The Evil Within 2 is the best survival horror game since Silent Hill 2

[horrible list]
But the top two, in that order, is indeed correct so all is forgiven.

And I do agree with you to an extent on Silent Hill 2 in that it's a really weak game mechanically and is largely saved by its story, atmosphere/mood and art design. That's still enough to maybe make it into my overall top 10 horror games, but I do think there have been a number of superior survival horror games since. Most notably REmake.

Decided to hook the ol' PS3 up yesterday to see if Dead Space 2 holds up, and, uh...ended up completing a whole playthrough. Goddamn that game is still fantastic. Enemies in Dead Space are essentially walking pieces of bubble wrap, with the dismemberment mechanic essentially "popping" them over and over. The gunplay is top tier with uber-satisfying feedback and sound, and stasis is a brilliant mechanic to manage crowds or particularly twitchy enemies. Then once enemies are down you get to run up and STOMP A MUDHOLE IN 'EM, making items fly out to the tune of the juiciest, meatiest splatter sound effect around. Sogood.gif. For weapons I went plasma cutter/pulse rifle/ripper/contact beam for a good mix of crowd control and precise destruction.

Pacing is so on-point - the game just flies. It's a constant barrage of cool environments and enemies to massacre, with the occasional setpiece to keep things interesting I also love how the game uses jump scares. While some number of the scares are purely there to startle you, most of them are accompanied by an enemy jumping out, which gives them function as signaling the sudden start to a combat encounter. The constant threat of ambush really keeps you on your toes. Economy is also fairly strong, with the ability to purchase power nodes (weapon upgrades) and suits (essentially DS2's answer to RE4's attache upgrades). Finally, the aiming sensitivity feels fantastic even on default settings. The reticle smoothly responds to player input, and regular camera movement without aiming is very quick to allow for situational awareness and fast changes of direction, while sensitivity during ADS is slowed down considerably to allow for precision shots. It's TPS controls done exceptionally well.

Still my number two action/horror after RE4. Definitely holds up to the point where I can play it over and over. You can really see dat $60 million on-screen. RIP Visceral.
Welp, this makes me want to play Dead Space 2. Didn't care for the original Dead Space, though, outside of its lighting and sound design.

I was just thinking the same thing.

2 is great too, but 1 and 4 are my personal favorites. I think it's a much stronger overall series than Silent Hill, too.

Absolutely. One of the most consistent out there (well, I think it is overall). Even 5 which is definitely the weakest one for me was good. I think 2 is really, really overrated though even if it is good. 3 and 4 are my favourites.

Dead Space 2 is basically more of Dead Space 1, only more polished, spectacular, varied, and slightly more linear. It's really, really fucking good. It's definitely one of the better horror TPS games out there, but if Dead Space 1 turned you off then 2 might not convert you.

Couldn't hurt to try it though.

Dead Space 2 definitely improves aspects like combat punchiness and environmental variety, and there are a few new enemies types to blast. It's less intimate than the first's isolated setting, but the trade-off is a more propulsive sense of progression through different environments. It's the Aliens to the original's Alien, where action takes center stage and the pacing is streamlined to give the player near-constant bursts of fun - the best roller coaster barreling through a haunted house ever. I still really like and appreciate DS1 as a first effort from Visceral, but for me DS2 beats it in almost every category.

Also, didn't know you ever played DS1. There are a few moments in DS2 that will hit a fair bit harder as a result >:)

edit - Not sure if this mattered for you in DS1, but in DS2 Isaac has a voice (I actually really like how he sounds). The story still isn't much to write home about, but there's more going on with the characters, and the occasional dumb action movie one-liner helps keep things from getting too heavy.

So much right in your post. Its depressing that I'd probably rather start up a new DS2 playthrough right now over finishing EW2. And I don't even hate EW2. I was just expecting a new game in the genre of 'fucked up rollercoaster ride horror'.

All evil within 2 reminded me of was that really bad voice acting still exists in video games. and don't get me started with the story and the ending.

Way better than the first game but still not a very good game/franchise

I straight-up don't understand this claim about bad voice acting.

TEW2 Seb sounds like the main character from Deus Ex: Human Revolution, only less try-hard. I like it.

Haven't really gotten that far in, but man this game is a bastard on Nightmare difficulty or whatever. The first gun encounter took me a dozen or so tries.

Also was NOT a fan of
a kinda blatant RE7 demo area being practically inserted into this game, I even checked the fireplace :/

Liking the gameplay though, the additions over the first game are really great

OP needs to play PT, oh wait.........

PT is definitely not survival horror, I would say it's the best horror experience in the past decade though, for sure

I loved TEW2, my GOTY so far probably tied with RE7. But the voice acting was soo bad.

Can you point to a specific cutscene? I've been saving them all to my HDD and rewatching them, and they're generally low-key and nuanced, with some actual heart to boot. I think TEW2 is definitely one of the better horror games where overall writing, voice acting and cutscene choreography is concerned.

