DF: Shadow of War: Early Xbox One X vs PS4 Pro Graphics Comparison + Frame-Rate test

I really like that they mentioned that it's up in the air how much devs will make use of the extra 4GB of RAM, while Pro only has an additional 512MB. I'm really curious how often the extra memory will be used, but to me, it's probably the most exciting upgrade the system has.

DF points out several low resolution textures that are quite common in the game world. Even after installing the high resolution texture pack these textures remain the same low resolution odd looking textures.

That's interesting and good to know. The DF video made it sound as if these textures were all fixed on the Xbox One X.

What type of game would satisfy people? From what I can tell, no matter what game gets showcased, people will dismiss it and throw out negative comments.

I know PC has its advantage with graphics, but the hardware is a closed ecosystem console. So for the X is doing, even a person not a fan of the X got to admit that it's looks fantastic.

It’s not an artistically pretty game. I don’t know what to tell you. The one X improvements are obvious and cool to see, but it will be nice to see what it can do with a prettier game. I personally want to see the differences in AC origins myself.

Any word on how filling the extra 4GB with higher resolution textures affects load times?

I’ll be really curious to hear how developers decide to arrange content on disk. Avoiding seek times by co-mingling assets for an area is a straightforward and effective solution when all systems have the same needs. It gets more complex with optional UHD asset packs, and even in best case loading twice as much will take twice as long. Hopefully there are enough architectural changes to improve load times compared to the base model in order to mitigate or eliminate any regression here.

Load times are one of the reasons I’m betting against the historical 8-16x bump in total memory next generation.

I was doing the same and people kept trying to tell me it's not nearly as significant as the GPU difference.

Maybe people will see the light!
I have been saying the same thing. Even without 4k texture you still need more ram. When I went to 4k on my pc the amount of ram is higher when in 4k than in 1080p, it just needs more to do 4k. Then you add in 4k textures and it needs even more.

The decision to go from 8gb total to 12 was smart but even with that Ms at first said 8gb for games and 4 for the dashboard then they reallocated another 1gb to games reducing dashboard to 3gb to give devs even more ram.

Maybe it's just YouTube, but I don't see that much difference. X1X looks alright, I guess.

XBX definitely showing an improvement on the PS4 Pro. It's good that developers are going the extra mile to use the full resources on both systems.

This is what is going to be happening I would imagine from now on. Every couple of years that tide is going to turn back and forth if we keep getting mid gen cycles.

I can see that too, MS and Sony leapfrogging each other with newer beefed up systems. I guess it's no difference when a new GPU launches every year. Business.

This is why I kept harping on the RAM over any GPU power difference between the X and the Pro.

The textures make the game look significantly better than the Pro. It's far more noticeable than resolution.

Looks like another good port. Interested to see how well it compares to a high end PC.

Xbox One X

Full NATIVE 4K vs pro
Greater LOD vs pro
Extremely high res textures vs pro
66% more pixels output vs pro
Greater Draw Distance vs pro

Sublime :)

This post is almost unsettling. These are pieces of plastic to play games, not some weapon for your stupid console war.

I feel like I haven't seen comments like these since the early days of this gen in 2013 and 2014...
probably from people like me... 😐

These comparisons are fun but as a primarily Xbox gamer(I have all 3 though), I am more interested in the xbox one Vs the X. Seems to be quite the jump. Its why I didnt a pro. Im happy with my ps4 performance for the most part. The jump from the Original X1 to the X will be great.

What the hell happened with the Pro there. The difference shouldn't be that great, should it?

In Mordor the textures were at least inconsistent on Pro. There were examples like this but also cases where they were never as blurry as that.

In SoW they look unacceptable on all platforms if we're being honest.

Did you expect something else?

Yeah, I don't get the surprise. The consoles are all x86 and related APUs at that. We're basically at the point of comparing GPU benchmark listings. It's no longer a debate between PS3 being technically more capable, but not effectively due to architecture. They're the same architecture now, same APU design, same OEM.

With that said it totally is possible for a game to so heavily depend on something like more RAM that it excessively runs worse on other hardware than it should.

It looks a bit better, but the price is absolutely nuts unfortunately.

I would expect, at least for XB owners, the price is quite right if you're trading in. I'm getting rid of my S with around seven games. Should drop about $200 off that price.

damn, those are pretty decent upgrades over the already upgraded ps4 pro version. nice

its an improvement for sure....is it a $500 worthy improvment? eehhhhhhhhhh. Ill probably just wait for whatever the real "next gen" will be.

There's definitely quite an improvement there for people. 😊

I do still think it's an ugly game though, even when I've seen people playing it on a top level PC with maximum settings. I imagine that's something we'll get if there's a follow up to this one too as I felt the original game was ugly as hell and that ran at 4K.

You know, personal preferences and all, it's still quite an improvement over the other consoles for people who do like these games.

Seems like a great upgrade! As a PS4 Pro/PC owner, I don't see much reason to upgrace byond the Xbone S myself (which I already barely use). But for those int he Xbone ecosystem, I think this looks great. Really excited to see what Ass Creed can do as well.

If your baseline is a $400 PS4 Pro then you already upgraded once this generation.

If your baseline is a base PS4/Xbox One then the jump is MUCH larger. Still probably not worth $500 to most folks, but if I had to make a choice between them and I was going for a "Premium" console I don't think the $100 difference in price would matter to me so I would opt for the best available.
