Nurse at Naval Hospital Taking Racist Photos with Newborns

I've read that story and I read the WaPo story earlier.
While this is an example of assholery and stupid, I'm not seeing the racism nor did I see it mentioned in either article.

Same. It sounds like they were being despicable, but I can't find any racist stuff.

This thread is giving me a headache.

Listen, these ladies are terrible people that deserve to be fired. But I can't make out the race of those babies. This thread is the only reporting of the incident that even mentions race.

According to howdyjacker, you don't need to know the race of the babies for this act to be "absolutely race inspired." The racial ties are "obvious" and "asking for the race of the babies is freaking inconsequential."

Come on! Keep up!

Unfathomable.

She needs to be brought up on charges, kicked out of the military, have every medical license she's ever earned revoked and maybe spend a couple of years in prison.

ok, lets say this isn't about race.

they're physically abusing hours old babies.

and ... whatever kind of abuse it is to call an hours old child a mini satan.
Like I have already said in this thread, they are stupid and behaving recklessly and dangerously with someones hours old newborn baby. They have no right to maintain any kind of job working with children, and should probably face some kind of criminal charge for endangering a newborn like they did. And if they were targeting minority babies then they deserve to be called out for being racist shits to. It's just difficult to determine that last part currently because newborn babies are different colors when born than they will be in a couple of hours to days time.

People call babies little devils or satans sometimes because they cry often and are not easy to deal with.

I have never heard it used in conjunction with race before.

Making the black babies dance to In Da Club is unfortunate, but I still don't think it is out and out racism, just stupidity and a total lack of being a good nurse and respecting those who are entrusted in your care.

This is stupid girl s being stupid. The nurses on question could just as easily been black and it would still be a fireable offense. Unless they were using racial epithets pr outright showing otherwise disdain or abuse based on race, I am going to sit out the racist drumbeating on this one.

Edit: and while they were being a little rough on the babies, some of you have obviously never seen a baby born before. The nurses in the OR/delivery room are anything BUT gentle to newborns, they whip them around, rub them furiously, pull and yank on their limbs, etc. Babies are resilient and not actually made of thin glass, you know.
What the fuck? There's so much wrong here I can't even.

The worst part is when you try and justify the shaking of a newborn. Have YOU ever been in a delivery room? Do you even know what do with a newborn? Do you know this isn't SOP?

Oh lordy I hope you didn't shake your newborn.

The video makes me sick.

So, the story as presented in the OP is confusing because the photos don't make the race of the babies clear, and the linked story doesn't support the thread title. Like maybe I'm missing some more obvious indicator, or maybe these people originally posted unredacted photos that made it more clear (if so definitely do not post them). I'm not seeing anything in the couple of stories about this I checked regarding the race of the babies. If anyone's got a better source please let me know so I can add it to the OP. It'd be nice to discuss the story without this confusion.

When I saw this on the news it was only the picture and they blurred out the baby in the other picture. From the TV the baby in the pic is the same shade as both of my nephews when they were born. Coupled with the language and what she was doing with the baby with the rap music and the lady deleting all of her social media accounts trying to cover her tracks I made the connection. Its because i'm just so damn used to how this plays out 98% of the time and the media is never going to be quick to label anything as racist till some "official" declares it so. Maybe i'm wrong in my assumption and I will own up to that if thats the case.

Let's just be clear here.

We all agree this is bad and she should be fired.

Why is so much of the thread about whether this woman is specifically racist versus just stupid? Why, specifically, is that such an important argument to have?

This is a question for the people who felt it was extremely important to argue that this woman specifically isn't racist.

Let's dial this discussion back to this specific news story. When it comes to law in the US, intent matters with crimes in general and these distinctions are important. When it comes to this specific story however and my opinion on the actions, all we really know 100% are the actions of these two jack asses are fucked up and deserve some sort of punishment and I don't need to know whether the actions were Racist or not to call the actions fucked up.

You're moving the goal posts.

It's fucked up no matter what. But it is undeniably worse if it's motivated by racism.

Jesus fucking Christ, even taking the absurdity away, that's like day fucking one in nursing school. HIPPA laws, you don't post photos with patients or anything really in the hospital. How did this dumb fucker even pass the NCLEX?

Edit: And she will be fired and added to a directory. It will be VERY difficult for her to find any sort of work now

Because it is the only argument that can be had. People have different epistemic norms, and for some, these photos may not be the whole picture (e.g., maybe they felt that way about all kids, but the only ones in the ward were visible minorities).

It is only because the claim is contentious that this thread or the KO nazi got so long. If the discussion was just should the women be fired for abusing babies, taping them, and calling them Satan, then it would have died in a few pages. Because, yeah obviously they should be fired.

I tried to find a link that mentions racism involved here and can find anything , can someone link me where you found that the kids are all from minoritys, i am trying to post this story on another forum and want more details pls.

