Firefly premiered 15 years ago today

Fox handled the release so poorly that you really can't blame people for missing it.

They clearly wanted this show to die and they did everything in their power to make that happen.

Doesn't matter either way. Only people with Nielsen boxes mattered for ratings.

I know the backstory, doesn't make it less terrible in execution

This is true of almost anytime actors are asked to speak a different language they're not familiar with or to utilize an accent they don't have naturally.

There are exceptions but it's going to happen. Nothing particularly egregious about it in Firefly.

I dunno, considering Browncoats are more or less Space Confederates fighting the Lost Cause the idea of the cast having a regressive dipshit in the mix makes a lot of sense.

I never want this show to come back in any form. I loved what was there, I loved the conclusion it miraculously received. It lived its brief, shiny life in exactly the place and time it was meant to.

Obligatory link to Movies With Mikey on Serenity.

I 100% agree with this.

... But if they announced season 2, I would still pee myself with joy.

Okay, what I really want is season 3 of Dark Angel.

Serenity was a perfect finale.

As proven by lots of okay at best comic books. Shake my head at them trying to tell Book's backstory without Ron Glass acting. That's like asking for a fine Scotch and being given crayon juice.

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
I killed Firefly.
The quality of Buffy was in the toilet and I blamed the focus on Firefly so I refused to watch Firefly at all. I was a Nielsen household at the time. I would have tuned in for every rebroadcast if not for the Buffy thing.

Firefly gave birth one of my biggest celebrity crushes. 15 years later, she is still on my list.

Granted it kind of shit the bed in its second season but to this day I find it annoying and funny how Fox cancelled Dark Angel for Firefly (in part due to certain executive politics) only to completely fuck it up.

Love this show, and the movie too.

Cowboys, in space, with Joss Whedon dialog and intriguing lore-- It's one of those pieces of media that feels like it was made specifically for me. And I'm sure a lot of other people feel that way too.

Perfect cast. It's a special show.

I'm one of the few who actually watched it when it originally aired, since that was when I was still a huge Whedon fan. It was okay but doesn't deserve even .0001% of the reverence it still gets.

It would be the worst Whedon show if it wasn't for the abomination that was Dollhouse.

Of course the timeline where Trump is prez is also the one with Firefly being prematurely canceled. The network did this show dirty and it's just not fair that it didn't get the air time it needed. I still feel robbed about it to this day.

Also one of the only ones to watch his it air, and I disagree with everything you've said lol.

Firefly as amazing even out of order, and no one got Dollhouse I guess,?

Edit. Forgive typos fever

So you watched it out of order?

Because Train Job is good, but it's not an effective first episode.

How has this show never gotten picked by netflix for say even a spiritual revival ? Are the rights caught up in legal hell ?

serenity was good

i like science fiction more than adventure

wonder if firefly would have gone in a more sci-fi direction for subsequent seasons after the introductions to the characters & universe was done

Wifey and I will be watching through in the coming days once more.

Gorramit I hate that it didn't get more time. So much I love about it.

The language, the music, the vast, the world. All so wonderful.

She was such a refreshing character when we first meet her.

Man, both Jewel Staite and Christina Hendricks were amazing to see.

I got introduced to the show by my aunt who was a massive fan of the series, she gave me a boxset completely free and gradually I was won over by this series. I loved the movie Serenity as well and thought that was a good conclusion.

But here's the thing, how come people didn't turn out for Serenity despite the large fandom at the time? That always puzzled me, they wanted a continuation and it was right there!

"That sounds like something out of science fiction."

"...honey, we live on a spaceship."

They did.

But Firefly is a cult thing at best. It wasn't going to ever make a lot of money. And that's fine. Watching the film you can tell Whedon knew it was one and done. I'm sure he could have done more if it'd taken off, but dude was not planning a trilogy with those plot points and character beats.

I watched Firefly for the first time on DVD a few years ago, all episodes in the correct order etc. ... and it wasn't that great, it was an okay show but when it ended I didn't feel like I had been cheated out of several years of phenomenal entertainment.

Firefly is well below Buffy and Angel for me, but Objects in Space is the finest piece of television Whedon has made. Its existential themes are pretty heavily signposted, but the ideas are treated with a deftness as every element in the narrative plays into them. Jubal Early is a wonderful cipher to play against River to illuminate two existential positions.

I loved Outlaw Star!

It always bothered me that a tv show (Firefly) and an anime (Cowboy Bebop) that people consider the best both
'borrowed' a ton from Outlaw Star yet Outlaw Star remains underrated.

Anyone who is a Firefly fan should check out Outlaw Star asap.

Good for you

Did anyone else read all the Dark Horse graphic novels? They're... alright. I have all of them but the most recent; I'm waiting for it to drop in price a few bucks.

My favorite episode used to be Out of Gas, but over time I've come to really, really love the episode Ariel. Hints at a much bigger universe out there, finally gives some answers about River, and then you have Jayne begging for his life.
