iPhone 8 Is World's Fastest Phone (It's Not Even Close)

Secondly, real world performance will always favor Apple, who's flagships run at almost half the resolution of Samsung's.

The S8/S8+ renders at a lower resolution than the iPhone 8+/X by default.
(Besides which, almost all non-gaming tasks are CPU-bound and not resolution dependent.)

High end android phones are over priced considering performance for the last few gens. The snapdragon 820 in particular was an overheating throttle monster in practically every device.

Yes but who keeps it at that res? And these generations would be the first.

Which of the geekbench scores quoted in the OP and in the original article were not CPU scores?

The only tests they show? As you can see clearly looking at the browser? None of the CPU scores even go to 10,000....

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
iPhone is faster. Fact.

Does it really matter? Nah not really.

More of a boon on a device like the iPad Pro where you might be doing some productivity stuff.

Also not like there was a huge cry from GS7 or iPhone 7 users that their phones were slow. Sure the newer phones are faster with better features.

Doesn't mean you should never upgrade. Just means most people don't need to rush for an upgrade every cycle. Wait till you run down your battery or crack your phone or something.

I'm much more interested in what Apple can do with this going forward in devices not named the iPhone like a new iPad Pro or Macbook Air.

IPhone 8 plus vs Galaxy Note 8 speed test: https:/.be/_G4nbQ4cqe8

They both are very close.
The 2 distinct test he made show the advantages of iPhone and the advantages of Note 8.

“Very close.”

There is no 10000-point cap on the CPU score, if that's what you're implying. Aside from the Metal compute test (which was not included in the article in the OP), Geekbench is a CPU-only test on iOS. The Geekbench browser you linked shows the average score for an iPhone 8 is a bit over 9900; the site in the OP managed to score a hair over 10k. That just means their unit happened to score very slightly above average.

Their multi-core was at 10K a few days ago (and 8 was ahead by a margin of error). Now they've corrected it (chart updated 12h ago) to 9.9k. In comparison, their Metal scores are at 15k. All geekbench scores discussed so far have been CPU scores.

This explains the ios but look at the S8 numbers. Looking at single core alone there's no way that is CPU only

its so painfully obvious that someone like apple needs to crack the ‘your phone is your pc’ problem. i so badly want to just go to work and plug in my phone to a docking station. i wonder how far off that really is

Incredible to think where this architecture ended up when my father brought back an Acorn A5000 and its totally unknown CPU back in 1992.

I don't understand your objection. Are you saying "there's no way the S8 single core CPU performance score is only 1966 while the iPhone 8's is around 4200"? Because that is actually correct.

It is CPU-only. Did I mention Apple's CPU is remarkable? ; )

No. In the OP the S8 score is 6300. On the geek bench browser the top single core score is 1900. The double is 6500, renderscript 8800. The S8 score is not CPU only...

There's a little variation between tests on the same kind of device and even the same device (background tasks, heat, all sorts of factors may make minor differences between runs). The score in the OP is Geekbench multicore - if the article in the OP got 6300 and the browser shows 6500, that's pretty comparable (and is still just a CPU test).

Microsoft tried that. It was an abject failure, and not just because of underpowered processors. A relatively powerful desktop PC is inexpensive and serves a very different use case than a phone. Then there are all sorts of problems with the UI switching from touch to mouse + keyboard and biometric authentication, etc. There's no way Apple is going to make an iPhone that transforms into a Mac when you dock it.

Why do you want this, beyond the gimmick?

~6500 vs. ~6300 is within the margin of error for multiple runs or multiple devices.

What is Apple doing with arm chips that long time arm designers are struggling to do? Is it an android thing?

The A11 chip and gpu could pass as a console more powerful than what is in the switch.

Wait? So that one company that said they were ahead in chip technology wasn’t telling me the truth? They betrayed me! I feel used and dirty! Oh god, why? WHY?!

Yeah knew as much when we saw the leaked benchmarks. iPhone is insane.

Tempted to hold off on an iPad upgrade. As much as I’d like a Pro 10.5 soon, that A11X jump will be bonkers.

It's not an Android thing. Apple just has better talent/resources/focus than Qualcomm, just like Intel/nvidia v. AMD in the PC market's recent history.

Yes. But that was the case with the A10/A10X as well.

The X1 gpu was still faster than the A10x’s gpu.

I think people aren't seeing the bigger picture. This opens the gateway to phones becoming true replacements for laptops.

Being able to do productive work with the device in your pocket is the future. Need to work on a spreadsheet? Or edit a video? Or look at a CAD model? Just connect to a wireless display and your set. That sounds amazing.

I guess im thrown off that they didnt submit the benchmark. I thought most of these don't give you the option?
The thing is, it will be still faster than next years high end android phone too. Apple has been destroying Android phones still 2 gens ahead. The 6S still beats the Note 8 in these tests.
This is highly inaccurate unless you are only talking about geekbench.

How does this compare to last year? Because isn’t Apple always much better than the competition when their latest phone hits? Is this like a bigger leap than usual?

Very few people on the planet can design good uarchs, and Apple has (or used to have) those. Keller needs to get back to amd and finish that k12.

CPU-wise it would be more powerful than the twins as well.

I've been using a ubuntu tablet for lightweight productivity for more than a year now -- all it takes is a portable kbd. Same tablet I webbrowse on on my morning commute.

That's the thing with Apple. They're definitely working on this, but publicly they're gonna say "that's a stupid idea" until they have a finished product ready to surprise demo on stage, at which point it will be "magical".

They're the opposite of Microsoft and Google, who will announce it way before it's ready, and ship it with half the features promised.