Reminds me a bit of this, taken to a whole new level...

These young white (female) nurses, both from the South, probably grown up on a farm, totally sheltered to the rest of the world/US...

There seems to be a pattern of sorts here.... "Oops! we didn't think we were being racist" with these high school or college white girls from the South or the Mid West.

I think a mandatory cultural/race study course is in order for some of these Mid-Western, Southern high schools.

You think this woman specifically targeting black babies and demeaning them specifically because of their race would not be important?
Of course it would be important - that is why it is important to be right when making that claim. Otherwise whats the point of discussing real world stories, it would be better to discuss parables and hypotheticals if the actual truth is irrelevant to us.

i've been begging for over 5 years.
Man fuck this piece of shit. These are innocent little babies.

Fuck 2017 man these racists feel so damn comfortable now it makes me sick.

it's not racist to call them mini satans if she's just pissed about babies in general, not because they are black. unless i've missed something, the race angle isn't mentioned in the linked stories.
We're already at the la li lu le lu stage huh

This fucking world

I haven't posted here yet but it's because the thread title says one thing but it's not necessarily supported by the video/pics and apparently nothing is mentioned in the articles.

I could be more real, direct, and clear here but won't due to fear of a ban and no time.

For fucks sake. Fuck that piece of crap. I couldn't imagine how pissed off I'd be if I were the parent and somebody was treating my NEWBORN baby like that. I'm against violence, but in this case....

Anyway, they should lose their jobs and be banned from ever working anywhere near that field again.

Parents should sue the hell out of someone, the hospital, the nurses specifically. Sue the shit out of them now. That shit is unforgivable and no parent would be saying "it's not that bad" in this thread.

Yeah.... I don't think anything can surprise me anymore. I hope she gets fired, sued and blacklisted from ever working at another hospital again. Don't care if she apologizes as that is fucked up and she shouldn't go anywhere near a hospital ever again

This is them being dumb about a taboo word.

It's barely relevant, this is about freaking newborn babies, it's like light years apart. It's freaking babies, its beyond a "whole new level",

Like seriously, it's babies. Throw them in jail, Jesus, at least make sure they are never near any health care or child related job ever.

Baby shaking defense force...i literally can't even..and then to have the nerve to play but I'm pretty progressive guyz!!! card.

At the very least the HIPAA violation alone will make sure they never work in healthcare again. There face will be plastered all over the I ternet for years to come.

Ignoring the obvious racism for a moment as someone in healthcare HIPAA is so constantly drilled into your brain that such an obvious violation seems unfathomable

When I have kids I guess I'll have to look at them 24/7 in the hospital.

Why did you add racism to the title btw? I don't see anything about race in the article.

"I don't care if they are shitty people who do horrible things to people's children, they just can't be racist! Where's the proof????"
i know right! unbelievable!

Whatever. the races of the babies aren't super clear in the pictures, none of the news articles mention race, but if you're anything less than 100% certain the OP's choice to frame this as a clearly race-based incident is accurate, you're defending child abusers and probably a racist yourself.

I mean you could flip the narrative just as easily and ask why is it so vital that these people be racist in addition to being generally awful people mistreating hours-old infants. I don't have a problem calling out racism (I really don't) but the evidence for that so far is kind of weak.

I'm gonna quote a mod post from a couple pages ago

I really, really feel for those parents having to go through this in what should be a happy time.

I wasn't thinking about an incident like this specifically but there are many reasons we didn't let our daughter out of our sight the entire time in the hospital after her birth and my wife even works in healthcare.

Blatant disrespect for new life, along with her position and the responsibility that comes with it.

How warped in the head do you have to be to share something like this in social media and think it'll be fine?

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Hmm, I find the video funny. But I also would understand why some people would me upset over it. However, my daughter is 10 months old and I've used her like a puppet to dance to all sorts of music.
I'll be honest... I read a lot of stupid shit on GAF this year but this one might take it.

Might as well live in different worlds as some Gafers... What the hell man. Disgusting.

She needs to be brought up on charges, kicked out of the military, have every medical license she's ever earned revoked and maybe spend a couple of years in prison.

I genuinely think she should have an investigation. Not sure anything criminal was committed (am not a legal expert) however ethically it's very wrong indeed and she should have the consequences of her actions. Ignorance isn't an excuse and I doubt she is ignorant. She is after all a trained nurse working in the military.

You're the parent. You can have a playful moment with your own child. This "nurse" doing something like this in the absence of the parents + the context of the other photo doesn't exactly inspire confidence in her quality of work or how she's treating these babies when nobody's around.

HIPAA is federal law. No patient identifiers can be revealed by any healthcare provider. She might not be going to jail but she's probably paying a fine and she will never work in the healthcare field again. She's also probably getting sued and good luck with that defense
