iPhone X | OT | November 3

Yep. Ready to retire my plus. Love the screen but it isn’t practical to carry in your pockets or a suit.

Every time I hold a smaller model I love the idea of it but I want the dual cameras and don’t want to give up the larger screen. I think the X is going to be a perfect middle ground.

I wonder when the upgrade program pre approvals will be activated. Can’t believe we are almost a week away from preorders.

Think I’m going to upgrade from a 6 after trying out the 8 Plus camera in store- that thing is a huge step up from what I currently have. Still a little wary about some elements of the phone (FaceID, no home button, the notch) but have slowly convinced myself the upgraded camera, internals, and screen will make up for it (and those concerns may be non-issues after some time with it, ideally).

Feels a little weird to purchase something this expensive with mixed feelings, I’ll say.

Looks like do the 8 preapprovals went up two days before, on that Wednesday. So if they follow that framework we have just under a week until preapproval

I’ve been comparing the stainless steel apple watches in store for a reference in deciding between the two bands. Silver definitely shows scratches easier on all the demo units I looked at. It’s click wheel iPod backs all over again.

silver may scratch easier, but will also polish out. If you scratch the black you're stuck with it.

When preorders in the uk open can you sign up for the yearly update programme, or does that require physically going to a store on preorder day?

looking at the app at least, it seems you can preorder? If you go to 'phones' and scroll to the bottom, it has the upgrade program listed there. Shows the 8 and X but X is greyed out. If you select the 8 you can reserve for instore pickup. Should be the same for the X?

Personally I'm buying outright, and might see if I can switch to the IUP instore, but don't want to risk it just in case. Have the money transferred from a 0% credit card ready to go.

Down payment is $279 at T-mobile for 64GB, which isn't too bad honestly. After local taxes the X should be ~$355 . Just gonna put down $500.

If AppleCare plus wasn’t so expensive now I’d buy it outright. The IUP having that makes it a good deal to me.

This damn price...£1000. Ugh, all I wanted to do was upgrade my iPhone 6, and not get what looks (superficially) to be exactly the same phone over 3 years later...

(Yes, I I know the latest Galaxy Note blah is almost the same price and doesn't have a miniaturized Kinect built in. I know the margins on this phone are probably smaller than the 8, but it still stings).

I spent a couple years telling everyone I met that the Plus model really could fit inside a pants pocket (because no one believed it), but indeed it was not good for one-hand use. The X ought to be the perfect middle ground between the larger screen, usability, and form factor. That’s really the main reason I’m interested - I haven’t thought much at all about FaceID, what the notch looks like, or the quality of the screen itself.

1. Can I buy the iPhone X unlocked that will work with any carrier? My 1 year of free Sprint expires in a few months and I want to switch to Tmobile or Verizon. If I buy the Sprint version of the X, will it work with T-Mobile or Verizon? I'm planning on buying the iPhone for $1000 with a CC.

2. Why is the X $1100 on BestBuy?

1. An unlocked sprint phone will work on T-Mobile, yes. But Apple doesn’t sell the iPhone X SIM-free at launch, so just activate it on your account and pay full price for it, and it should either come unlocked or be trivial to have sprint unlock

2. Because Best Buy always charges above MSRP at a phone launch because they can get away with it.

The Plus model is a bit too big imo. The X looks like the perfect size for my hands.

The 6 (67 mm)/+ (78 mm)/X (71mm) are all too wide for comfortable one-handed use unless you have giant-sized hands.

I'll wait for something closer to the 5/5S/SE (or at most ~65 mm wide, like the 2013 Moto X and 2017 XZ1 Compact).

Bros, think fast: If you were off contract, what carrier would you go with?

Assume data is more important than talk minutes.

