PUBG dev Bluehole concerned over Fortnite's Battle Royale [Up: Background Both Sides]

When they used your name, was that in official promotional materials?

Sammie Kang: It was in their promotional video that was posted on Twitter and they would openly mention that they were fans of PUBG, we wanted to make this battle royale game mode, and that kind of gave the impression that we were officially involved in this.

So they were giving the impression that you guys were on board and were a part of this, and in no way were you.

Sammie Kang: Right, and there were players like, "Oh it's cool, now we get to play PUBG in Fortnite", and there was nothing we could do about it, because it was depicted that we were officially involved.

This is some crazy talk. Its not like they said "From the makers of PUBG" in any of their promotional material. They basically said they were inspired to add a BR mode to Fortnite is all.

They should have just left it at "We are flattered that so many developers are taking interest in our game, we understand there are going to be games that try and recreate our mode, and i hope that they try their own take on it instead of making a carbon copy."

They should have just moved on after that and continued counting their money.

If they work together, why can Bluehole reap the benefits, and not Epic? Unless they have a contract addressing that

It's a reasonable concern that Epic will use the work they and Bluehole did together as a base point for further refinements and optimizations that will stay internal to Epic and not get out into the engine at-large until well after Epic's game comes out. If they're going to continue work off of the tech they developed with Bluehole they should share that tech or be looked at for anti-competitive measures. It'd be like Ford working with Mazda on engine enhancements, using the shared tech as a base for better tech and then refusing to license the new tech that was made on top of Mazda's work while selling Mazda old engines that now have a competitive disadvantage.

It's so silly. Is every company not allowed to say they were inspired by or love a game by its actual title?

For you.
Prepare to be more concerned. Wait till Ubisoft gives it a go. Concern may escalate to heart palpations.
I can only imagine the complete shitshow of a launch a Ubisoft BR game would be at launch. I don't think their engines are quite ready for 100 player matches in a huge map with tracked items.

You know, I don't think Ubisoft will be that interested in it. They have their pirate game on the horizon, For Honor died out too soon, Rainbox Six is still going somewhat strong, The Division is still be well supported with a new Horde mode being added in 1.8.

They kind of have a Battle Ground-esque gamemode already in The Division called Survival too.

Yeah, that’s straight bullshit and I don’t see how someone could say it with a straight face.

Talking of which. Rare should add a battleroyale game mode to their upcoming sea of thieves game. A squad based battle Royale with loot items on islands leaving your ship vulnerable to attack when you get them seems like a great idea and a good twist to the ever popular 'last man standing' game mode.

Just read the new interview and honestly that was such a load of bullllfucking shit http://www.pcgamer.com/pubg-exec-cl..._source=twitter&utm_campaign=buffer-pcgamertw

"So the first thing that I'd like to clarify is that this is not about the battle royale game mode itself. "

Okay.

" Epic Games that made this game that is similar to us that has similar elements"

Umm, so it's not about the mode right?

" PUBG might have really simple battle royale rules and systems, but we see that as Brendan's own idea and that game mode in PUBG belongs to Brendan."

I thought this isn't about the game mode huh?

"So we're not just taking someone else's idea. Bluehole's stance is that we respect and value the indie developer or modder's idea and we actually licensed it."

So maybe they're just mad they paid a license for something they did not have to?

"they should have at least came to us before making it and had a discussion with us."

If you don't own the idea, why would they come to you?

"now we're starting to have concerns that they're going to develop new features or improve something in the engine to support that battle royale gameplay, and then use it for their own game mode."

That is petty. Of course they might improve their engine to support their game. Duh. What is the point of developing on your own engine then.

"And we had this business relationship and we had trust that we would be getting continued support, and we were looking forward to working more closely with them to get technical support, maybe develop new features. "

LOL, yeah the best way to have a business relationship is to attack them publicly. What a bunch of idiots.

[on promo materials] "gave the impression that we were officially involved in this."

No, stop this. The material said "At epic we're big fans of the battle royale genre, and games like PUBG and H1Z1. And we thought that fortnite was the perfect world to build one in."

First, they don't even say the game's full name. And they also mentioned h1z1. No one in their right mind says PUBG and/or H1Z1 are officially involved in this. They said they are fans of the genre and the genre includes these 2 games as an example.

"Right, and there were players like, "Oh it's cool, now we get to play PUBG in Fortnite", and there was nothing we could do about it, because it was depicted that we were officially involved."

Here you have it. The ultimate woe is me statements. Set up false pretense and act like a victim.

Of course they claim it's not about the game mode. Everyone knows it's about the game mode. It's not about the mentioning of PUBG. I won't assume what their motives are. But it's pretty clear that they're just not happy with the competition and that they're releasing f2p, people are comparing the 2 games, and it's hitting consoles first.

Last quote:
"There were a lot of copycats in China and [in that] industry there is a lot of battle royale games that look exactly [the] same as ours, so we will definitely look into similarities if there are different products that are very similar to our game"

I think PUBG has the most bland and generic look of a game I've ever seen.

All this said, I think PUBG should just accept that there are competitors and should focus on improving their game and promoting it rather than trying to disrupt the competition. They have a solid game already. I am told it has issues, they should fix them and people won't be tempted to even try another game in the genre.

