Do you expect Pokémon remakes on Switch or just Virtual Console?

So we know that the Pokémon franchise will eventually move to the Nintendo Switch. With that in mind, one of the things that the Pokémon series has become known for outside of two game versions at launch and a third version later is the upgraded remake of old generations, a trend that started with the first generation remakes FireRed and LeafGreen on GBA and most recently with the Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire remakes on 3DS. Also recently, the Pokémon games have been getting "warts and all" minimally enhanced ports to the 3DS Virtual Console. The only real change is allowing wireless trading and access to the Pokémon bank.

So the question is: when it comes to old Pokémon generations on Switch, should they do remakes or Virtual Console releases first? I would expect them to do both and hope for double dipping (quadruple dipping?), but there's no chance that they release Sparkling Diamond and Shiny Pearl at the same time as VC Diamond and Pearl, as that would cut into its own audience. Also, when it comes to VC would you expect the latest remake, the original or both?

Alternatively, do you think that the Pokémon Bank could cause them to forgo remakes entirely?

They will also continue with remakes, and in fact may end up remaking several titles once again in the future just to have them all in HD. They will probably save VC releases for way after or before the same remakes come out. Remake first, so its their first re-experience of the game since the originals, ports on VC after, and yeah remakes like ORAS will probably hit the VC after the originals.

When they do the GenIV remaster, I'm hoping for a Platinum remake instead of the inferior Diamond and Pearl version. Hopefully with the Switch they stop with the 2 version BS.

Oh Diamond and Pearl remakes are gonna definitely be coming.
Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are the highest selling remakes and they had a much smaller user base.

I don't see any reason to expect it to change, honestly.

I expect both. I believe we will see Pokemon R/B/Y and G/S/C sometime in the next year and the remakes of Gen IV in 2-3 years.

We're not getting a Platinum remake. We'll get Adamant Diamond and Lustrous Pearl which will loosely integrate Platinum's plotline and also remove the battle frontier.
I wouldn't have expected anything different.

We are effectively getting Platinum for all intents and purposes, though.

There's no way they will suddenly decide to make half as much money. The fact that they've been selling both games in collectors edition shows that they have no interest in stopping.

Probably both. A new game followed by a remake of an old game seems to be a winning formula for The Pokémon Company & Game Freak, & I doubt that they'll change their plans now just because they now have the original games on Virtual Console.

I fully expect the Switch to get Gen 8 in addition to Crazy Diamond & Shining Pearl (Gen 4 remakes, though I doubt those will be the actual names).

i don't want anymore remakes. imo the pokemon games went downhill after ruby/sapphire.

unless they want to do a 20th anniversary remake for Gold/Silver. to this day i still believe Gold/Heart Gold + Silver/Soul Silver are the best Pokemon games. if not then all i ask is to be able to play gold/silver original on Virtual Console.

Honestly I'd more expect them to go the route of OR/AS and basically excise all of the third version in order to do its own thing.

The only reason I could really see Platinum sticking around at all is that D/P are a hot mess without it, R/S at least had the basics down.

New game
Gen 3 VC port with Pokebank support
Gen 4 remake
Another Gen 1 remake

Whatever they'll do, I'll buy it

Pokemon Platinum is seriously in my top 5 games of all time. Its right up there with Persona 3 FES and Fable 2: The Lost Chapters.

Pokemon Platinum HD on Switch would make me cry.

as long as they make Gen 1 + 2 remakes i'll buy them. those are the only good pokemon games after all.
So you're one of those Pokémon fans. Also, you already posted something similar.

At least give Black 2 or White 2 a shot.

I’m expecting Diamond and Pearl remakes, with Gens 1 to 3 available via Virtual Console. You’ll be able to transfer to Gen 8 through Pokémon Bank.

Makes sense. Then the BW remakes on Switch as well will make it so every gen is playable.

You're wrong, but okay.

