Square Enix trying to port full version of FF15 to Switch, maybe via UE4

I was about to say, that would take a whole lot of work and it may still run poorly and not look at good to a platform that isn't established
The platform is quickly establishing itself is the point really. There's no doubt the switch will sell many multiples of the ps4's ltd in Japan. So starting work on a port now makes the most logical sense since such a hypothetical port wouldn't be out for at least a year anyway.

If they're gonna jump through all those hoops(even the possibility of transplanting the game to an entirely different engine), it would be an absolute show of incompetent management if they don't bring FFVII Remake - which already runs on UE4 - to the Switch... baring any paid exclusivity deals, of course. I feel similar about Kingdom Hearts, which had a nice base on 3DS.

I assume they are already in work... But honestly SE should focus on bringing games like FFX/X-2 and XII to the Switch first.

On one hand it feels like a no brainers after their statements about porting many titles to Switch...but considering how long it takes them to release games like FF9 even on PS4... Welp.

We don't need more FFX.

FFXII, on the other hand... where's my portable version, SE? I would trade FFXV for that in a heartbeat. :(

Probably late on this but why don't you make money in the meantime by porting FF7, 8, 9, 10, and 12. I'm sure all those ports combined will be easier than ff15...

Yeah, it sounds like Nintendo might be interested in helping to market it too. I'm curious how much Bethesda is in talks with Nintendo about this type of thing as well... if Nintendo is actively reaching out to secure big AAA support, then this is hopefully just the tip of the iceberg.

They do seem to have a bit of an interest in attracting the JRPG crowd at the moment, given stuff like Octopath. That could have easily been released for every platform, and yet it was secured for the Switch.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

I only bought FFX on Vita and am missing a big screen version... I would get the Switch version Day 1, since i don't have much use for the Vita nowadays.

Well and I still have to finish X-2 lol. It would be easier if SE would come out and just say that these games aren't coming to Switch then I could get them on Steam.

But as long as the possibility is there I'm gonna wait for the Switch release.

PS. FXII is still a priority. This might be my most wanted potential SE release for the Switch. Need a announcement next year after I'm done with XB2.

Octopath being Switch exclusive is pretty natural considering Bravely Default would have stayed in Japan as just a modest success if it wasn't for Nintendo. Asano probably has a great relationship with them now.

i guess? it ran extremely poorly on PS4 even but it's a big title so i suppose it's worth taking a look at

The thing people always forget when saying this is that Switch uses Nvidia hardware not AMD and on top of that it uses the new Nintendo customised variant of the Vulkan API which is famous for pulling out much better results from lower powered hardware.

So that's DOOM, WFII and now maybe the full fat version of FFXV. I hope all the people shouting about how current gen games were not possible in any form on Switch are ready to eat crow :)

When was Switch a Vita? Except in memes.

I refuse to believe this is memes. This gif is a way of life.

On the one hand, porting a game of this magnitude to an entirely different engine would be a massive undertaking (larger than the complete development of many smaller games I'd say).

On the other hand, on the basis of UE4 they can probably port it to dozens of future platforms over the next decade without too much additional effort :p

But why start with the Switch though? Why not port the game to UE4 when deciding to bring the game to PC? Seems like a strange starting point to me.

It ran like shit on vanilla consoles smh SE doesn't have the wizardry it would take to put it on the switch. They don't have a single game in their catalog known for being an overachievement on a technical level.

I don't get this narrative where people say 'it ran like shit' --this is not true at all. Maybe in certain places there are some trouble spots, but overall, the game runs well on OG PS4.

Square Enix: We will stop using our custom-made engine that took 6 years to build just to support the Switch

Capcom: We need more tests...

It really is glaring how messed-up Capcom is when stuff like this is happening. If you told me in March that the Switch would have a chance at a FFXV port, but no Mega Man Legacy Collection 2, I would've laughed you out of the room.

Because lumionous studio already runs on PC. Infact the PC is probably the only platform where luminous studio can actually run as it was originally designed to.

Regardless what happens with FFXV, it bodes well for KH3 and FF7RE for Switch being more a reality than a dream with how much praise he gave the UE4 on Switch.

Is it just me or is this kind of honesty refreshing? They day whee the problem lies and that they are researching for solutions.

Would be great if they could port it to another engine and then for switch. The game could even be better optimized! Especially if Nintendo helped

Might this also make sense if they are willing to port FFXV on future platforms? I guess having the game running on UE4 can be useful nonetheless.
If they were intending to use Luminous going forward, I think it would be easier to just port FF15 to newer versions of that.

If they're not intending to use Luminous going forward, then this is useful for future proofing, yes.

How cool would it be if they recoded the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD games in Unreal Engine 4? I'd be extremely curious to see how much better it would look. Same assets, but new engine. The improvements to the lighting alone would probably make it worth it.

They technically already moved them to a new engine. It and FFXiI are now in PhyreEngine.

Porting it to UE4 seems crazy. Has a AAA ever switched engines after release before? I do like the idea of a complete portable version existing in the future though

Rebuilding the entire game in Unreal 4? No way, that is going to be such an immense amount of work. No port is worth that.

Asking Epic to use their expertise from developing Unreal 4 to help with the extreme optimizations the game would need to run decently on the switch? That sounds a lot more likely, to me.

I hope
  1. it works
  2. it encourages them to continue porting FF to Switch
I would happily re-buy FF14, the Lightning Saga, FF12 The Zodiac Age, FFX+FFX-2 HD, ect on Switch.

Actually, Switch is pretty much where I want to play all RPG's. When I got a Vita I realized that handhelds were how I prefer to consume RPG's and the Switch is basically the best handheld we have right now.

Would Epic want to do that, though? That would mean gettting a rival to their own engine up and running for general use.

What you proposed is way less likely. Why would Epic ever want to waste resources doing this?
