Jackie invented parkour

What's Tony Jaa up to these days?
He's starring with vin diesel in xxx-3

What about the more artistic martial arts films like House of Flying Daggers, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and Curse of The Golden Flower. I love those types of movies and they have also been few and far between

Scott Adkins makes like four a year :p
Yep. Guy is incredible. Even when he's starring in weak movies they're still fun to watch because of the fights and when he gets into something good, like Undisputed 2-4 or Ninja 2, it's pure martial arts joy.

Guy was born two decades too late for western cinema. I wish he would star in some cable series, so he could build some star power. Seeing him wasted on side characters, like in Doctor Strange or American Assassin is pure crime.

Hong Kong culture is dead.

No one even talks about Cantonese food as a cuisine anymore. It's all about Shanghai food.

What are you on about, that's absurd. Taiwanese food is getting fashionable at the moment, but Shanghai doesn't even qualify for one of the eight major Chinese cuisines.

Anyone who watched Wong Kar Wai movies would know that the culture has always been about a place and a time. It'll get driven more underground in indie films, much like anything interesting coming out of China are probably films that don't get pass the censors. The question is really whether Chinese cinema will get its own unique identity any time soon. Wolf Warrior 2 seems to borrow jingoism from 80s Hollywood and most of the effects heavy big budget fairs are dreadful, unless it's Stephen Chow.

Some of you are discrediting the team behind the raid films just because they haven't made enough movies. Jackie chan, Jet Li and others in this thread already have a 25+ year head start. Give Iko and his team some time to make a great catalogue of movies before dismissing them. They might just end up carrying the genre on its back this generation.

Where can I watch The Raid? And other Indonesian action movies?

Headshot(it's like a third raid movie) is on Netflix. Unfortunately the Raid 1 and 2 were removed so you'd have to buy them or rent them on Amazon video/redbox at this point. Same goes for Merantau.

Unfortunately it's all about China now, any Hong Kong aspiring actor has to have mainland China appeal as well now.

Action movies have been evolved into something more "intelligent", like The Bourne or MI movies. The 80's-90's action movies are dead, the audience isn't there anymore, they don't want it, they don't need it etc.

Lol.

The biggest action franchise in the world is "The Fast and the Furious" the issue is hollywood forgot how to make great action films.

French film "District 13 Ultimatum" is really great.

Also Agents of Shield from about halfway through season 2 is actually pretty good at this stuff.

Being Asian, I'm glad they're dead/dying. We get enough stereotypes as it is. Let it die so they can try their hands on other genres. Plus, this crap is is all over television here in China. Nothing but cringe-y Wuxia with Power Rangers level of campiness.

Nothing wrong with doing action AND doing other things too.

It's over. I can't name any of the current actors. Everyone I know are from 70's-00's. HK movies are so bad now.

Well this finally got me to start checking out Chan's films like I had been planning to a few months back. Rented Rumble In The Bronx and the first three Police Stories, and Drunken Master 2 is on Netflix

Edit: another great GIF courtesy of SunhiLegend
Make sure to check out Armour of God and Project A. 2 of my personal favorites.

Definitely has went downhill, hopefully it'll bounce back though.

This day and age so many movies just have way too many cuts and tricks and the stars are more averse to taking risks when it comes to long shots and fights it seems.

What are you on about? Hong Kong has always been a different entity when it comes to the arts. Just look at this list for the immense variety Hong Kong cinema has output in half a decade.

The number one voted film is a 1994 drama film Chungking Express and the number two is a crime thriller that was later remade by Martin Scorsese as The Departed.

Just because you see shitty television in China doesn't mean it was always like this.

Has anyone discredited the Raid guys here.

I think the discussion is mainly just on HK.

You bring The Raid guys into this and they are definitely where the bar is set right now in terms of action movies.

We love Iko and crew

Add in Armor of God 1/2 and Project A 1/2 if you have time.
These along with the Police Stories and Wheels on Meals represent Chan at his best imo. Not just epic fights, but the stunts and comedy too.

While he is a great actor, he seems to be one of the most hated ones in HK cinema due to his huge ego.

I personally think that the reason he isnt starring in as many films as he actually could because of that. So many directors said they wouldnt work with him again. One movie he was supposed to act in there were 2 main actors/protagonist, but Donnie Yen didnt like it and said sth. like "Its either only me or I wont star in it!"

Ah, I don't hear much behind the scenes info on HK actors these days so that's disappointing to hear.

My favorite Jackie Chan movie to watch front to back, and not just skip to fightscenes is Miracles / Mr. Canton Lady Rose / The Canton Godfather.

Donnie Yen has been one of the most productive guys in recent years. Of HK actors, I'm not sure if anyone else is more prolific apart from maybe Sean Lau or Louis Ku who aren't action stars.

I haven't seen any young jackie chan movie, this thread has convinced me to change that. I think there are a few on netflix.

I'm doing that now myself. iTunes has most of his best ones to rent, Netflix has Drunken Master 2, Amazon Prime has The Young Master and a few others

Just watched Drunken Master 2 and the first Police Story (oh, that's where Bad Boy 2 got that idea from!)

One thing I'm impressed with is how even though the fight choreography doesn't have the brutality of a movie like The Raid, they feel like they hurt more. Does that make sense? Like Chan and co look like they're beating the crap out of each other and both combatants are getting bloody and bruised. The choreography is more stylish and acrobatic but the moves hit just as hard.

After The Raid 1 and 2, I really hope Indonesia takes over. Some of the absolute best action films in recent memory.

I know he's sort of a different thing, but it's a shame that Stephen Chow's focus seems to have shifted after Kung Fu Hustle. I get that some of it was probably age but it's hard to find good martial arts films with comedy in them.

After seeing stuff like The Raid, John Wick, South Korean thrillers, and video essays on channels like Every Frame about fight choregraphy, cut heavy fights like that are just so damn jarring. I used to not notice or really care, but now it's so noticeable every time a movie or show does that

I love the fist fight between Max and Furiosa in Fury Road, but yeah most of the time Hollywood fight scenes aren't edited very well while relying on too many cuts.

The Raid 2 is anime garbage compared to the first movie. I kind of hated The Raid 2. It's just bad in comparison.

I wanna see the new Bruce Lee biopic.

Wheels on Meals is fantastic. Drunken Master (the first one) is another great Jackie Chan movie. I don't like the second one.

I enjoyed Enter the Dragon as well. My favorite Bruce Lee movie.

Really? That final fight in the first Raid was like an anime fight. I think most people didn't like the slower parts of the story in the sequel.

I think there's just a much greater sense of impact with the Hong Kong choreography. Like, just blunt force trauma. When the script requires killing, it just automatically looks fake as opposed to them just beating each other up.
Also Jackies stunt team really seemed to punish themselves with the falls they take.

The biopic got terrible reviews. It sidelines Bruce for a fictional white guy.

It's probably over, but that's okay on some levels. The impact is still felt to this day. Every fight scene in a movie that doesn't look like some janky old James Bond bullshit has benefited from the influence of these movies. They rewrote the Dictionary when it comes to action movies.

Sometimes it's better to make a lasting impact than limp along until you fizzle out

Any good martial arts movies that came out current plus last year? Last one I enjoyed was Raid 2. Surely there must be more.

Most of these have too many cuts and too much wiring. The hits also don't feel as real.

That's what I thinking too. Of course Jackie Chan and his stunt team paid the price with plenty of broken bones.

It pains me to see all these Jackie gifs when there's no Lei Wulong in Tekken 7.
