Campus police shoot and kill LGBT activist armed with knife at university

http://m.independent.ie/world-news/...-armed-with-knife-at-university-36142770.html

Police at a US university shot and killed the president of the Pride Alliance student group on Saturday night in full view of dorm residents.

According to reports police encountered Scout Schultz, a 21-year-old computer engineering student who identified as neither male nor female, in a parking lot outside the dorms at Georgia Tech University.
Someone had earlier called 911 to report "a person with a knife and a gun," according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

I saw the footage and he/she was told numerous times to stand still and drop the knife and he kept shouting, "Kill me" with no lack of control and continued to head towards to the police.
I got the impression the activist wanted to be shot.

It would be great if police were forced to use non-lethal weapons but I think this individual would have found another way to end it.

Hmm, you might want to reword this post. I don't think he/she is accepted terminology.

Then again I'm probably not the best judge for this

Explain exactly why they had to use a gun? They might get a cut on their arm, or something? Ridiculous police work from America as always.

Suicide by cop, though it's kinda sad that you can do that so easily, that there's no fail rate here in the u.s.
Yeah you'd think it's common enough that there'd be like... Training or protocol for dealing with those situations. But why do that when it's easier to just shoot when someone asks you to, right?

Knives are lethal weapons. Even a 'small student' could easily kill somebody with a slice or stab in the right area.

Per the article, the student didn't respond to officers and continued to advance upon them despite numerous verbal warnings.

There is plenty of unjustified violence and outright murder by police in America, but this isn't one of those cases.

Might get a cut on the arm? You can easily kill someone with a knife. It would be ideal if they have some non-lethal measures like a taser or something but this was a seemingly highly dangerous situation.

If someone has a knife and is threatening you with it...it doesn't matter how big your muscles are mate. You still turn the other cheek.

Can't police ... not kill even if the intent was suicide by cop?

In this scenario?

I knew a girl who was 5'3'' at most who killed her hulked-out football player boyfriend with a knife. Movies and games have really undersold how dangerous (and easy to use) knives are.

Though I'm not sure why the cops didn't have stun guns or some such.

Can we stop saying suicide by cop likes it's fucking acceptable? What is wrong with you people. Suicide by cop is an American invention, and generally does not need to happen.

They brought him down with a gunshot when a taser or pepper spray would have been more than sufficient.

Suicide by cop. What a disgusting thing that it's even in our vernacular.

Or they might be stabbed in the chest Nd take serious damage to a organ.

Yes, they could maybe have found a non fatal solution, but there is a line somewhere where use of force becomes justifiable, and if you're deliberately approaching police officers with a deadly weapon (which is what the knife is in this case, I'm assuming it's not a standard butter knife), is past that line for me.

However, yes, they should be equipped with and trained in the use of non-lethal things like tasers so that the use of a firearm isn't the only choice they have. (Assuming they aren't already)

In the UK they would either be talked out of doing anything, tazed, or wrestled to the ground. Even if a firearm team had to respond the guns would never be used.

It's called training. There was no need for anybody to die here.

You ever been approached with a knife? You can get a fatal wound in half a second no problem.

Not saying American cops aren't overly trigger happy but you don't fuck around with knives.

Really shitty situation to put a police officer in, but I'm not sure the police handled it as best they could. The footage I've seen is obscured by a tree so it's hard to judge if the kid raised his arm or ran at the officer for him then to open fire.

Ive personnly seen this exact situation in the UK where a guy wouldn't drop a knife and repeatedly tried to goad officers into attacking him, which was ended with him being tazered and hogtied before been carried to the back of a police van.

Jokes on you, bro. Roughly 20% of the reason I lift is to make myself impervious to knife attacks.

70% is to look diesel.

5% is for health.

And the last 5% is also to look diesel

I think the police need a little more training when it comes to this kind of situation, but, its still a knife

cant blame the cops for this one

It's justified in this country, but if it was UK , Germany, France, etc he wouldn't be able to goad the police into shooting him so easily with a knife. It's just strange how easy it is.

"Why not just shoot the leg?"

Police do some evil shit on the daily in this country. But if there's any situation I'm willing to give benefit of the doubt on, it's one like this. Scout kept advancing, with a knife, ignoring warnings.

The fact that some people are suggesting that Scout is small, thus "the knife couldn't be so dangerous" is telling.

EDIT: OMG, someone said "shoot her in the leg" seriously. That's crazy lmao

You are one hell of a shitty cop if you can't disarm such a person without killing him.

Who am I kidding, they could do it but they are too trigger happy.

They could ... maybe, shoot her in the leg? Back up? Pepper spray? Talk her down? Restrain her?

What do I know, though.

Look at the article:

”Come on man, let's drop the knife," an officer with his gun drawn says in the graphic video. But Schultz walks toward him.

”Shoot me!"
The officer keeps backing up, moving behind a parking barricade and imploring again: ”Nobody wants to hurt you, man."

At least four officers had surrounded Schultz by then, according to WSB-TV. In the dorm-window video, one of the officers called out to the student, who consequently turned away from the barricade and began to move toward the new voice.

They talked, moved back, and called for backup. It wasn't an itchy trigger finger situation.

Knives are deadly weapons. Surprised so many people think it'll just be a cut. Nah, you can easily, EASILY kill with knives.

Clearly this person was not in a good state of mind and wanted to die. It's a shame they got their wish.
