Does anyone know if you can trade between US and JPN versions? I know for the RBY VC games you couldn't due to the languages not being embedded in the data but I was wondering if GS was the same.

It was possible on original hardware, but would corrupt your save. For the VC releases, the patch dummies out this ability.

Dammit, I forgot Crystal was when they added the town/route change notification, and the animated sprites. Hurry up and put the best Pokemon game on the eShop, Nintendo!

I only know that the English and Korean games can do it for sure (only way to get a legit Mew or Celebi on the original carts).

Too much changed between Japan and the international releases though, so those would cause problems.

Ugh... Spent an hour using headbutt on a tree in Azela town to get Exeggcute for my Nuzlocke. It's a 15% chance but headbutt doesn't work every time so I literally was pressing the A button over and over again for an hour (my hand hurts lol) while I played Fire Emblem Heroes on my phone.

Can't evolve it until much later on but it was the only thing I could catch in Azela town so getting it now means I don't have to worry about running into it later on a route I may want something else (or better for that matter).

Next route after the forest the first thing I run into (with like a 10% chance) is a freaking Abra, I have a fast ball (4x the catching chance) and it fails.

FML.

Made it to Ecruteak and caught me a Magmar. :3 Just gotta beat up Morty, grab surf, then hunt down a Natu for my team to be complete!

I've never used Natu/Xatu because their movepool in both this and Gen 4 is trash (level up wise, at least).

Those elemental punches in Goldenrod are a godsend, these movepools, blegh.

Zubat finally learned bite so he's fun to use now.

10 year old me was the dumbass that had 3 fire attacks and cut on his Typhlosion.

Current team: Chikorita, Zubat, Mareep, and now looking for a Wooper, but it being day time makes it very hard to find one. Oh well

Ooh, that's rough. Are you allowing yourself to get a casino Pokemon? Could make up for it that way.

Yep but I'll have to see whats available. I can't evolve Kadabra so I may opt for getting something else but it just depends, Kadabra would be a useful Pokemon for quite awhile either way. I just got to Goldenrod and found the Department store TM's are headbutt and the 3 elemental punches which is really cool since thats a straight upgrade for Flaaffy (I think it learns Thunder Punch at 30 naturally anyway when it evolves but for like 3k its a cheap upgrade) and I also taught it Fire Punch for type coverage both are great moves for a Pokemon like Flaaffy which has a high special attack stat as both types use S.Attack unlike the Gen 4 Physical Special split on moves which made all the punches Physical attacks.

I don't count Gift Pokemon and I know I can get an Eevee before the 4th gym so I'm debating maxing out its happiness and evolving it into one of the two dark or psychic types since it seems as though the elemental stones don't come until after the elite 4 but I'm not sure I want to grind that out right now XD

Kanto is fucking horrendous in GSC. That's why I always stop after finishing the Johto league, Kanto is just not fun.

Damn, the disrespect is real.

Getting back to the statement, if you don't enjoy it, that's you, but to say there's NO payoff is just incorrect.

Guys, this is unreal.
I've just chosen Chikorita as a starter on Gold and the very first one is shiny. I didn't reset it even once, though I originally planned to reset it to get decent IVs.
As a reminder, the odds of getting a shiny Pokémon in Gen II is 1/8192 (the only exception being breeding, in certain circumstances).

Actually due to a programming quirk in the second generation, the fast ball only has a 4x chance on Grimer, Tangela and Magnemite rather than all Pokémon that can run. :p

EDIT: Although I don't think using teleport counts as running away regardless

Oh man, that's crazy! Congrats! To this day I've never seen a shiny in gen 2 other than the Gyarados.

Caught my Natu! Took a couple of tries, though; little suckers have teleport. -.-

Kanto is more of a victory lap than a true second half. You can blaze through it pretty quickly thanks to all of the gym leaders being more or less the same level.

The difficulty spike from Blue to Red is unbelievable.

I like Kanto in G/S :(

It blew my little kid mind when I saw that we were able to do the whole region.

No other Pokémon game has come close to that awe.

I still teach my Venusaur in Yellow the move Cut, but strangely it just feels right with him knowing that move.

In Sliver I stop after defeating Blue, Crystal I go all the way and take on Red, Heart Gold I again stop after defeating Blue with me fighting Suicune and in Soul Silver I do Kanto but I end it with me rechallenging the Elite 4.

