Longest game of the year. It’s rare for me to hit the 100 hour gap just with storyline. It’s also one of the kost memorable in what has been potentially the best games year in a decade.

It was well worth the wait. I don't say it's perfect, but it was basically as good as I hoped and either my favorite or 2nd favorite Persona game (and Persona is one of my favorite series).

Even in this absurdly strong gaming year of 2017 my game of the year.

About 60 hours in and haven't finished it.

Honestly, I actually dislike it more and more because of how long it is. It's actually borderline tiring to play/read because of the constant need for every character to want to make a comment. Basically "yes, let's do this mission" but in different phrasing from every.single. character. It's draining.

I cannot wait to finish this though and never look back. No game needs to be this long and drawn out. I doubt I will ever replay it , even for an expanded (!) edition. It's a shame because the gameplay is good (typical Persona, so nothing new if you wanted something new), and it's a nice looking game with a good soundtrack. But the story...they could've shaved so much out and it wouldn't have made a difference.

Basically, for the time this game needs, there are tons more better, more varied games to try in your life. You can finish two amazing RPGs that are better than this in the average 80-90 hours this is commanding (Chrono Trigger and FFVI, as a examples).

I bought it day 1 and put in over 100 hours into it and still haven't beat it. I'm pretty damn disappointed by it. It's been pretty boring. Haven't found the energy to beat it yet.
This is how I feel but with much less time, I enjoyed the first 20 or so hours enough to keep going but after another 20 I just couldn't take the repetitious nature of the game anymore.

No i know these things, we are just interpreting the events differently, which is fine....

Brian I wanna write some stuff for you about the game, but tbh A) this probably isn't the best thread for it and B) Its been a while since I played it so I can't convey what I'd be thinking in enough depth.

You are right though that personal interpretation is probably playing a large part into how we're all looking at the game so I wanna link you to Guess Who's fantastic summary of P5's narrative and the messages Atlus was likely trying to convey. [OBVIOUS SPOILER WARNING TO ANYONE WHO HASN'T FINSHED THOUGH]

...Maybe it won't do anything to change how you feel but maybe it might improve your retrospective on it.

Game of the Year and one of my top games of all time.

It has really stuck with me. So much, I've enjoyed watching other people play through the game on live-streams and enjoying seeing their reactions. It's pretty much an overall improvement over P4G in every way except for a couple of moments and characters in P4 which I still hold in high regard. However, I don't agree with the general consensus that P4 has a stronger story. I found P5 to much, much more engaging and memorable of a story and I found the overall "flash-back/flash-forward" storytelling method to be really clever and appropriate. Lots of fantastic twists too! Also, the story plays a much stronger role in the confidant relationships and the overall tone of the game. You and your friends really do feel like outcasts. If I have any complaints it's a few brief moments of poor taste regarding stereotypes and some between palace story sections drag on a bit too long.

I have a very high opinion of Persona 5 and enjoyed my time with it. Spent all of April just playing that game, many hours a day every day for weeks.

It's maybe my favorite game of all-time. Definitely flawed, but the core message really speaks to me. And, well, it's a Persona game.

It was good, not great for me. I feel like the friendship aspect of the Phantom Theives was lacking compared to P4 where you felt like all of the characters actually liked being together. I also thought the game was way too long cutting about 30 hours off of it would've been great. The final boss reveal was super lame to me too. From the trailers and everything I thought the Theives themselves would be more sure of themselves. The trailers made them come off as really confident and the intro did as well but it wasn't really like that in the game.

Overall, I enjoyed it and I'm glad I played it but it had some serious flaws for me.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Still my GotY and Ive played all the good stuff like BotW, Horizon, Nier and Prey.

I need to beat it still, I got to the 6th palace. Really good game though!
The turn based gameplay is perfection, and the OST was really good.

I enjoyed it a whole lot, but it still doesn't quite top my favorite, P4. It's unquestionably the best in the series gameplay-wise (except for a couple of dungeons being a bit too long), and the battle UI style is something I hope becomes the norm for JRPGs in the future. (Falcom has already adopted it with Trails of Cold Steel III, so that's a good sign.) I really liked the overarching themes of the story (especially of the final arc, which a lot of people seem to dislike) but there was one plot point in particular that really rubbed me the wrong way.
It felt wrong that all of the scenes of the cast figuring Akechi out were hidden until after the fact when the protagonist is supposed to be a self-insert for the player. Obviously just showing them at the times they take place wouldn't work, they'd have to be executed differently, but it felt lazy.
And while I wasn't bothered as much by the localization as many (except for a few particularly terrible bits), it definitely has more issues than you'd expect, or than should be accepted, in such a high-profile work. Definitely not up to the standard of 3 and 4.

Hated it. Got to the third palace and gave up. Everything was just so repetitive without a real main story to go with it. Plus the constant jumping in and out of palace was way too much for me.

Shame because I loved P4G so much.

Didn't really grab me like I had hoped, despite loving P3 and P4. I stopped playing during the artist's dungeon.

Actually thinking upon it a little, I like Persona 5 more stylistically (it's hard to argue with on that front) but Persona 4's nuts and bolts story and character give me a warmer feeling.

