SNES Mini Classic Hacking | More games, more borders, more gooder.

Here you go SOLDIER.

It took awhile but I think this should fit your needs.

If I had higher resolution assets to work with I probably could have made this look even better. If anyone can help with that I can make an even better one.

Very nice! Thanks!

Also, I want to ask again because I want to make sure: do you still get the overwriting progress warning with added games, or does that message only apply to the original 21?

So decided to make a PAL StarFox 2 box. Used the purple from the JP version and kept the blurb from the NA version.

Thanks to the web based manual, getting all the necessary art was very easy.

Another awesome cover. A 1995 that never was.

The -no-lowlatency command line switch greatly improves CPU performance, presumably at the cost of a little bit of extra input lag. The good thing is that you can turn the -boost-fx WAAAAY up while using -no-lowlatency without any CPU issues. I turned it up to 32 with no lag.

If you need a good SNES template, check out this reddit thread.

https://www.reddit.com/r/miniSNESmods/comments/74wglv/im_making_custom_box_art_for_snesc_requests/

That person has been creating some darn good SNES box art, and it's their template I'm using for my stuff. The google drive link in that reddit thread includes a GIMP template, but I've uploaded a PSD conversion in case you use photoshop:

Have you tried the US version Space Megaforce, which reminds me, people say the SNES was cripple by its slow CPU but Space Megaforce is a super fast, super hectic game with no slowdown. If the programers know what they are doing the can make the cpu sing!!

I just found out it had a different name in the US, I've always known it as Super Aleste. It's likely that I was using a PAL ROM then, I'll try Space Megaforce instead, thanks!

I will use this as the base. Is this fine for you?

I have that in a higher res too.

way dark, but full:

proper colours, probably the one to use between these two:

Pretty sure you could find the full one with proper colours in a nice resolution, but it doesn't come up immediately.

edit: actually the first one just looks bad. Yeah, don't use that except for the wing bit if you're going fancy.

So I grabbed the kernel but it did not ask me to install the driver, it just grabbed it (2672 KB US model). Am I good to go? I have no idea if it is a good back-up of the original before I screw everything up.

One thing to keep in mind during the localization from Super Aleste to Space Megaforce they removed all instances of character artwork and story.

It's unfortunate there isn't a translation patch for it.

I got it. Let me get to work. Shouldn't look too much different from my BOF2 one.

Cluster recommends to uninstall the custom kernel before updating to a newer version of Hakchi. Will this delete the games I already added to it (and more importantly their save files/states)?

Sounds like the right file. If it was corrupt, you'd have had an MD5 error from hakchi.

It will temporarily delete the games, but they'll be back when you put the custom firmware back on and resync. You won't lose any save.

So I finished a collection of icon-based cover art for various games, all in more of a "Switch menu" full size style utilizing original artwork, varying box art, and more. Examples:

EoisNR8.png
GHPlyx3.png
ldEp1nu.png
H8Sq3t4.png

rYz1gWJ.png
tH6n3Zk.png
7ZO9D2a.png
2Cjl710.png

And examples in-menu:

Dimensions for each are 228x204 with a 2px black border. I didn't create one for every single title or anything, but I don't mind creating more for certain ones if anyone has requests.

Here is the full Imgur album with all the ones I've created so far. I'll update it over time in waves, I'm sure.

EDIT: My Google Drive folder has access to all of my custom borders, icons, etc.

Anyone familiar with the A Link to the Past REDUX patch? Does it actually include all of whats in the DX hack? Or do I need to patch them both?

Well, well... it seems that I was wrong and the system does indeed work with even smaller thumbnails. I've tried 12x21 and 10x21 and they both work.

I think that for the time being I'll settle for transparent thumbnails, so the arrow doesn't go over the limits of the screen. But I want to make something cool, like a progress bar or a visual indicator of the game that's selected, without using boxes or icons.

I'll have to brainstorm this idea.

This is along the lines I was thinking of doing myself, because I'm really not married to "authentic boxart" including ESRB ratings - thanks for doing the legwork on sizing and proving that it looks pretty good in practice!

I played that one a while ago so I hope I'm not misremembering things, but I'm preeetty sure it includes DX.

So this is in place of box art? This is awesome. I have been having analysis paralysis on what to do here.....

Okay whew, my sfc classic is coming tomorrow and I'm getting prepped for what I can do with it. Few questions:

I see there's a retroarch thing for it... But how does that work? I don't want to spend a ton of time in menus configuring it to get things to run, I'd prefer to have them just select like other games, with maybe one "universal config" on it, is that feasible?

How does it handle different aspect ratio box arts? Mainly concerned with using SFC box arts alongside SNES art.

Yo can I get that FDS Metroid and Zelda on here?

just got back to the US not too long ago and finally have time to play this, and I saw this come up!

Tried it out and I'm getting a slight sound glitch on the custom games every few seconds is that normal?

Secondly can I integrate the files with the regular games?

Do I/should I have my SNES attached to my machine when adding games? I start the app and am thinking of setting up the selected games/art/etc before hooking up my machine.

Here's another one

I wonder if I should start taking more requests. This is kind of fun.

This is a definite improvement. It helps identify the box better when it’s resized.

Speaking of which, do we still need to take images like this and manually resize them? Even though I’m following the recommended dimensions, the original 21 boxes are taller and more visible than the modded ones I put in.

As for requests, I’d love a cool Demon’s Crest box without the crappy county fair gargoyle art, if that exists.

For Super Aleste (J)? Yes there is a translation patch, but it's for the BS-X version, but it should work just fine.

Yeah the BS-X patch apparently does not translate anything but the menus. If the reviews for the patch over at Romhacking.net are to be believed.

Man, as much as I love the nostalgic look of the original boxes, these kinds of icons make the games stand out way better. I just might swap into these.

Hope you make a bunch more: Can you make one for the first SMT?

Fantastic stuff!

Thank you so much!

No problem at all. Yeah, I can't stand logos/unlimited copy taking precedent over artwork. I like to be able to keep it away from the marketing as much as possible.

So this is in place of box art? This is awesome. I have been having analysis paralysis on what to do here.....

Since all of my added games are in a separate folder, I don't feel so odd seeing them scattered about with the preloaded titles. All the varying sizes would hurt my head.

Hope you make a bunch more and put them up in an album.

I plan to! I want to make some for all of the "common" games everyone seems to be adding to their consoles, and just add more via request.
