Hip hop was better in the 90s.

I see this statement thrown around a lot so lets get them out there.

Enter the Wu-Tang
Illmatic
Entroducing...
Low End Theory
Liquid Swords
Midnight Mauraders
Aquemini
The Infamous
Ready to Die
ATLiens
Black on Both Sides

There's ten of the best from the 90s. And just ten. God there are so many more.

Do you agree hip hop was better in the 90s? Give me your best from the 00s.

I kind of expected more than just a simple list and namedropping. Why not explain in more detail what you liked better about it?

I tend to agree but the 90's and early 2000's also had a fair share of garbage rappers in the mainstream. Look at Cash Money, No Limit, DMX, and Nelly just to name a few.

Oh, sorry, I never said I liked 90s hip hop more. And I acknowledge hip hop has evolved and there are so many great recent hip hop albums.

But I miss the FLOW of 90s hip hop, it was more about rhymes, flow and lyrics than it is about today.

I kind of feel bad people saw this as a thread to shit on post-90s hip hop. I adore Kendrick.

I just wanted people to discuss the differences between 90s hip hop and thereafter.

I agree. Can't mess with these tight jean wearing mofos.

I kid, but I do prefer 90s hip hop. Some rapper here and there today interest me, but most of plays are from Illmatic, G-Funk Era, The Chronic, and Ready To Die.

I wish the people who loved 90s rap so much would talk about more than the same 20 albums all the time.

I would love to be introduced to some album from that time not a lot of people know about or slipped under the radar.

Have you ever listened to Organized Konfusion?

I feel like everyone can (and will) say this about whatever time they grew up in in regards to anything. If you were to ask a senior in highschool or even college students now when hip-hop was better they will tell you 00s. So on and so forth. There is just as much good hip-hop in the 00s if not more but since you were more exposed to what was considered good hip-hop when you were growing up you got rose-tinted glasses(headphones?) on about it.

No... good hip hop just doesn't fall into your lap the way it did in the 90s. But there's plenty of it!

It's fine if you don't like modern hip hop styles but there are more hip hop sounds than ever and it's being made all across the globe these days

I think the landscape has obviously shifted dramatically but I don’t find today’s hip-hop any less ‘entertaining’ than older eras. It’s just...different.

It was definitely more real back then, though. Lots more manufacturered artists these days creating a lot of copy-a-hit songs that aren’t original. There are a lot of artists that are still keeping shit fresh regardless. Just have to reach below the surface (radio pop shit).

GAF hates him but Kendrick
Ab-Soul
Isaiah Rashad
ScHoolboy Q
Denzel Curry
Freddie Gibbs
Childish Gambino
T.I. somehow is still doing his thing
Smoke DZA
Chance The Rapper
Kanye
Joey Bada$$
Vince Staples
Run The Jewels
Danny Brown
Lute

I love late 80s and early 90s rap but nowadays, we gave do many diverse artists, that it doesn't matter.

Looking back and watching MTV Classic, DMX was alright. He had some memorable tracks.

I just miss that rough, grimy type of hip hop from that era.

The rest...terrible.

I LOVE SO MUCH MODERN HIP HOP.

Holy shit, you kids get so defensive. This thread was more about asking for modern-day recommendations to the albums I posted in the first post. God, I'm listening to Atrocity Exhibition right now.

You've never listened to Danny Brown, fuck off.

Kendrick Lamar laughs at you

Kendrick is one dope rapper in a world of basic bars. I blame Jay-Z for the state of lyrics today. Just because he doesn't write lyrics doesn't mean the rest of these 9th round draft pick emcees don't have to write either. "Craft your craft". I can't believe how proud some of these dudes are.

"I dont write".

Well, yeah motherfucka I can tell. I wouldn't claim to write either with these pedestrian ass lyrics and delivery.

Ok looks like the sun is coming out, I'm done yelling at the clouds.

Words have meaning.
Think of a better title next time.

Not just hip hop, but gangsta rap too. Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Warren G, Xzibit, etc. Beats were just a whole lot more memorable and catchy back then.

Of course it was. It's not even close. But watch out, literally everything in OT gets the "old man yells at cloud" treatment.

Kendrick is potentially the goat, but him and Vince Staples are the only things that even make an argument imo.

I stated classics from the 90s and asked for classics from the 00s. If you couldn't interpret that that's on you.
Add "Was" to your title and it will change from an aggressive viewpoint to a more neutral one.

I've had copywriter experience.

"I'm 16 and still listen to the classics, back when rap was good. You say Lil Uzi Vert, I say Biggie. You say Drake, I say Outkast. You say Future, I punch your in the face. Like this if you agree!"

How much drugs do you have to be on to say DMX was a garbage mainstream rapper in the late 90s/early 2000s

A. Some
B. A lot
C. All of them
D. All of the above + even more drugs.

The answer is D

Remember when everyone was raving about DNA and Humble? That lasted long...

DAMN was still top 10 last week, and HUMBLE is still top 25 so...

This to me is the biggest difference.

99% of hiphop I came across in the 90s was either actively great or so bad it was hilarious.

Now? You have to wade through thousands of mediocre but perfectly fine albums to get to the good stuff. I just don't care enough about music to put the work in.

It is/was, and even the most avid defenders of new school know it deep down. That said, there’s a lot of good current stuff.

Yes, thank you, this is what I wanted.

I wanted albums to rival the best of the 90s to put the"90s hip hop was better" to bed.

Thank you. I wanted to bring awareness to modern hip hop.

Saturation II is incredible.

Problem is that this is such a tired topic. Like really really tired.

Now we have mumbling motherfuckers making up words to pad out the rhythm.

OP - Any sensible member here knows 90s was the golden age of rap.

But Earl Sweatshirt's first mixtape came out in 2010...

I didn't read the OP completely, that's on me.