My wife and daughter have said the same thing in a recent conversation. We've been playing these backwards. P5 was our first and we liked it so much we played P4G next. P4G just had a better story and such a great cast, it's our favorite. Decided to play 1 now, it's ok, but not really keeping anyone interested.

It was pretty good overall, but I felt there were some pacing and story issues that I didn't expect from a game that had been delayed for nearly two years.

Loved it. My favorite Persona title to date (haven't played 1 or either part of 2). Dialogue here and there was pretty weak thanks to either translation or inserted exposition.

Handcrafted dungeons > Procedural
Would love to see them step away from the high school setting and make improvements to the weakness system
Keep demon negotiations

Great fun, but doesn't know when to quit. I would prefer a game half the size, it could still completely work with some heavy editing.

It's currently my GOTY and I doubt it's going to be topped. It's definitely a very flawed game and yet I still find myself thinking back on it and whether it tops P4G as my favourite game of all time, even if it doesn't it's safe to say that I'm really happy with how it turned out.

My GOTG, and the GOTY by a very wide margin and the best Persona game in the franchise. It's JRPG perfection, with a phenomenal cast, a great story (with
one of the biggest twists I've seen in a game
), and more than enough to top tier content.

Better than P3 as far as the dungeons and battles go, but it's behind both P3 and P4G in terms of music, character development, and story. It also could've been about 30-40 hours shorter. Already sold my steelbook copy as I have no desire to revisit it. Still enjoyed most of my time with it though.

Best game in the series. I didn't really know if a new game could top Persona 4 for me, but they managed to do it. The characters are all great, the music is wonderful, and the story was significantly better than past Persona games. It's just such a well made RPG, with some great boss fights, a much better fusion system, and the confidant stories were really great.

Finished it and I don't really care for it. Cast was uninteresting and the game dragged for far longer than i expected. OST was okay, great vocal tracks but not much else.

Not a bad game though, my little brother loved it! But it wasn't for me.

My GOTY. It was a tad long and the music wasn’t brilliant but I really did love it. One of my favorite games ever. Also I think it’s easily the best of the new Personas. Though it definitely seems like I didn’t like P4G as much as everyone else did.

Its pretty fucking garbage that they sold eight thousand costume dlcs but couldn't issue one fucking patch for bugs with trophies and sidequests

also the writing in the game is very bad, not the translation, the writing, the reveals, the character substories especially.

Combat engine was so fun i almost played the whole thing 3 times, they could really have spent some of their like 10 years of development time that they didn't spend making it have a coherent plot on making repeat playthroughs more interesting. Even with the enemy difficulty going up I was still fine exploiting most of the same weaknesses and fusions.

Definitely going to put more effort into going back and finding the Trails games and the SMT IV series then bothering with the next persona game. Wish i'd played 4 instead of watching the anime because that one had an actual plot / actual twists

surprisingly disappointing...

graphics & music are great. story & characters? a backslide from p4, which was a backslide from p3. hate the whole 'generation war' / 'us vs the grown-ups' focus, which i think is cheap, unimaginative, & (literally!) juvenile...

just writing this makes me realize how disappointed i am - i prefer not even thinking about this game. & this from someone who's replayed the previous 2 multiple times :) ...

A standout 10/10 game and a very strong GOTY contender. It's insanely long though, so I won't be replaying it anytime soon.

I'm still waiting for a sale on it. I didn't enjoy Persona 4 enough to finish it, so I'm waiting on a deep sale to get 5.

Better than 4 not anywhere near as good as 3.
It’s in my top 10 this year but I’ve alrwady forgotten about it. It wasn’t worth the wait despite being a good game.

It's a fantastic game overall, arguably one of the best JRPGs ever made even. It noticeably drops the ball in a couple of areas but when Persona 5 is moving at full throttle, it's absolutely sublime and unlike anything you've ever experienced.

It's currently my #2 as far as GotY goes, with NieR: Automata sitting at #1. Nier is pretty much in another plane of existence in regards to how much I love it, though.

I really like the spring till mid summer sections. After summer I felt like the game dragged on and it was a struggle to finish it. Hell I think I finish the last dungeon and fastfoward all the dialogs and cutscenes.

Same. If it wasn't for NieR Automata Persona 5 would have been my GOTY.

Really good, top 5 for sure right now and still maybe contending for 1. Over 100 hours in and I'm still on a second playthrough now. Can't wait to see what a new director does for this series though.

still find it to be a pretty major disappointment, as a huge fan of 3 & 4.

felt as though it was very stylish and had a killer soundtrack, but i found that only a handful of characters were interesting and the plot lacked any kind of hook due to how on the nose the translation was.

felt as if the technical aspects of the writing were very poor, like the narrative framing and constant repetition. personally, the way the game constantly went back and forth between past and present killed the pacing and any sense of threat, and it was so cleae who the betrayer was from the moment they were introduced it was gonna be pretty dang funny if it was them... and then it was and it felt so obvious. as other people said, constant reaffirming of gameplay goals in dialogue even after they happened got boring in the first arc.

i still have severe issues with how a game about misfit teenagers treats sexuality, but smarter people than i have elaborated on it more eloquently than i ever could.

similarly; arc about ann sufferinf sexual harrasment at the hands of a teacher, followed by her being forced to model naked? regardless of how the scene plays out that's ridiculously poor taste and just utterly skeevy.