I suddenly realized I should be considering options beyond AT&T but don't know what to look at and don't really have a lot of time between now and pre-orders to do proper research. I've been with AT&T since 2007 and I'm still on the grandfathered unlimited plan @ about $90/mo with a ton of rollover minutes. I use about 8GB per month or so based on my last few months of usage. I actually used 23GB last month (hurricane, power out, only internet) and that was the first time I've ever used more than 10GB that I am aware of. But I appreciated it being there when I needed to use it and I never experienced any slow down, notifications or anything like that.

I assume there is no universal iPhone X or one that would work with multiple carriers should I find coverage or service below my expectations? I believe my mother went with Sprint recently because it was less expensive, but she's been dissatisfied with her service and is probably going to switch to someone else soon. I'd like to avoid that sort of experience if possible.

I might need to make a thread about this. Hmm.

"giant sized hands" I have average size hands and the plus is fine. Y'all need to stop those generic posts. They're too big for you.

I’d buy a X Plus. I am on the iPhone Upgrade Program because I’ve accepted that I will be paying Apple every month for life so hit me with that upgrade y’all.

Same here - my 6 was starting to feel it's age before iOS11, and the upgrade path was unclear. The X looks neat, but it's going to be hard to get, and likely have some issues on the bleeding edge. The 8 is solid, but not as exciting.

I decided to move from the 6 to the 8, and it's been great so far. Everything is faster, the camera upgrade is nice, and I didn't have to jump through hoops to get it.

A year from now, when they reveal the X-2 or whatever, I'll upgrade to that and hopefully keep it for a few years.

How is the regular sized 6 too big for one handed use? I can literally extend my thumb to every corner of the screen.

After watching some unboxing/review videos of other flagship phones such as the Samsung Note 8, LG V30 and Pixel 2, I honestly prefer the look of those phones over the iPhone X. Especially on the screen sides. The pronounced bezels on the X and the odd mic/sensor/front camera shape protruding the actual screen shape makes it look outdated already and is not even out yet. And yet they are asking $1,000 bucks for it anyways. Only so that by this time next year, iOS 12 would run funky in the phone just like iOS 11 is doing with most iPhones right now, even with some iPhone 7s wich is unaceptabble since it's only a year old phone... As always with Apple, it's better to just wait till their second model so they can get right all the features and polish they visioned from the first model. No doubt this is gonna be an awesome phone anyways.

Apple can break my thumb and charge me $1000 to fix it, I don’t care. Whatever it takes to get the biggest iPhone.

Honestly if my iPhone is too big for me to properly use and hold it, Apple is doing something right for my American soul

How are OLEDs these days in terms of the burn in and those issues? I remember the vita would get what looked like smudges (only noticeable on an all black screen though). I figure that apple would really only start using OLED tech which is mature enough to not have mass issues. They seem to be one of the few manufactures that will replace an LCD display with one dead pixel with no questions. They probably figure 99% of iphone owners would never notice if it does have one so it’s better to make those 1% happy.

Can’t believe we are so close to preorders. One week from tonight.

OLEDs these days are very unlikely to get any burn in. Under "normal" usage you will not experience this at all. My old Galaxy S4 (2013) phone did get a slight burn in from the top bar after 3 years, but this is a few generations ago so that would not be comparable to todays OLED screens.

Haven't seen those black splotches since the Vita/Galaxy S3 days. The tech has improved since then, but burn-in is still very much possible, even if you're careful and only use it normally, it can still happen. My OLED TV being proof of that :(

I literally don’t care about the screen size as long as the Apple website tells me I will have the most recognizably flashy phone tier

I too will rationalize any decision Apple makes and have no regrets

I'm sure these seemed funnier in your head.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?

Wow - this is me, exactly. Never clamored for a bigger phone, but got a 6 Plus on launch, a 6S Plus, and now rock a 7 Plus.

I MUCH prefer the feel of the regular size phones. Buddy got a silver 8 the other day and I love it. But the battery battery life and dual cameras are just too much for me to give up.

