Blade Runner 2049 Review Thread

I paid close attention to that scene on my rewatch last, as I've seen some posts here and elsewhere that argue that it's just a tone-deaf scene the misunderstands consent.

I'm not sure I totally buy that. I think there is something intentional going on in that scene. For one thing the sensual and romantic score of the scene takes a dark left turn as soon as Deckard approaches to close the door. The entire mood of the scene changes, it's very apparent to me, that everyone involved in the production knows the scene has just taken a dark turn.

I also noticed the way that Deckard talks about Rachel early in the film, he refers to her as "It", when he talks to Tyrell about her early on. To me, my reading of that scene has always been that, at that point in the film, Deckard still views her as not-human, as a thing. He wants her sexually, maybe romantically too, but he still doesn't see her as an equal.

It's a tough scene, and I totally get being bothered by it, and I fully respect the feelings of those that find that it ruins the film for them, but I do think there is thematic and artistic intent behind what's going on there.
Yeah the music sounds straight out of a horror film when he slams the door and doesn't let her leave.

So is this basically the non-spoiler thread for the film now?

I went into the OT and immediately got hit with unmarked spoilers, yeesh.

Deckard is the slavemaster trying to hunt down those that have escaped the plantation

Roy Batty is Harriet Tubman

With a mean 'fuckin head squeeze finisher

So you refuse to watch the original Star Wars Trilogy? Refuse to watch The Terminator? Or Aliens?

Refuse to play older video games?

A world without those films, or Super Metroid, or Super Mario World, or Castlevania, or

I can't

Just the idea of all out refusing to watch any movie from the 80s or earlier...it is just maddening. Why would someone deprive themselves of that?

lttp: Blade Runner 2049

This movie made NO SENSE to me at all. First off, why is there Atari logos everywhere if it's 2049? Atari died like back in 1982, duh. Second, why are all the robot people so sappy and emotional while all the normal people are monotone and shit. Shouldn't it be the other way around? I haven't seen the first one but I was told this was a reboot of that but nothing made any sense in this! If the robot people have super strength and can break walls, how can they get killed from one shot from a pistol? Why is this so looooooooong, there's all these shots of people just staring at pictures and eyes and walls like oh my god I was bored out my mind watching this. My friend Alex Trimboli told me Batista was supposed to kick ass in this but he can barely put up a fight against Ryan Gosling? This took me completely out of it, Batista could totally whoop Ryan Gosling's bitch ass irl.

This movie was dull as shit and I regret ever renting this on Amazon Prime. 2/10 stars, only giving this a 2 because of my boy jared leto
The "LTTP" header makes this post because you know someone is gonna make this thread like a few months after release, despite that not actually being late "to the party".

Their hot take must be heard.

Yes older movie

Not a fan of feeling like I'm forced to watch a 80s movie to enjoy this one

With Blade Runner, everything in that movie has aged well, like, the only thing that looks slightly outdated is the fire at the beginning of the movie and that's just a few seconds out of a 2 hour long movie. Everything else is not only timeless but movie now-a-days wish they could look even a quarter as good. Not watching an old movie because it's old is crazy, but doing this for Blade Runner, is even crazier.

I can't process it.

The only "classics" I have found myself unable to watch are silent/foreign language films like Seven Samurai, where my ADHD kicks in and I have a terrible fucking time keeping attention.

And I still have attempted to watch Seven Samurai like 10+ times.

The opening scene with the eye looking at the flames while Vangelis' score plays is awe-inspiring. I pity anyone that can't get chills from that.

I'm like 50 percent sure before the end of the year someone will make a "Ghost in the Shell was better than Blade Runner 2049" thread.

Yea its mind-blowing.

Predator - still looks awesome

Aliens - awesome

Alien - awesome

T1/2 - awesome

Blade Runner? - THE GOAT.

A lot of movies nowadays look like dogshit comparatively. I'll take Blade Runner 10/10 times compared to some overproduced shiny-looking green-screen ass (GOTG V2 sticks out in my mind recently - I like that movie).

Sat in my local cinema waiting for this to start and they're pumping in the original film's soundtrack.

Blade Runner Blues playing right now and the mood is electric.

I'm pretty sure I could close my eyes and still get there. Don't really need the visuals themselves. Vangelis carries the atmosphere of that movie so hard.

The DP and production staff of Ghost in the Shell deserved a better script and director. That movie was boring as fuck but goddamn was it lovely to look upon.

As proof, people posting in this very thread have already been spoiled because it's not labeled.

It's not like it's universal knowledge that OT means unmarked spoilers

Don't kids have to sit and watch Eisenstein any more in Media Studies? I suppose it's all "here's the first episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, sorry it's in 4:3 but that's just the way it is with these classics."

It's no surprise people don't really know that OTs are now unmarked spoilers by default when now and then you still get a movie with two OTs, one more unmarked and one for marked. If there's only one, I would assume it's for unmarked, even if the thread title doesn't specify that, but a lot of people won't.

has anyone actually just asked ridley/harrison/other production people about this? haha

i'd love to know what the actual intent was

I thought this was visually amazing. I normally don't like 3D that much, but I caught a 3D showing because it was the right time. - I find the cost of contrast and brightness and dulling of colours to be not worth the advantage, but the 3D here was incredible.

I thought the story was neat, but the movie DID feel a lot longer than it needed to be.

Huh... I didn't even expect this to release in 3D...
