterday, I had 12,034 total points and 1,149 pending points (so a total of 13,183):
AE4VEUz.jpg

Logged in to check the updated points balance and I noticed that points were actually removed rather than added. Had 899 points missing from the "earned" section and all 1,149 pending points gone too for a total of 2,048 missing points.
EZAfIpM.png

Then I contacted AMC and they acknowledged an "error that is removing points" and will look into it further:
ySySPLu.png

Hopefully it's just some kind of glitch, but seeing as how AMC has been anti-MoviePass, I'm not so sure, the timing seems a bit too coincidental. Another person direct messaged me shortly afterwards and said he's having the same exact issue and is also a MoviePass user, so it's not just me.

I would recommend that those who are using MoviePass in combination with their AMC Stubs pay close attention to their Stubs points totals before and after just in case.

Just checked my account and yep, it looks like I've lost points too. I'm stubs premier and dropped from 20something thousand to 19,000 and I just saw mother yesterday. Looks like they've caught on.

AMC would just see it as a MasterCard transaction, they can't tell if you're using MoviePass from their end at all, unless they banned all MasterCards. Which would end poorly.

I think chip readers are able to get a bit more info than just MC. I've seen the bank issuing a card on the chip reader display before (i.e. *Bank* Visa). It's possible they can ID it being from moviepass.

Well this is not an outright ban, just preventing from earning points with their loyalty rewards card.

As far as I know every MoviePass card starts with the same first four digits (5336) so it should be fairly easy for AMC to figure out who is using it. Especially if that customer started using that card in the last month or so. (Of course there'd probably be some false positives with non-MoviePass cards that also start with 5336.)

Just saw Mother! Because of the mixed reviews, I'd probably would never have seen it. Thanks to all the online blurbs of pissed off crowds and the critical acclaim, moviepass made it an easy choice. Really enjoyed it, and man am I thankful for this service.

I saw It the first Sunday it was out last week. All I did was go to the theater in the morning, picked an afternoon showing, and I was in good seats. Gonna use all the money I'm saving on The Last Jedi lol.

Yeah about 7k points disappeared from my AMC stubs too, hopefully its just the double points. Their system is atrocious though, there is no way to see a history of points or where it came from so its hard to tell how anything works.

TAJ

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
I saw a couple movies at a Regal location a little further away and their ticket printer has a dead spot that makes it so one number of the rewards code is always missing.

It's been exactly one week since I activated and my tickets have cost MoviePass $47 so far, lol.

No charge

So you haven't been charged $10? Did you get an email saying you signed up? Funny because I was charged $10 for both of my accounts on the 16th, so something doesn't sound right. That said I never got an email for one of the accounts I signed up for, so who knows what their system did that day.

They just can't deny purchase via MC. You can most certainly identify the issuer which you could then deny rewards to.

Dallas. Other than comic book movies and Star Wars movies or similarly huge franchises like the Fast series, you can pretty easily get good seats to films just showing up 20-30 minutes before the show starts on opening week.

c. Ineligible Purchases. The following purchases or products are NOT eligible toward earning points or redemption of rewards:
AMC pre-paid discount, bulk or exchange tickets, Show Snack Coupons, passes or free admissions of any sort, subscriptions (including Movie Pass) or other discounted or bulk purchase items, either at the time of purchase OR time of redemption.

Glad I don't bother with AMC at all with how garbage their response has been to MoviePass.

Hoping today is the day after one month and two days of waiting for my card.

edit: Nope.

Yesterday I forgot to show my Stubs card at my local theater and emailed them with a scan of my movie ticket. The points are already in my account.

How are they going to stop this method without making Stubs Premiere customer service useless?

If they start discriminating at the kiosk I'll just start doing it this way I assume.

Well there it is. Those fuckers. Unfortunately AMC is the only real option in my area, but I won't be renewing my Stubs Premiere card if this continues. No point in paying $15 if I can't earn any points going forward.

Whatever methods they're using to determine MoviePass purchases can also be used to block the CS reps from crediting your account for those tickets. Or they can just be removed from your account afterwards. Even if this method works right now, I don't expect that workaround to last long.