It will not surprise me if they rebook the remakes and release flame red tree green

What would be really amazing is if they went and reworked the story for each game to be more divergent. Like aside for locking the character models to the version (aka you play as this guy in red:

And this guy in blue:

)
They did story beats differently. Actually, I'd be down with them taking Pokémon Adventures/Special and making that the story of the remakes. That's something I would buy in a heartbeat.

FireRed/LeafGreen are technically older than Diamond/Pearl.

There will be another set of Gen I remakes before Gen 4. In fact, I fully expect it to be the first Pokemon games on Switch, before Gen 8.

Why would the first mainline Pokémon game of the Switch be remakes? That said, I do think another set of Gen 1 remakes is a possibility. But I highly doubt that we'll get them ahead of Gen 8 or the Gen 4 remakes given how TPC has been promoting the Gen 4 Pokémon as of late (especially in the upcoming movie).

Not happening.

And technically, we just had a set of gen 1 remakes. Wireless trading and battles weren't in the original. Nor was Pokémon bank.

AFAIK, there is no Virtual Console on the Switch, and no announcement of a Virtual Console on Switch?
Not yet, anyway. With NES & SNES games being used as the freebies for Switch Online subscribers, we'll probably get Virtual Console at some point in the near future.

They haven't given us a chance to forget about the Gen 1 Pokemon this time around, like they did in Gen 3 which brought about the remakes in the first place. Both X/Y and Sun/Moon bank heavily on that nostalgia and the classic set is fully available.

Fully expect D/P/P remakes on Switch but only after the Gen 8 games (so in, like 2020). Don't see any reason for them to remake Red and Blue again as they pander to that Gen in particular heavily anyway.

The announced that the online service will allow for the download of classic games. It would be absurd for Nintendo to now have some type of virtual console type service.

So I imagine we'll get the DP remake after Gen VIII hits on the Switch, so 2019/2020? I have no idea how it'll look on Switch but I imagine they'll base the DP remake on whatever it ends up being. Guessing fully 3D (with some locked cameras like Sun/Moon maybe?), could voice acting be a thing? Who knows. I reckon we'll still get them though, even if the need for them has dropped slightly since moving to DS onwards.

What I wouldn't mind seeing though, is another Red/Green remake, but not necessarily in 3D. Take FRLG but make it 1080p with updated sprites with more detailed maps, maybe even lose the grid. Have battles be similar to BW where they're fully animated but still 2D. I've always loved FRLG's bright and sharp aesthetics and would love to see that kind of game again. I reckon it'd complement the full 3D series quite well as an eShop only title. EDIT: As some others have said in this thread, maybe even alter the storyline, add new things, have it be a re-imagining of sorts.

That's exactly why I don't expect another set of Gen 1 remakes in the near future. With Gen 6, 7, & the R/B/Y Virtual Console releases, The Pokémon Company has done more than enough Gen 1 pandering for the time being. If anything, the next few years could very well be...
  • 2018: Nothing (break year)
  • 2019: Pokémon Gen 8
  • 2020: Pokémon Crazy Diamond & Shining Pearl (purely speculative names)
After that, I could see TPC & Game Freak either making another round of Gen 8 games or taking 2021 off & jumping to Gen 9 in 2022.

The remakes will definitely continue. The only question is if the next remakes will be Gen I or IV. FireRed and LeafGreen are currently the oldest games not to have been remade, but they themselves are remakes, and the original Gen I games were released on Virtual Console not too long ago. The VC releases even have compatibility with the latest Pokémon games via Pokémon Bank, so I've found it increasingly more likely that they'll continue remakes with Gen IV next due to it having been so long since any Gen IV main series release, and players having to go through so many hoops to get their Gen IV Pokémon to the new games.

Theres something to be said about the first "home" console mainline game being a revisit of Kanto, especially when you consider the wave of nostalgia Pokemon Go has introduced. Switch seems to be a pop culture phenomenon similar to the Wii, a good way to sell software to those people that may have only played the first two gens is to update them.
