SNES Mini Classic Hacking | More games, more borders, more gooder.

So going forward, what are we looking for as for updates to the HakChi2? I am thinking of jumping in now, but if there are some stuff we will need down the road, I wanted to get an idea on how I would update my SNES with those changes?

Sorry to ask again, I'm just looking for a real easy-to-understand answer as to what needs to be done to dump Virtual Console ROMs from the Wii U and its Wii mode. If it's a really difficult process I won't bother but every time I try to look up what needs to happen I seem to only find very partial answers.

I'll make an easy step by step process for you in the ripping thread, I'm just busy at work right now.

Really kinda frustrating that I lost all the original roms that were on this thing. No idea why that happened. Now Secret of Mana(the one I installed) isn't working and I don't know what to do. :(

Did you not back up your original kernel? That’s on you

Key questions I have:

1. How do you prevent loosing the already existing catalogue on the system when in the process of adding new games.

2. Is adding box art a necessity, or is there a default box art that comes with the ROMS?

3. How do you go about boosting the speed of Starfox 1 or 2 as shown in that video???

Is anyone on a Ryzen system getting "Can't write to USB" errors in 2.0.20.15? I'm getting the same error on every USB port on my system.

1) There's a button that says "Original Games" in the menu that I missed. Use that.

2) It's not a necessity, but it looks nicer. It's really simple.

3) I have no idea.

Hopefully native border support.

Did you manage to work out the CRT editing and scan line mods? If so please share i would like to try this.

Yep. I messaged mntorankusu and he knew what was up.

I simply had to set the permissions for one of the files. He edited his post to add the important info. So, you can simply follow his post here to get it done.

It is beautiful.

I'm curious if it is the same on the NES classic, 'cause I can't stand the blurriness there either.

The games that come with it are apparently stored in read only memory, so even if you did want to delete them you can't - the best you can do is hide them

2. Is adding box art a necessity, or is there a default box art that comes with the ROMS?

theres a google search button when adding games and its as easy as double clicking the image you want

Dumb question but how can I tell what version of hitachi you have? Mine says 2.2 but I suspect there’s is more and I can’t seem to find it.

I just downloaded what I thought was the latest
Version a few minutes ago. It worked but felt warm while testing... of course I could be paranoid from having it hooked to my pc so long and stuff.?.!???

Go to Help->About...

should tell you what version you're working with.

It's fixable, but I'm not very familiar with the script syntax and whatnot, so it would take me some time to work out how to do it. A simple way would be to just remove the part of the script that sets the frame, but then you'd get nothing for any game where you haven't manually set one.

I thought it might have a graceful "no frame" for a game launched without the line there, but instead it just crashes entirely. Ah well, back to the drawing board.

My originals are still there. I did hide ff6 but that's because I like the patched version out there. I keep folders off. Make sure you save your kernel!

I havent done the starfox boost yet but I assume it's a patched ROM.

Oh and box art is easy. You can click the Google button after adding a game. It will show different art you can choose from. Just click one. Or you can go crazy by adding your own locally.

Anyone editing their scanline filter should also give -magfilter 2 a shot. It's a nice middle ground between the blurry bilinear filter and the sharp pixel filter.

It's a command line switch on the NES classic, per game, to do scan lines only no CRT blur. Last I did mine anyway.

I managed to get mine sorted with 101 games, including hacked ROMs for Breath of Fire II, Bahamut Lagoon, Langrisser, Clock Tower, etc.

Everything works apart from:

- Super Aleste
- Super Star Wars
- Turtles in Time :(
- UN Squadron

I get black screen and C8 error for the above. But I've seen people playing them! They're all NTSC roms. I'll try downloading different ones.

- Super Bomberman 3 PAL patched onto NTSC doesn't work (kicks you out to main menu)

- Smash Tennis PAL patched onto NTSC has weird graphic glitches in menus. A bit of a faff, but I can live with it

- Super Turrican 2 has extremely low volume (it may be my ROM)

- Magical Quest starring Mickey has some weird music thing going on

- Uniracers. PLEASE SOMEONE FIX THIS, it's one of my favourites!

That's just making the game way too fast.
Actually it's just doubling the speed of the Super FX chip.

The Super FX chip was supposed to be released at 21.4MHz speed, but it was halved to 10.7MHz last minute due to technical issues. Super FX 2 (in Starfox 2) does run at 21.4MHz. See Wikipedia.

Is it just me, or does it take way longer to start up when modded?
It's a side-effect of disabling thumbnails. Let's hope it gets better in future. Until then if you want fast reboots you need to keep thumbnails on.

Or I could make some standard "what's your favourite artwork from classic games" thread, that'd be fun too.
Yes, please.

Does this happen automatically? I certainly didn't do it deliberately and I didn't notice anything different aside from the one new game I added and a doubled startup time.

Ah lovely :) Thanks to you and mntorankusu for the info.

Cluster does currently recommend using an Uninstall, but this is mostly as a catch-all to fix the voltage problems that people may or may not have. It's just easier to tell everyone to start fresh. (Honestly, it takes 5 mins and you lose no game stuff, so probably best to take the advice)

So flash back the original firmware and then flash the new custom firmware?

.

Doesn't matter the reason. SF1 runs too fast that way and it makes it harder to hit anything since everything moves so fast.

It's also irrelevant that the SFX chip got its speed halved, because SF1 was synchronized to play at that final speed. Doubling the speed on the SNES Classic because 'that's the original intended speed' is flawed because that desynchs the audio on many parts, and it makes the game harder too.

If that method allowed you to make the game run at a smoother framerate without making the game go faster, then it would be perfect. But that's not what it does. But whatever, if people want to play the game like that, so be it.

So I dumped the Kernel and have it saved off. My finger is itching over step 3. Not sure why. It is like when you get that message while playing a game "Are you sure you want to continue? Some quests and areas will no longer be available"

That is freakin' amazing and it's October so I want to play some Zombies. Great game. I now want to utilize SFC art. I will probably get around to it eventually.

Could never complete this game, i would get to the massive baby and use up all my ammo (as the thing is a bullet sponge) and die many times

Also, when I hooked mine up and wanted to dump the kernel, it did not ask me to install the driver .... I am not sure why as I have not done that part.

Have you played Evermore before? Because the game barely has any music by default.

At least the version I have doesn't have any background music, has all the sfx tho.

I've had 0 problems with Turtles in Time.

Same here - Turtles in Time plays without issues on the stock emulator (Canoe). Secret of Evermore is missing most of the background music. That's why I play it through RetroArch. Just have some issues with RetroArch not quitting properly sometimes and when that happens my Saves aren't saved :(

I keep going back and forth on modding mine. The inner child who wants every game I ever owned/played on it keeps saying “Do it!” and the grown-up in me who hates piracy says not to and that it’s wrong.

good to know I'm not alone lol

I will install RetroArch later today. And by saves are you talking about savestates or in game save?

Got some of the more problematic games working with Retroarch. Up to nearly 40 games, lol.

I have got a random question though. Is it meant to make an horrible clicking noise when you first turn on the mini? It only does it until the menu loads and the menu music starts.

Here you go SOLDIER.

It took awhile but I think this should fit your needs.

If I had higher resolution assets to work with I probably could have made this look even better. If anyone can help with that I can make an even better one.

Have you tried the US version Space Megaforce, which reminds me, people say the SNES was cripple by its slow CPU but Space Megaforce is a super fast, super hectic game with no slowdown. If the programers know what they are doing the can make the cpu sing!!
