Rick and Morty S3 |OT| Keeping Summer Safe - Sundays on Adult Swim

This was what bothered me most about the episode. It doesn't feel like that was earned at all.

I expected a "you are evil, so I did this crazy thing to keep you in line (e.g. emotions controlling chip or erased memories)" during Ricks speech, but no. Also Beth able to build all this crazy stuff as a child and then she just became a horse surgeon without any kind of memory about her inhuman intelligence? That's nonsense.

Still could be regular Beth trying to be overly nice because she felt guilty about the stuff earlier and behaving more stiff and "empty" because she's actually still mentally upheaved inside.

Yeah but in the context of the story, her leaving is the only thing that makes sense

The fact that the writers felt the need to clarify that there was no time travel shows that these people know their fan base all too well.

The Time Travel discussion always cracks me up.

Beth didn't build anything

See, the fake Beth stuff is what I love about this show.

Take a sci fi premisse: that you can make a indistinguishable clone with all your memories that can replace you.

Now ask ethical questions based on this sci fi premisse: Is it okay to abandon your responsabilities when you can be reasonably sure that an exact copy of you will make the same decisions you would? Is it okay to not do "your" job in this sci fi context that a thing that for all intents and purpose is you is still doing the job in question?

And then you couple that with a couple of more metaphysical questions: Does it make a difference? Does it matter?
It might matter a little to Rick because he knows he is dealing with a clone, but it is also irrelevant given he has interdimensional issues with that same subject.
It matters to real Beth because she knows that she is not a clone and that, when given the choice, she decided either to stay or go.
It doesn't matter to fake Beth or the children because they don't know and have no way of knowing they are not dealing with the real thing. It is a clever play on the Leibnizian topic Identity of indiscernibles

Yet, almost none of it is spelled out.
It is a simple scene where Rick presents the parameters of the problem and then leave th rest to the public.
Perfect, concise, 5 seconds, I can laugh at it, I can create a conspiracy theory on youtube, I can try to convince people it has something to do with Leibniz, I can take it, leave it, whatever.
Perfect. Beatiful TV right there.

Compare it with Rick literally speaking about how she doesn't care (which is not true given the story of her character) because she is smart (which isn't false, but Beth is, you know, real world smart, not supergenious smart).

Very powerful episode, perhaps the one that hit me the most (even more than the one where Rick and Morty replace their counterparts) - I knew they wouldn't show us Beth's decision but that still did not rob the final scene from its gut punch.

I also agree that the writers should not revisit this (although, it could serve as an out should Beth be killed)

Maybe not.

But the show absolutely makes it clear that we should want to be like Rick.

What!?

Rick is an immoral emotional mess. We are told this multiple times, in multiple ways by those who know him best. He is portrayed as a deeply unhappy, neurotic, jealous monster. He, and others around him, have maintained consistently his wacky adventures and shenanigans are attempts to escape the very misery of his existence, an existence he confirms tonight he thinks will end as the universe bucks him off its back.

We have seen him break down in a panic attack. We have seen him attempt suicide for goodness sake.

Not to mention that even in that one scene Rick is shown to be full of shit. "Nothing matters, but you matter." He has shown constantly that while he says "nothing matters" he doesn't actually believe it. He wants to believe it so he doesn't get hurt when people leave him. Same way he wants to believe evil is an "artificial construct", in a world where he has met the LITERAL devil.

He also clearly cares for the family especially Morty

And if nothing matters why does he hang out with his family with how much he complains and tried to get Beth to move and chastise Jerry because he thought he was bad for her

Rick is full of shit

Jerry is the worst.

By which I mean the best.

I feel like this show wants to bring up character flaws but not address them. Maybe the creators feel that these characters becoming better people would ruin the comedy.

Man the writing on this show is something else, its batshit crazy one sec and then Rick goes on a deep monologue the next.

I say Beth left also Doodoo in my butt is the greatest thing I've ever.

"Biologically speaking the butt is a nut!"

Vance Maximus was right when he said Rick kinda needed that to be the case.

Regarding specifically Jerry, I thought the after credits thing about Rick still protecting him was pretty funny.

But I'm a bit tired of the sad, pathetic, punching bag writing for the character. Almost reminds me of Meg on Family Guy or Jerry on Parks and Rec. I thought after the Rick and Jerry adventure and seeing how his place seemed to improve this episode that he would have a little bit more redeeming qualities but he seems to have regressed. I guess at least on Parks and Rec, Jerry is better off in lots of ways. Right now, Jerry seems to have started becoming less entertaining than he used to be.

Not really feeling the episode. Also, this is really dark of me, but during the answering machine gag I really wanted it to pan out to Jerry hanging from a ceiling fan or something. I don't know why but I reallly want Jerry to kill himself. There's just something about him that makes me want it...

We might never know

I would love the writers if this was never resolved. Playing with uncertainties seem to be their bag.

Oh please. Like Beth is stable enough she'd ever just say "I love you" to Rick without making it a plead for him not to leave.

People on Reddit are saying that 'those' fans are gonna take Ricks speech to be talking about themselves, and make it like a code to live by. Dear god if so...

Literally the only human being Rick was referencing there was himself. He (and his spawn?) are the only creatures capable of 'taking the universe for ride' he's not talking about some guy who got an A in science class.

I liked it because it felt true from Ricks point of view on life, and it makes sense with what his character has seen and done.

I just watched all the seasons till S2E6..what did I miss? Which speech..remind me please...

People unhappy that Jerry is still doing poorly because they want him to get a win or something seem to not understand that Jerry is that character. He admits this episode that he's a racist and a sexist. He may be better than Beth overall, but that really isn't saying much. He's a piece of shit, and while he may not put the kids in harms way through sheer negligence the way Beth would, he also has no problem getting them hunted by a killer alien just because he's too much of a pussy to break up with his girlfriend

So what you're saying is that Jerry truly is a phony.

People expected development from thing and less same old same old

Rick and Morty’s Jerry is very different than Parks and Rec’s. This Jerry deserves all of the shit he gets.

Parks and Rec Jerry unlike this Jerry while incompetent and clumsy has a great life (outside worj) and family and is the nicest guy on the cast

This Jerry is kinda of an asshole

Yeah, I get that he is very different. He gets all the shit he gets cause he's continually a shitty person. It was funny at first but the character doesn't have anything entertaining about him to me anymore. I think it'd be better if they just fire Chris Parnell and write Jerry off the show. I don't think the even really need him.

Neither Beth nor Jerry seem to serve much purpose to the show anymore. I'm not sure why it is that Jerry apparently needs to be killed off or written off when Beth is just as aimless.

I don't seem to recall Beth's flaws. Jerry seems to be written to be an absolutely unredeemable character and I feel bad for him because Rick kind of shitted on everything. Though he's gotten to the point where Im annoyed by him since he keeps doing the same thing

As for his alien girlfriend. Well she's scary and wants to kill him for breaking up, so I don't see how that makes Jerry a pussy when he's supposed to be a victim to violence.
