Good anime based games?

One Piece Unlimited Red
One Piece Pirate Warriors 3
Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3 + Reborn
Berserk: Band of the Hawk
Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage
Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment (didn't play the sequels yet)

come to mind.

Heard good things about the Attack on Titan game and Fate Extella, too.

And like someone already mentioned: Asura's Wrath isn't based on an anime but is probably the most "anime" game I ever played. It's utterly fantastic.

The Ultimate Ninja Storm games are the best way to experience the plot of Naruto.
Yup. They blow the anime away in terms of production values and pacing. The motion comic style stuff is really bad in UNS4 though, although I understand why they did it, otherwise they probably wouldn't have been able to make it at all.

Maybe one day CC2 will give this treatment to One Piece.

The Narutimate series is pretty good. I'm particularly fond of the PS2 games, but Storm is also a lot of fun.

Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm series

DBZ Tenkaichi 3, Budokai 3, Xenoverse 2

One Piece Pirate Warrior 3 (if you like Warrior style games)

Yu-Gi-Oh on the GBA, can't remember which one, but I think it was The Sacred Card that I've enjoyed.

My favorite dbz game (pre-Dragon Ball Figter Z).

DBZ budokai 3. There were also some PSP games (shin budokai) with the same gameplay and were good too.

-Bleach Soul Carnival (JPN exclusive) was pretty fun too (better than the Heat soul ones).
-Digimon games on PS Vita and the new one on PS4.
-.Hack games on PS2

Violinist of Hamelin

Thanks to this game I got myself reintroduced to anime and heard for the first time the word manga. Manga is a must read and anime series is not so bad. One of the best series with classical music. Movie is short yet funny. A fan translation exists fortunately. One of the best OST on the SNES as well

Oh. They are using same artstyle as the manga.

This might be little off topic but I hope we get another Ghost in Shell anime but this time Motoko's personality be base on the manga.

Actually, the aesthetic of the game is completely unique unto itself. It doesn't look like the movie or Shirow's work.

Tbh, I think it's the best take.

Man, I didn't even remember Soul Carnival. Wow! This brings back some memories.

Googling it, it apparently came out in 2008? Feels like a much older memory, for some reason.

These two are incredibly fun games and they are by Ubisoft of all developers. Original music (!), an amazing and authentic open world that's actually fun to traverse (!!!) and a fighting combat that I enjoyed as someone who gets no enjoyment out of any other fighting games.

Man, I miss them so much. I wish Ubisoft had made Shippuden games. Playing Ultimate Ninja Storm after The Broken Bond was fucking rough. You might enjoy the combat (I don't), but the open world is utter shit.

If you like Musou games then you can't really go too wrong with any of them (Gundam and One Piece especially).
The DS Jump games were pretty good, so by extension the One Piece Gigant Battle games are probably also pretty solid.
The One Piece Grand Battle games were cool as well, but especially the PS2 era ones since they were like Power Stone.
Artdink's Macross games are fun, Macross 30 especially is really good. On the other hand though...
AM2's Super Dimension Fortress Macross is incredible.
Gundam Vs. and Gundam Breaker are probably my top Gundam games.

edit: yes! the ubisoft 360 Naruto games were so good.

Sad to see Galak-Z having been overlooked so far. Great shooter though more in the flavour of 80's cartoons than "anime".

Asura's Wrath is the right answer.

Ah yes in 2008. It will be 9 years old in 3 days so that's quite old. The second one, Soul carnival 2, came out in 2009.
While searching it I saw that it was the first time where they showed ichigo full hollow vs ulquiorra (a short snipped), before it was the fight was shown in the anime itself.
I think that's what hooked me on to the games lol.

Too bad that the last bleach game (PS3) was a hack and slash one.
When it comes to the Big Three, I find the Naruto Ultimate series the best.

I would still say the art style is very similar to Masamune Shirow but looks more polished. It even has same Fuchikoma design.

What about Silent Bomber, Hard Corps Uprising, and I think a Mega Man game like X4 or something.

It definitely leans closer to Shirow's than Oshii's but it does take some cues from the film.

But look at how different Bataou and Aramaki appear.

I have the game on my PSP Go right now. It's an awesome arena shooter.

Zooming around and up buildings in the Fuchikomas still feels satisfying.

Yeah you are right, Bataou and Aramaki do look much different than the manga. Im guessing Stand Alone Complex got Bataou's design from the PS1 game.

There was an Afro Samurai game that had the free cutting Zandatsu from Metal Gear Rising way before MGR was a thing. The game was pretty dang decent.

Also, there's a mildly serviceable Samurai Champloo game for PS2. It's the VIDEOGAME equivalent of "filler", but with only one season, I was thirsty for ANYTHING with ma dudes Jin and Mugen.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
The Legacy of Goku Trilogy are the best DBZ games and come in a close second.

Agreed with these. I knew literally nothing about Naruto and DBZ, but was compelled to play the GBA games as I had read they were well-built action RPG's, and the Naruto 360 games looked incredible.

Both series won me over. Not enough to make me a fan to start reading/watching the source material, but I got a real sense that I had experienced an interactive rendition of the major origin events/early arcs in a completely engaging package. Recommend both.

Also, I got stupidly attached to one of the Blazblue story modes. I kind of loath the actual fighting, but the insanity of the characters and events unfolding in the massively cross-connected narrative kind of pulled me in. They even have dumb gimmick episodes and humorous in-joke side stories to break up the dramatics. A guilty pleasure and GGXrd didn't nearly have the same impact.

And yea, GitS PS1 was a silly little action game with the Tachikoma. Quite enjoyed it at the time, but that was 20 years ago and I have no idea how it holds up.

This is far too good of a fighting game for being on the DS. There is also a sequel with more content but less fun mechanically.

Hilariously, this is a secret revisit of the Yu Yu Hakusho game that Treasure also did way back on the Genesis.

Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans

My favorite dbz game (pre-Dragon Ball Figter Z).

It's understandable as to why, but it's a shame that DBZ: Infinite World flew under a lot of people's radars. Tightened up the fighting, streamlined the capsules, and simplified the main story mode.
And also a rare occasion wherein Yamcha became the most OP fighter thanks to his priority beating every single character's iirc.
