Yeah. I assume her and the rest of the team are completely out of jobs now. Hopefully the team will land on their feet after all this. Sucks Amy never even got to release a game after leaving ND.

Report says EA is discussing her next move with her.

this is the purest Jeff laugh I've ever seen

this is like the complete inverse of creeper Jeff

Talos Principle VR is out! I've been looking forward to this so much. I remember those worlds being oddly serene even on a monitor, should be cool to figure out those puzzles using actual physical judgement.

The state of AAA singleplayer games is fucking dire. A few gems in a mountain of shit. Who is left besides Sony and Bethesda?

are you saying people are sick of paying full price for half-assed trash when there's a billion GREAT indies at $20 on the market?

After the disappointment that was FO4 I am not sure we can classify all Bethesda games as gems. They really need to switch up/innovate on their open world formula. I went from enjoying that game initially (first and only fallout I have played) to actively disliking it. By the time I finished the game I actually regretted buying and playing it.

Doom was great though and Wolf 2 looks like it should be as well!

Sucks that most AAA games are going to become games as service though.

That Visceral news sucks as does the change in direction/philosophy of that game. I am finally feeling old because people eat these games up and most of them just turn me off so much. Even my 40 hours with Destiny was mostly spent on my own.

AAA has been a mound of shit for a long time. It's only now getting worse thanks to loot boxes and Games as a Service and other nonsense bullshit to squeeze blood from the stone that are consumers. AAA is going to die and it'll be at the hands of its developers and publishers.

There are some Japanese devs who put out great single player games this year (Nioh, Nier, P5) but how often are they going to be able to produce games of that quality that also sell well?

Flip the problem on its head, are there genuine ways to improve the efficiency of game development and get budgets under control?

Nope.

The only options tend to be underpaying workers to get the budget under control, or employ less workers and have a much slower turnout rate of games coming out.

Theres no win win for studios. Unless they focus on making non AAA games.

AAA games are basically the summer blockbusters of video games. Regardless of GaaS, they share a similar fate in that chasing high production values and offering little substance will eventually mean their demise. Costs will continue to balloon out of control as developers try and chase the graphical dragon. GaaS just means AAA will get their faster as they alienate more and more casual fans.

Wasnt games as a service and to a greater extent DLC, originally used to combat games being traded in? Wouldnt cutting out gamestop increase the revenues of those studios where single player games could survive then? Or am I being naive?

I just don't know how studios/pubs can get more money out of consumers in order to justify the extreme cost of development without resorting to unsavory means (lootboxes) or outright upping the MSRP of games

More stories in that universe would be rad, but I think Raziel & Kain's story ended perfectly in Defiance. What a terrific final line that game has.

I mostly want a remake of the first game just to see how it would look using today's tech. On the other hand though I'm not sure anyone could fill Tony Jay's shoes as the Elder God. Man, I adore that universe. The game had exquisite writing and fascinating characters.

How do Sony manage it?

At some point it feels like companies are straight taking the piss.

I feel like Sony has enough money in the bank to bankroll any studio, which includes marketing. It seems like everything they fund is a guaranteed success at this point. When your game sells millions of copies by itself, it's not really an issue anymore.

*looks at Dreams*

More and more I'm finding myself thinking I wouldn't even care if the AAA industry imploded.

I feel like between two or three super high quality indie games always coming out every month nowadays and mid-budget Japanese games and low to mid-budget PC games I'd barely notice. I'm already getting to the point where microtransactions are making me not buy them anymore anyway.

At some point they should just be blocked from buying studios

Visceral was always EA internal, it was never an external purchase. It was just a subset of the HQ at EA Redwood Shores before, and has some form of continuity going all the way from before the Lord of the Rings PS2 beat 'em ups, through the Godfather and Simpsons games, and then some.

Teams that make compelling games and have series that people are interested in. Sony also takes a relatively hands-off approach on development when it comes to different in-house studios. Sony also has several studios that have brand recognition among core and casual gamers, while studios like Ubi and EA are only known as the actual publisher, not the studio per se.

A part of is that the single PnL isn't just "Do our own games sell". It's also, "How many consoles do our games end up selling" which leads to "How many games do those consoles sell afterwards" which leads to "How much ongoing digital revenue are we getting from long-term engagement in those games".

I wonder if this the Dan and Alex wrestling feature they talked about ages ago, either way, very excited.

EDIT: Didn't realize I was already LTTP on this, oops.

Sure. All I'm saying is people shouldn't put Nintendo on some weird pedestal. Nintendo has their own way to make additional money like Amiibo and Fire Emblem Mobile is pure gacha. They're a company like everybody else.

i'm proud of you oti
