Avatar’ Starts Production Today; $1 Billion Budget

so it has to make 3 billion to make money?

Even a fucking crater drop for these films would be it hitting 1 billy each

$1 billion will buy you a lot of tropes and clichés.

I don't even know why I'm defending Avatar, but it's more than the sum of its' parts

If the first one comes out and grosses 1.5 bil is it considered a disappointment?

No, Fox doesn't care, because now they have Cameron all in for four films

I'm sure it's been explained, but what's the prevailing reason Avatar grossed so much, yet left so little cultural impact?

I guess when you think about it, it did have a pretty big impact on the movie industry, in terms of 3D interest and whatnot, but nothing really beyond that.

3D was bloody impressive on a 70mm IMAX screen back in 2009.

How will it be different in 2020?

Virtual Reality?

I'm serious by the way. Gantz:O did something similar but it was a promotion. A whole movie made for VR would be $1 billion well spent.

Given the return four films will make, $250m per film isn't too bad. They'll make that back in spades.

I wonder if that includes the years of R&D since Avatar.

The equivalent will need to be Virtual Reality from the ground up with special gear just like the original Avatar with the custom gear for 3D. This is definitely the next logical & technological step.

Cameron never does anything half-assed.

If there's a single director on this planet that can be trusted with such an insane amount of money, it's James fucking Cameron.

$1 B is too low. Its 4 new Avatar films...

All of these films will be more than $250m.

Marketing plus the real budget gets the total over $2B I think.

Of course marketing deals and blah blah will help.

Still, its a massive undertaking. Hopefully there is a decent crew filming behind the scenes kind of stuff too.

cameron is gonna come out and say "8k resolution at 48fps with visuals that make avatar 1 look like a playstation 1" so no need for marketing pushes

Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen

Wouldn't be a Cameron production if he wasn't take a huge gamble with a lot of money. 250M on giant blue people isn't a gamble anymore so he's gonna get that fix from somewhere. Why not shooting 4 movies all at once.

$1,000,000,000 for movie sequels, huh? Yeah, money well spent!

But since this is Avatar, they might actually do really well.

I’m still not sure why people expect this to fare any better than Alice Through The Looking Glass did.

I don't think it's entirely comparable, Alice in Wonderland did ride Avatar's wave, but people looked at it with regret because it didn't live up to the hype as the first 3D movie after Avatar. Avatar provided a memorable theatrical experience which is why people flow to AIW in the first place, so people have a reason to remember that Avatar theatrical experience fondly but not AIW, whoever made Alice 2 is not exactly James Cameron either. Plus, AIW never had the influence Avatar had in markets like China, which will contribute significantly this time.

This is absolutely insane but if anyone can deliver 4 remotely decent films it's Cameron.

Shame Cameron will be almost 70 years old by the time these films are done though. Knowing his typical schedule that probably only means another movie or two.

Don't think so. I think this is it for him. Don't think anything else interests him.

It’s something to look forward to for sure. I’m on the “I quite liked it” train with Avatar.

That seems like one hell of an undertaking. Plus I don’t get why they would be filming in no order whatsoever when surely a hell of a lot of it is going to be green screen driven..? Anyone? Why place that burden on, well, everyone, when surely they have this much money to spend they can shoot things in some sort of sequential order. I feel bad for the editors of this behemoth production(s).

We're getting Alita: Battle Angel next year, which was at one point his passion project, it's at least getting some input from Cameron, so I remain interested even though he's not directing.

I guess I just don't understand what else this story could be besides what it was in Avatar 1.

So either he's gonna blow our minds or we're going to be underwhelmed.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???

Dunno. I thought he would never be able to top Titanic, but he did with Avatar 1 so I'm excited to see what he has in store for us.

I just wish the universe he’s working in was more interesting.

I know I’ll get jumped by fans for saying that, but it’s how I feel. The first movie was boring, and part of that was the setting. It’s just not that interesting to me.

8 more hours of the big blue jungle smurfs? /sigh

Wants to outlaw technological innovation.
For the amount of time he spent writing and editing the script, this might be the greatest trilogy of movies since...something?

I'm always in for high budget epic sci-fi, but I wish there was some indication that he's not going to fuck it up again writing-wise. I'm afraid that the wild success he had with Avatar means he's not going to learn his lesson after that Pocahontas ripoff/white saviour bullshit.

250M per movie doesn't seem that crazy by today's standard. Would make them cheaper than most of the Pirates movies.

Doing 4 movies at once is perfect for Cameron, if the first one bombs unexpectedly, the studio already funded the other 3 anyway.

Shit, if I had a billion dollars I'd trust it to James Cameron over investing in the stock market. Easy decision.

Whoa is it really happening?

Who wants to bet Sam Worthington gets killed off halfway through the second one?

48 fps is dead. 24 fps is the accepted language of cinema.

I really hope the films are good because now that 3d is played out these films wont be able to ride that wave of immersion, which helped contribute to most of the sales in the first
