So, what's the best single player mode fighting game?

SC2 console sp sucks compared to SC1. SC2 arcade mode SP was excellent next to VF5 probably one of my favorite fighting games to randomly grind.

The newer MKs also get a mention as my modern choice.

Thread's unfair when the answer is in the OP. Weapon Master mode was great.

God, Soul Calibur V's lack of modes was a darned travesty.

Gonna go with SoulCalibur III with the Chronicles of the Sword and Tales of Souls one-two punch. Not to mention all the smaller bonus modes.

That series deserved better.

It's this. ToS has great replayability with the different routes you can take (though some routes, like getting to Night Terror require not losing ever which is annoying). CaS is a lot of fun too. It was so damn cool to get something to use your created characters for and I thought the RTS elements were fun too. I also recall some extra replayability because some later party members depended on who you KO'd in earlier battles.

The most recent mortal kombat games (9 and X) had campaigns that were the most satisfying for me. Never knew I wanted a story mode in a fighting game until I played those.

I remember liking Soul Blade's/Edges Edge Master mode more than the one in Soul Calibur 2, I can't remember why though, it's been so long since I played it.

What I really want is a game that has an RPG story mode ala Puzzle Quest where each combat encounter is a 3 round fight. Levelling up, sidequests, etc.

That being said SFV has the best single player mode for me. Fight money has me playing survival for the first time, grinding challenges, etc. It adds a carrot to the stick that has never really had one for me before.

Sounds like someone who has never played a Netherrealm game lmao.

I’ve played all four of them. MK9’s story mode was a surprise in that I was surprised they spent all that money on cutscenes. It wasn’t something I wanted to experience twice though.

for me it's not even close.
Mortal Kombat Deception's Konquest mode
between battles it was like an RPG where you run around the realms of Mortal Kombat, and got deep real deep into the MK lore. and there's a ton of unlockables

I don't know man, I think Killer Instinct is a great game but that Shadow Lords mode got really really repetitive after a while.

That's fine, but I don't see a single other example being listed here that can't be accused of the same.

Like I love the Blazblue series, but the single player modes in that essentially boil down to a good arcade mode and then visual novel sequences where you literally are just reading text for hours. Most of the other examples people are giving are lengthy cutscenes (ZZZ) or shallow minigames (ZZZ). At least Killer Instinct asks the player to constantly be making important decisions regarding character growth and mission strategy outside of the fights, and the human-derived AI goes a long way towards countering the normal predictable repetition you find in fighting game AI. (Including the VF series, though they did do a great job considering the era.)

Soul Calibur II

Weapon master mode is such a treat. Played the shit outta of it.

Super Smash Bros. 64/Melee/Brawl/3DS

Classic mode is still great and the minigames that break the pace are possibly even better.

Adventure mode is cool at first, but kinda drags. Getting through everything once was enough in Brawl.

All Star Mode is the true gem. Of course there's also event matches.

Soul Calibur 1 and 2 and Injustice 1 and 2 are miles above every other game in the genre for their single player modes. Subspace Emissary in Brawl was pretty great too.

This is the perfect answer. I was so disappointed in the thread when I didn't see this mentioned earlier.

MK: Deception is one of the most content filled games I've ever played where I enjoyed every single bit of it. Plus, it has Shredder Sub Zero and actual smoke Smoke.

The secrets in the Konquest mode based on being at the right place at the right time still amaze me to this day.

I was going to say SoulCalibur II's WMM! It truly was something special. Other than that, in terms of being a pure time sink, I like the Tekken series too. The Tag games, 6, and 7, in particular. Mortal Kombat 9 and X offer a ton of value too.

I'm a huge sucker for atmosphere and charm so I have to go with the following for some of my personal favorites:

-The Last Blade
-Samurai Shodown 3
-Street Fighter: 3rd Strike

DBZ Budokai 2 and Budokai 3 had really fun single player modes.

Super Smash Bros Melee's adventure mode was pretty fun too.

Brawl's Subspace wasn't particularly fun....but it's worthy of mention because it's basically another game within a game.

Melee. You had:

-Adventure mode, which was just long enough to make repeat playthroughs fun
-Classic Mode, which was 100% randomized unlike Brawl
-Events, which were more creative than the ones in Brawl and 4
-Break the Targets, which were unique to each character unlike in Brawl and 4
-Home Run Contest, the true king of single player modes

Really, it would be perfect had they kept Board the Platforms from 64 but alas.

Oh God, don't get me started. SSE was awful. From the way they normalized all of the characters' physics, to the story, to the enemies, it was just an overhyped trainwreck.

Captain Falcon should never move at the same speed as Donkey Kong. End of story.