This is pretty unfortunate. To the addition of some absolutely insufferable fans, this game has also got an incredibly naive developer to boot.

This game should be a feel good story but the Internet and the game's developers have ruined the stuff surrounding the game. The game itself seems to be developing quite well so far.

Competition is only good for the gamers, despite where you may 'side'. This will motivate Bluehole to work harder to make a better product. That's a good thing.

That aside, Fortnite's business model is pretty shady, from where I see it. It's an early access game that has full priced copies on store shelves, have we ever seen this before?

That's suicide. With MS helping bluehole bring the game to xbone are you really ready for the fallout and subsequent press releasing complaining about Microsoft stealing PUBG tech?

I must say that I was pretty surprised at how similar it was when starting etc. But still, it's like complaining about hallways when creating FPS Game 2.0 or whatever. Fortnite had its building system etc in place, which differs quite a lot.

And oh, Pubg is fun, which the Fortnite version fails at.

I think epic trying to glom onto pubg in their marketing was a mistake. When you have a game that directly competes it comes across like an seo scam more than a friendly nod.

Dave Lang called this beef before it happened on his podcast. PUBG is mad they are funding a competitor in Epic because Epic takes big payments from them for the Unreal license. Epic the turns around and uses all the tech and support they gave to PUBG to publish a clone.

Beef seems reasonable to me. No one is gonna change though.

So epic spent money helping PUBG and they're mad that epic is also using it to help themselves?

This doesn't seem like a reasonable beef. It sounds like they don't want competition from epic because it thinks epic shouldn't compete against games using their engine... which is completely absurd. They're also competing against ARK survival of the fittest.

Nobody is worried about Ark SotF, lol

Yeah, but the point remains. They're competing against a lot of games that use their own engine, intentional or not. I don't see why bluehole has legit reason to hate on them for competing against other UE4 games.

edit:
I'm actually watching pubg streams more recently and that is because of FBR. I'll probably eventually buy the game. Them crying about FBR gives me some hesitation but it still has first person view whereas FBR does not.

Don't see anything wrong, games from different companies copy eachother and build upon eachother since forever. Nothing wrong with comparing games either, including name dropping when doing so.

PUBG are just under threat of their monopoly being taken away and understandably are worried, especially if it means they cannot do shitty microtransaction practices now because threat of losing players to alternative products.

Uh no it isn't? Epic makes games. If you're going to work with Epic, you better be ready for them to use what they learned to make games that will compete with you.

Or they could have signed a contract which says Epic won't make games with X features. I'm positive MS did this with Gears of War. For the right price, PUBG could have done it too. If they couldn't afford it, too bad. The genre isn't theirs.

That game started out great but the developers pissed off the playerbase and now it's pretty dead.

http://steamcharts.com/app/437220

It was an example of another UE4 battle royale game. Both Ark SotF and The Culling are done deals: nobody is working on them anymore and they are dead ends.

They have PC on the lockdown at this point, the competition there is irrelevant.

However, Epic has beaten them to XBO and PS4. PUBG partnered with MS for the timed exclusivity so they have handed the golden key to Epic as far as PS4 userbase goes. It doesn't matter whether PUBG is better or worse if it is 6 months away for PS4, people will go to Fortnite.

There is nothing shady about founders' packs, that's literally what they are. The tiers that are full price also give you extra copies to give to friends.

What is Battle Royale? It is a Big Death Match mode where so many players beat each others and the winner is the one still left alive that gets the best score. Such mode existed for almost all games snce online gaming started. If they are angry that Fortnite made a 100 player based battle royale claiming they copied them in that area, they should be very concerned about what they say, because M.A.G on PS3 already allows 256 players and that was many years before them.

Nobody forced them to use Unreal Engine.

Why would a clone dethrone an already wildly popular game? They should be more worried about the people that come along and make a better version of their game.

Fortnite was my first time with a battle royale game and i had fun. All they need to do is add an option for faster travel. I think the only thing that'll potentially keep me from PUBG is being able to build your own fortress during matches.

Honestly if they were do this as the new version of the Dark Zone in Division that would be amazing.
I think it would be cool too is Ubisoft took their Assassin's Creed multiplayer mode (where there's NPCs all over and you have to figure out who's a real player) and expanded that into a PUBG sized thing where you have a huge chunk of a city to work in.

But they have it already in the PVP version of Survival. Everyone starts off with no kit and you survive as long as you can. Killing any and all to take their stuff so you can survive the harsh cold longer. Sometimes you might form a fragile alliance to take down the tougher NPCs to get better items... and then betray the person and take their loot too.

Division doesn't get any real attention anymore, but it's a pretty solid game with some good game modes in it.

"We are happy for all your support and being able to use your engine but don't you dare give us competition!"

So Epic could and would use any feature and improvement Bluehole add to the engine for Fortnite BR even though Bluehole are paying royalties too. Pretty sure that's in the UE4 licensing terms but that's a shitty situation for Bluehole to be in. They didn't see it coming.

You trust an engine developer with your game ideas and in the midst of your success that same engine developer creates a carbon copy before you can even reach all the platforms you're slated to.

It's not illegal but it is a pretty shitty business practice. Not sure I would be able to have a serious business relationship going forward.

Bluehole, lightning won't strike twice. Ask Mojang. Just accept your 15 minutes of fame and move on. Don't whine.
