Let's celebrate the greatest form of DLC

Lootboxes!

No, the real answer is Standalone DLC expansions:

Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon
GTAIV: The Ballad of Gay Tony
Assassin's Creed: Freedom Cry
Dishonored: Death of the Outsider
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood
The Last of Us: Left Behind

I'd actually go as far to say all DLC campaigns so I can include things like the excellent Shovel Knight DLC

When DLC first became a thing this was my hope for it, that'd we'd see smaller games made after larger projects, using existing assets and engines to quickly launch these fun little 2-7 hour campaigns

Blood Dragon is a great example as it took a game that tried to be pretty serious and turned it into a neon stained futuristic 80s action romp

Yes I'm still mad we never got any DLC for GTAV

What do you think, GAF? What are you favourite DLC campaigns? Do you want to see more of them? Do you think we'll see less of them as it's more profitable to implement a games as a service model?

Infamous: First Light was much better overall then Second Son, just wish it was longer. Having a single solid set of powers makes the gameplay much tighter, and neon effects look incredible.

The Witcher 3 - Blood and Wine

Big new region, some graphical enhancements, 20 hours and more content - DLC done right.

I am also still in the camp of disappointment in terms of no GTAV DLC. Ballad of Gay Tony is the best GTA barring maybe San Andreas.

Though not completely standalone, special mention to every piece of Fallout New Vegas DLC. All of them were top tier and I loved the post release support even if the game was a buggy mess at times.

Half expected this thread to jokingly talk about horse armor.

Edit: OMG, yes, how could I forget both the Witcher 3 campaign DLCs. Blood and Wine was good, Heart of Stone was amazing.

The Witcher 3 had the best expansions in years. Puts already great DLC like The Old Hunters to shame since it's immeasurably better. Not standalone though.

Despite all the great things that have been standalone, I still think Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare may be my favorite out of all if them.

My favorite dlcs/addons are:
- Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhaal
- WarCraft 3: The Frozen Throne
- Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction
- Half-Life: Opposing Forces
- Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen
- Bloodborne: The Old Hunters

If we want to talk MMO expansions, the base Heavensward experience in FFXIV was top notch. It perfectly encapsulated the old school final fantasy feel of journeying with a party on a pilgrimage.

Stormblood was excellent too for different reasons but I give the nod to HW for hitting all the right nostalgia notes and ending with one of my favorite fights in the game from the pure spectacle standpoint.

There should be a cool name for standalone expansions. Like, "expandalones". Except something better, cause that looks vaguely spanish.

Haven't finished it yet, but so far I have enjoyed Heart of Stone more.

Dlc i loved were rarely stand alone, tbh.

Dark Souls 2.
Evil Within.
Witcher 3.

As long as they are substantial and priced correctly, I welcome them.

Shout out to the Grim Dawn expansion pack (and the upcoming UnderRail expansion)

Also I know this isn't the thread for it but these deserve a mention. Make sure to take a look into Tamriel Rebuilt, Skyrim Home of the Nords and Province Cyrodiil if Morrowind is your thing. They're just as good as the Tribunal and Bloodmoon (and I think they did those provinces better than Bethesda did themselves in later titles).

Undead Nightmare for Red Dead was outstanding fun. Was basically the gaming equivalent of a Simpsons 'Treehouse of Horror' episode, putting all the characters you already knew into a horror scenario.

Minerva's Den for Bioshock 2 I remember really enjoying, but can't remember too many specifics outside of some of the major plot details.

My personal favourites are probably The Shivering Isles (for TES IV: Oblivion) or Lair of The Shadow Broker (Mass Effect 2).

I love a good expansion. I hope the current loot box craze will die off and we can go back to the model of base game + several pieces of dlc (smaller 'cosmetic' add-on 'packs' & one or two proper, larger expansions).

I'm looking at Assassin's Creed: Origins with interest right now (just waiting to see some reviews) and if I do buy it, I'll probably go for the 'Gold Edition' which includes the game, all the add-ons and a season pass for the future expansions, all for £79.99. I think that's a fair price and, in my opinion, the game doesn't need any loot boxes or other optional ways to pay more real money for anything at all. I would support that business model all the way.

InFamous First Light is in some ways better than Second Son. Also the Borderlands 2 DLC campaigns were pretty great, one of the only couple of times I bought a season pass :)

Infamous festival of blood is another great one. (Pretty sure it's standalone) I'd also say Uncharted TLL but that just feels too big to be classified as dlc.

Same for old blood and death of the outsider. That's why OP said standalone expansions.

I'd argue that Burial at Sea Part Two mechanically is a way more interesting game then base Bioshock Infinite - even if its plot unraveled any goodwill left for the first game.

Windows Updates!

My real answer is Burnout Paradise. Free updates for so long and by the time the paid DLC came around, I felt like I owed it to Criterion.

If we forget about that XBLA game, at least the series went out on a high.

I love it when games go the "what if?" route. It should happen more often.

These are definitely my favorites. Festival of Blood is my favorite part of that Infamous both preceding games were excellent. Burnout Paradise is definitely my favorite racing game of all time too, and most of the dlc just made it better and better.

The souls games have consistently had really good and well priced DLC's
The games themselves are already of really high quality and even so some of the most memorable locations and bosses are found in the DLC

If we are talking about smaller DLC turn it's Titanfall 2. All cosmetic and no loot boxes, you can buy any item you want directly without having to go through random loot.

This.

Seriously, before playing the Witcher 3 you could have sold me this as a $60 game and I would have been more than happy with it

I agree. Standalone DLC Expansions can be truly amazing. Makes me sad that GTA 5 never received the SP DLC.

Are standalone expansions really DLC though?

I mean, DLC literally means Downloadable Content, so yes (and no in case there is a physical release).

I miss expansion packs such as Age of Empires 2 The Conquerors and C&C Red Alert 2 Yuri's Revenge

(if these count)