Damn, the disrespect is real.

What payoff is there? The trainers and gym leaders are all more or capped at the same level, with exception of Blue who is at a higher level due to be fought last and Janine who for some reason has her team between level 36-39 when the Eltie 4 team were at level 40-50. There is no reason for her to be at a lower level.

Plus Kanto doesn't have much of a plot going for it as Team Rocket has been disbanded and most of the location has been closed off.

As for Red well his team at such a high level and with the terrible level curve it takes such a long time to grind to match his level, plus the HM Flash is required to even reach him so the player has to cripple their team to fight him, with it being much worse in the remake.

Plus Kanto really overshadow Johto but at the same time is so barren.

^ Uhhh ... you don't need to match Red's level to beat him. Most people beat him with their teams in the high 50s or low 60s.

I enjoy it as a victory lap or built-in expansion pack.

There are flaws worth noting, but the other guy was just being hyperbolic calling it horrendous.

HG/SS fixed a lot of those issues, but for some reason I'd rather play this version.

B2W2 managed to top this with it's second half, but then again 20 year old me couldn't appreciate that as much as 10 year old me appreciated GSC.

Yeah, GSC Kanto is fine for what it is, I just understand why some people don't dig it that much.

Do people actually grind up to the 70s just for Red? That sounds terrible. I've always thought the fun in that fight is doing it super underleveled. Red's team is kinda shit so it's totally feasible to beat him with a team in the low 50s. If you're actually on par it must be a pretty easy fight.

Calling Kanto "horrendous" is ridiculous. A ton of people enjoy it. It has flaws, but for me it's about the vibe, atmosphere and joy of having a whole other region to play through. Is it better in HG/SS? Yes. But it's still good fun to go through in this game.

And the soundtrack spreads it's beautiful wings with those remixes. Brilliant stuff.

In Crystal I just grind up to level 60 to fight him but that's only because I had one Pokémon that evolved at level 55 and one that was unevolved but even then it took forever to train and the match was still pretty tough.

No-one is saying that Kanto is horrendous, just that some feel that the inclusion of Kanto affected Johto and the level curve so instead of getting a meaty full region they got an overshadowed region attached to a region that is pretty barren.

The remakes fixes this by expanding Johto plot and adds in the missing areas of Kanto plus moving the finale of the Suicune plot to Kanto.

I do like travelling through Kanto but at the same time I am fully aware of its flaws and am glad that Game Freak learnt from this and decided to focus on creating a full single region than half and half.

Personally I feel that it would have been better had the the journey started in Johto and then once we got the Goldenrod we were travelling back and forth between Kanto to Johto rather than saving Kanto to the post game.

Holy moly, congrats!
Make sure to give it a good nature when you bring it into the new games.

My plan is to get a bunch of x items and to park Ampharos in front of Pikachu for a bunch turns while boosting everything up.
Though you need to have something on your team that doesn't get destroyed by Pikachu to do this.

---

I just completed the Johto league in a little under 8 hours.
My team is:

Feraligatr lvl 43
Ampharos lvl 43
Alakazam lvl 42
Lugia lvl 42
Farfetch'd (Cut and Fly on the same pokemon yo)
Gyarados(HM Slave)

I had played through this game many, many times as a child. But I think this is the first time I played it without just soloing it with my starter.
My most prominent finding for this playthrourgh was that the elemental punches are absolute insane to have easily available early in the game.

Under 8 hours? What in the world

If you do everything past Ecruteak city in an order that avoids backtracking you can progress through the game really quickly. I also skipped most optional areas.
It also helped that my dudes were pretty much obliterating everything in their path.

EDIT:
Speaking of Whitney. My first attempt was going really poorly to the point that I ended up fishing for an Ice Punch freeze. Which I got and which won me the badge.

I never finished this game, but damn Whitney is still the pain in the ass as I remember. Younger me was FURIOUS with her, but my Flaaffy and Geodude was able to take care of Miltank on my first try!

Planning on getting this an hoping for this to be my team:

I wish Ariados was viable/got a mega.

The rest of your team is trash (even in game) or they have Shit movepools (Jumpluff doesn't get a good damaging move for most of the game leveling up). Steelix is probably the best one.