Some people should play Alien Isolation in order to experience a great survival horror. EvilW2 is nice but far from being best survival horror since SH2

Not sure how I would compare it to SH2 yet but I loved playing Evil Within 2. That and RE7 will probably be in my top 5 games of the year, had a blast with both of em!

Alien Isolation definitely has problems (namely the alien itself and its aggressive, cheap persistence), but those moments where it works its magic are priceless. One of the few games of the last half decade or so to give me a genuine case of the willies.

I straight-up don't understand this claim about bad voice acting.

From where I'm sitting, Seb 2 emphasises way too much, in a generic game/anime voice acting kind of way. I don't know if it's a casting thing or a directorial thing, but TEW1's performances were more low key and better for it.

That's an amusing statement because when I think of what TEW2 did wrong, I just compare it to SH2. Imagine if James constantly wouldn't shut up about what he needs to do, or what just happened, or how much he loves Maria. Sebastian is way too talkative to be an interesting horror lead, and there's too much dialogue in general. Every bit of dialogue in SH2 was important, there was no filler.

There wasn't much tension in the combat either, when most areas are open and the enemies lose track of you as soon as you turn a corner or crouch behind a car just 5 feet away from them.

And sorry but there's no comparing the story. There wasn't an ounce of mystery in TEW2's writing, no twists, and all of the emotional moments fell flat. TEW1 was far superior here, because despite being confusing it didn't treat the player like an idiot. You had to piece things together yourself, which as how it should be for horror games IMO.

I personally don't like first person horror games at all. Im more in to third person horror games like RE4, Silent Hill & Siren, Dead Space and Evil Within.

I just finished a replay of the first Evil Within after beating the second one.

The second one is a better game overall (first one is terribly, terribly, uneven), but personally I think EW1 is unquestionably the better horror game.

The game systems/mechanics in EW2 create an engaging experience, but it lacks a lot of the claustrophobic tension that the best survival horror games have.

In EW1, you feel like you're constantly under pressure in these dark hellholes and occasionally emerge into the open air. In EW2, you're mostly in the open air and occasionally funnel down into those hellholes. The first game has a more pervading sense of oppression and dread.

I think the answer for best survival horror in recent years is currently Resident Evil 7 VR, but that almost feels unfair because the VR itself is what brings that experience over the top.

I could even agree with the top three. But after that it's just like whatttttt.

On topic: Silent Hill 2 was my least favorite Silent Hill game:

1. Silent Hill
2. Silent Hill 4: The Room
3. Silent Hill: Homecoming
4. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
5. Silent HIll 3
6. Silent Hill: Origins
7. Silent HIll: Downpour
8. Silent Hill 2

A company being excited for their new game is a huge slap in the face to all the fans that liked their old games.
They've adressed TEW1's issues, but somehow managed to fuck it up even more. I actually look upon TEW1 more fondly than before, lol.

Wow, that is sad.

I tried TEW after hearing the Easy Allies crew hype it up so much, but the hammy ass dialogue and corny performances did the story and premise absolutely no favours.

It's really hard for me to follow a game that botches storytelling the way TEW does, despite liking the survival horror mechanics.

There's a good game in there, perhaps even a worthwhile story, but it is so scatterbrained and cringe-inducing that I lost all interest in finishing.

It's disheartening to hear that about the sequel, but honestly, it was expected.

3. Dead Space 2
4. Silent Hill 2
5. Silent Hill
6. Alan Wake
7. RE:CVX
8. RE3
9. F.E.A.R.
10. The Evil Within

14. RE0

18. Fatal Frame
19. The Evil Within 2
20. RE5 (this game is mechanically superior, but even worse for atmosphere)

I love Union, a lot like how James has his connection to Silent Hill. I would have loved to have seen a Silent Hill 2 remake where James gets to explore Silent Hill in the way Sebastian does Union.

The torn away streets are straight out of Silent Hill.

I enjoyed the sense of family in both games. I feel like it really gives the fans something to enjoy in 2017. Since where the hell is Silent Hill?

Alien Isolation only saving grace was the tension conjured by the janky gameplay mechanics and desperately simple hide and seek AI.

Once I got killed by the Alien a few dozen times I was bored to tears.

That is not what I consider good, through psychological fuckery.

That's SOMA.

TEW2 is good enough, but you're really overselling it.
SOMA beats Silent Hill 2 in every category except for somehow having worse gameplay.
SOMA doesn't have any combat.

It's automatically better than any Silent Hill game ever made.

I prefer the combat in TEW1. I like the matches as a means to conserve ammuntion. You can set up matches at the risk of getting hit, but you can take out several enemies. Also the stealth in TEW2 so hilariously forgiving.

Resident Evil 6 is the best survival horror game from the last 3 gens. It’s set at night and sometimes you run out of ammo and do puzzles, so it fill all the criteria.

Silent Hill 2 and Dead Space are both excellent games that, design wise, have nearly nothing in common beyond an emphasis on horror.

Survival horror, even just “horror,” encompasses so many different types of experiences that its unfair to compare them directly against eachother.
