Mario Odyssey is #10 for 2017 on Amazon. Will it end up the best selling Swich game?

This will never get old.

Why are we talking about the best selling game for a system less than a year old? I'm looking forward to Odyssey releasing, but I just find the question by the OP absurd. It's something you bring up years into a system when a lot of games are established. The question should have been, will Mario Odyssey outsell Mario Kart and Zelda?

OP is using Amazon best of 2017 sales with 2 months left in the year not a bad question to ask which game will get the top spot

I think Mario Kart will still edge Odyssey out by year's end

This thread made me realise that Nintendo has stopped placing its logo on the covers of its games (or at least it has for Switch releases).

3D Marios have pretty bad sales compared to the 2D ones, so no.

A Mario game has chances of being the best seller but it isn't this one.

Overall? Very very doubtful.

This year? With bundles I think it's actually fairly likely. These bundles appear to be far better stocked than the Splatoon 2 bundles were outside of Japan, so I think they will much more greatly affect the overall units sold.

But overall it probably won't come close. Pokemon, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Smash Bros and probably whatever eventual 2D Mario that comes out will all do better lifetime.

Remember, Mario Kart Wii sold 38 million units.

The hype for this game is through the roof. So many people that know I have a Switch have been asking me about it. So it seems like this is going to sell a ton of consoles to people

Switch + Mario will be one of the biggest items to get under Christmas Trees this year. It’s easier to find a Switch now, but I bet by November it’s going to be much more difficult again. All the parents will want to give their kids a new Mario - especially now more than ever because virtually all existing parents today had access to their own Mario experience growing up.

Yeah the bundle, which is $380 because it includes the case as well, is currently in the top 20 in the hourly chart and has been around there for a while. That bundle alone will end up pushing a lot of units.

Nope. Zelda BotW is the most popular game of the platform.

I think the top 4 this year will be:

1- Zelda
2- Mario Kart 8
3- Mario Oddysey
4- Splatoon

That will stay for a while. Of course when Pokemon launches it's going to take the #1 spot.

Probably too late to outsell them now yeah, but with odyssey nintendo will keep selling them units.

Super Mario 64 on DS kept selling for years until last year lol.

I expect Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Kart 9, a Pokemon title, or whatever the name of the "New" Super Mario Bros. entry on the console ends up being to be the Switch's best-selling Switch game, judging by previous console and handheld's lifetime sales.

Keep in mind that 3D Mario has never been as popular as 2D Mario.

Zelda has never ended up in the best-selling list of any of the recent Nintendo platforms except for The Wind Waker HD.

Zelda will not be more popular than Odyssey once it releases, and Odyssey will have over two months, including the holiday season, to pass it. I think it will.

Edit - even MK8DX may pass BotW by the end of the year, if it hasn’t already.

MK8D almost overtook BOTW on Switch in its first quarter (until June 30th). I would be shocked if MK8D hasn't overtaken BOTW Switch sku yet.

I doubt Zelda is the best-selling game on Switch right now, and it definitely won't be after this holiday. More likely ranking is:

1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
2. Super Mario Odyssey
3. Zelda
4. Splatoon 2

I agree. We can debate forever about what Nintendo franchise is actually better, but Zelda has historically never outsold Mario and I don’t see that changing any time soon.

Normally I'd say Mario Kart will up with that title, but they seem to have dropped the ball with the Deluxe approach, when it comes to reaching full Mario Kart's sales potential on the Switch.

No, it'll be close though. Overall it might overtake Zelda in a few years but Mario Kart will be on top unless they release 9 soon.

You don't understand why people want more of the things they want?

He's saying that that is the only situation in which he can understand it.

What makes you think that? MK8D jumped up to 75% attach rate in just over 2 months of sales. I don't see how the sales potential is looking like it's damaged.

At least it has its chances to be, the Switch reveal trailed is the most watched one on Nintendo's US youtube channel with almost 28M views.

I don't think MK8D outselling Zelda is a sure thing at this point, as BotW has charted higher than MK during the last three months of NPD. It's very possible Kart has outsold it when you factor in other regions, but it's certainly not guaranteed.

Dont take off work for a videogame, especially on a Friday when you have the whole weekend ahead of you.

ehhhhh... I took off for Zelda and the Switch Launch.

I'm also DJing the night before and will be out late.

Considering working extra hours during the week so I only have to use 4 hours of vacation time.

There are a lot of factors contributing to my logic of taking off.

The hard thing about being the best seller is that Mario Kart does extremely well over the holidays. I think it will edge out Zelda though.

That graph is fine IMO - it's the pie chart which is nonsensical
While the graph itself is fine, it is still meaningless because there does not seem to be any correlation between the two subjects--which is why the projection is bullshit.

Edit: It also leaves out other, more important factors that would normally go into a sane projection (time on market, price, etc.).

Honestly that attach rate surprises me, as I didn't have many of my Switch friends getting Mario Kart 8D, because they already had MK8 on Wii U. That and a general feel of less excitement, even on GAF the online community died off pretty quickly compared to MK8 IIRC.

I could be completely wrong and having a biased view due to myself not being too happy with the Deluxe approach. I need new tracks damn it.

I took a few days off for Switch launch (I called it Switchmas). It was amazing! I would definitely do that for Mario but I have a wedding two weeks after.

The graph was mostly fine but still used a lifetime projection based on the current hardware sales, which about doubled eventually. The premise that you can make a rough estimate of what percentage of people would buy Mario Kart based purely on previous hardware/software ratios was also proved wrong by the eventual MK8 sales, which are roughly 2 for every 3 Wii Us IIRC.

MK8D is a new game to me, so I'm not that bothered by the lack of new tracks (all are new to me!), but I think there will be a MK9 in a few years, so you will likely get new tracks at that point imo.

It's also silly because it doesn't give a good read of how the attach ratios compare - which is what it's trying to do. You have to read the absolute numbers of both software and hardware and kinda try to interpolate to figure out what's the progression. Needed a line with the attach rate %.

I'll probably eventually pick up MK8D because of how much of a cheater-filled clusterfuck the Wii U MK8 lobbies have become, but I'm waiting for a B2G1F sale to pop up within the next few weeks before doing so.