Nuzlocke Update! Third Gym down and just made it to Ecruteak City!

Version: Silver
Badges: 3
Pokemon Dead: 0
Pokemon Owned: 22 (This includes evolutions)

Current Party:
Bayleef (Stassi) Level 19
Geodude (Dudebro) level 20
Pidgeotto (Coco) level 19
Flaaffy (Tsuyana) level 18
Beedrill (Stabi) level 16
Zubat (Sreek) Level 19

Pokemon in the bank:
Sentret (Tren)
Gastley (Wizwick)
Togepi (Eggberta)
Rattata (Triss)
Slowpoke (Estra)
Oddish (Zonni)
Spearow (Luggins)
Ditto (Copycat)
Paras (Vivina)
Sudowoodo (Rocktree)

Pokemon at the Daycare:
Rattata (Triss)
Exeggcute *can't remember what I named it XD*

Current thoughts: Third gym is down and my luck has certainly changed. I've gotten EXTREMELY lucky in a few fights, the stupid Miltank at the third gym would have wrecked my Geodude and possibly more but it missed going into its 4th Rollout which reset it and I was able to take it out without losing anyone then later on against Sudowoodo that I ended up catching it almost killed Bayleef (4hp on a crit from full) so thats good but on the other hand my luck with catching things has certainly gone downhill.

After spending an hour I caught the Exeggcute (15% chance in Azalea town) it just shouldn't have taken that long. Then in the route after the forest I ran into the Abra I mentioned before which teleported, then in the route above Goldenrod City I ran into a Ditto (4% chance) which sucks because Dittos are pretty much worthless in a Nuzlocke (it'll die before it can even Transform in any fight it would be useful) and I would have much preferred ANYTHING else I could have caught there. Then I did the bug catching competition and caught a Paras... Easily the worst possible option I had. Finally after catching the Sudowoodo in the route north of that I ran into a Vulpix (I LOVE VULPIX/NINETAILS!) and I had Zubat out (it had just learned confuse ray) so I confused it right away but it only lasted 1 turn and then it used roar to run away.

I'm still lucky in battle (no ones died yet) but my catching luck today suuuuuucks.

Zubat is almost ready to evolve in both level and happiness (for Crobat) so that'll be helpful, I didn't really happen upon a good option for the 4th gym so I'm mulling over my options. I'm taking the fight seriously though as I've wiped there many times due to that freaking Gengar and Shadow Ball but that was on the remakes so it may not be nearly as difficult here but the only reason the previous gyms were as easy as they were was because of Geodude who is basically useless here (Shadow Ball will one shot it even if I get it to level 25 so it evolves) going to go back and get the Eevee next and I'm thinking about maxing its happiness out and evolving it into one of the two options to deal with this next gym but I have a few other options (Rattata evolved with the dig TM I got in the national park, The slowpoke or Exeggcute I have are a few other choices I just don't know if they'll even be remotely enough) but right now I'm expecting I'll lose at least a few Pokemon in this gym, its the hardest gym by far until the 8th.

I did that once and it was strangely kinda fun and it was very interesting in just how much of the game you could skip.

Just a head up Sneasel isn't obtainable till late post game.

Well, just started the third gym, and guess what. Whitney's Miltank is destroying me. :/

The best advice that I can give in how to defeat Whitney is resort to stats raising and lowering move, plus status moves like poison helps.

If you lower Miltank accuracy and attack it makes rollout less deadly while lowering Miltank defense makes milk drink less frustrating more so if she's poisoned.

Lowering Miltank speed also doesn't hurt as it makes stomp less deadly plus with your Pokémon out speeding hers you eliminated the chance of flinching.

The only issue that might be a problem is attract as the only counter against that is to have the same gendered Pokémon.

In the remake Whitney is much harder as her Miltank is holding a Lum berry, but the same tacit still works.

Ugh there is no patch of grass to catch a Mareep before the Violet City gym. Pretty sure in HG/SS there was so I was banking on that. All that easy EXP I'm going to miss out on now.

So I bought both games on Amazon in hopes of getting the corresponding themes and Celebi codes only to learn that it’s literally impossible to get either unless you buy them directly from the eShop. I then tried contacting Nintendo directly and they proved to be no help whatsoever. Is buying one of the alternate language versions of Gold and Silver off the eShop my only hope at this point?
