This is and has always been a shitty marketing ploy more than a regular award. I'm voting every year only because I want the free stuff.

There are unreleased games, the voting takes place at a stupid time, the eligible games are usually lacking some great but less popular ones, it focuses a lot on things related to games more than to games themselves, such has esports, best developer, actors or on minor things such as most shocking plot twist, etc.

I really doubt Nintendo bought a spot for Mario when they already have Zelda. I think it only have to do with the fact that every 3D Mario has been a Goty contender so far and Odyssey was the best of E3. The same is true about Wolfestein, so your theory would only make sense for AC but even then I doubt Ubisoft care enough.

Voted just to get the free 100 Greatest Videogames Edge issue. I generally preferred BOTW because it's the best 2017 game on their list (disappointed about the Divinity: Original Sin 2 omission) while supporting as many independent developers, who are the only ones who could benefit from some nonsense award called the Golden Joystick, as possible.

I haven't played enough games this year to feel entirely comfortable with my votes. There's been too many games.
If I had played them all, I wouldn't feel entirely comfortable because of that. There's been too many good games.
Of the ones I have played and that are among the nominees, I feel that Stories Untold is the main standout for me. It's cool.

Weird that Wolfenstein II is in there. If games aren't released yet, how the heck do you choose them as nominees? Why would you pick this game over for instance AC Origins?
Or what if Wolfenstein II ends up being a worthy candidate for a category it is now not nominated for?
Why are they doing this now rather than after the games of the year are actually out? The actual awards show or whatever doesn't need to take place this year. Seems like getting the awards process right should be a priority over that?

It seems they forgot about the existence of Original Sin II? After 11 reviews it's the 3rd highest rated game on Metacritic of 2017.