At this point I'm sure most people are sick of hearing this, but I wish Apple would make a smaller version of the Iphone X. Make the screen 5" with the same small bezels.

ask people about coverage in the area and check 3rd party coverage maps.

As of the end of the month, Apple's gonna have four different iPhone screen sizes up for sale and four different iPad screen sizes up for sale, but I think it's patently obvious in both product lineups that that is neither sustainable nor the long-term status quo for the product line.

I wouldn't be terribly surprised to see the iPhone collapse back to three sizes in the next few years (iPhone SE size, iPhone X size, and iPhone X Plus size). Maybe just two.

It wouldn't be a bad thing for Apple to consolidate their offerings - it's pretty confusing right now.

But yeah, if the iPhone X turns out to be a winner, I'd be satisfied to see the form factor of the iPhone X in the three sizes you mentioned.

I love Verizon. It’s not good inside concert venues or when there’s a lot of people but otherwise it’s great. People like to talk about T-Mobile and stuff but man the speeds I get on my work phone with that are so slow in comparison. Probably depends on your area

I'm sorry I don't follow what you're trying to say here. What device would hamstring my data throughput? The only device being discussed is the X. Did you misspeak?

ask people about coverage in the area and check 3rd party coverage maps.

yea that's on my to-do list and I've gotten some good feedback in the thread I made about it.

ah. So t-mobile has good prices but quality of speed varies. I'll see what their situation is like here in south florida.

Between the iPad Pro line and the high-end iPhones, there's also an odd amount of primo features that come to one line but not the other (Retina HD and now Super Retina, 3D Touch in the iPhones, antireflective coating and Pencil support in the iPads). Some consolidation *between* product lines would be nice too.

KGI: iPhone X Production Woes Ending, but Only 2–3 Million Units Available for Launch

With just one week to go until pre-orders for the iPhone X begin, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a new report indicating that the "worst [will] soon [be] over" with regards to production difficulties.

According to Kuo, the biggest hurdle has likely been the flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) for the device's antenna, due to increased complexity and initial supply chain partner Murata's inability to meet specifications.

Special materials, recipes, design, processes, equipments and tests are required for antenna FPCB, as the specifications for iPhone X antenna (supplied by Amphenol (US)) are higher than those of iPhone 8 and only Murata (JP) and Career Tech (6153 TT, NT$30.1, NR) can meet Apple's requirements. Murata (originally with a 60% order allocation or higher) won't be able to resolve its issues before 2Q18, and thus has been fully replaced by second supplier Career. We believe Career will ramp up in November, as capacity expansion takes time, and its materials, recipes, design, processes, equipments and tests are different from those of Murata.
A secondary bottleneck appears to have been the FPCB for the wide-angle rear camera lens. Unlike competing dual-lens camera smartphones from Samsung and Huawei, the iPhone X's wide-angle and telephoto lenses use separate PCBs, and supplier Interflex has reportedly struggled with quality issues on the part for the wide-angle lens.

The third bottleneck that has received signifcant attention in recent weeks is the TrueDepth camera's infrared dot projector, or the "Romeo" component. According to Kuo, previous design issues that led to poor facial recognition have been addressed and the "worst is behind us."

Overall, Kuo is cutting his iPhone X shipment estimates for the fourth quarter to 25–30 million units, down from 30–35 million, and he expects that 2–3 million units will be shipped into distribution channels ahead of the launch. As a result, initial supplies will be very tight, as has been extensively rumored. Kuo says shipments will "pick up markedly" in the first quarter of 2018.

An absolute farce if true. Shipping 2-3m phones to 50 countries?

Are we sure this isn't 2-3m spare phones allocated for launch day walk-in purchases? I highly doubt they'd ship this low.

I hope you're right.
But the title of the article is "KGI: iPhone X Production Woes Ending, but Only 2–3 Million Units Available for Launch" which I'm now gonna add to the post :lol

Sounds a right shit show if true.
