People are losing their shit over the whole shower thing yet they both hooked up not long after....how the fuck has this managed to ruin GAF?

Outrage culture, guilty before proven innocent mentality, every gamergater, alt-right moron on the internet frothing at the mouth at the idea of GAF going down, and Evilore having a scetchy past.

This poster describes it pretty well:

Okay, let's be real Evilore. You created this. You fostered this toxic community that destroys people the minute they have the slightest whiff of them doing something they don't agree with. Even if you didn't do it, you deserve the outrage from the culture that you allowed to persist on your fucking message board for so many years. This didn't just happen recently. This shit has been going on for sooooo long now and it's become increasingly insufferable in the past several years.

So, if you're asking why there's a witch hunt, you don't need to look very hard. You had every opportunity to stop this outrage culture a long time ago. And you didn't. And it's come back to bite you in the ass so hard.

Basically this.

Not a fan of more anonymous moderation--if anything rules and actions by mods should be 100% transparent and crystal clear. There should even be a way to get an appeal on a ban.

I'm what you'd call a progressive, but the way any non left-leaning discussion has been moderated in the past has been awful. The slightest inclination that you might be a conservative or right-thinking in your ideologies incurred the swiftest wrath of the moderation team. I'd like to see that change.

Well, that's the thing about sexual harassment. People tend to believe accusations when it fits their political or personal agenda, and disbelieve when they don't.

Like right now you have conservatives upset about Hollywood and Harvey Weinstein, yet ignoring or downplaying the various shady stuff at Fox News, like the story about how Bill O'Reilly settled a case for $32 million.

And then in the tabletop RPG community, you have some recent accusations that the head of one company sexually harassed a woman at a convention, but then the company that ran the convention hushed it up and pressured the employee to not say anything about it.

This.

It is always the agenda never the reality that is important.

Don't think there's anything I can say about these allegations that hasn't already been said. I've read Kotaku, Polygon, and Waypoint's articles on it, and I'm still trying to process it all. Regardless who's "right" in this specific instance, the past few weeks have been a very frightening reminder of just how common sexual harassment is in society. Seeing people I personally know come forward about their own experiences on social media in the past week has been eye opening, to say the least.

When I started posting in GAF in 2009, I was immediately amazed by how helpful the community was then and still is today. Questions I had about games are answered quickly and for the most part in a friendly manner. It wasn't a surprise to see game OT threads develop into their own supportive sub-communities lasting for years (lost track of how many OTs Destiny 1 went through). I won't argue GAF is perfect, but by and large, it's been one of my favorite places to post my thoughts about games. Writing down my annual GOTY list is probably my favorite thing to post on the site. Over the years, I've appreciated the community taking the time to read my posts, even if we don't always agree.

I don't know where this forum goes from here. Whether years from now we look at GAF as another bygone relic of the Internet, or it continues to move forward, I can't say. But it will be different. As someone who primarily posts on Gaming but enjoys reading OT, it's very hard for me imagine OT without political and social discourse. It feels bizarre and I'm not sure that's the right move for this site. But that aside, I enjoy reading and discussing games and all things related to them. I don't know a lot of people in real life who play or talk about games, so it's always been a refreshing change of pace for me to come to a place like GAF and feel comfortable to have those conversations. Perhaps a bit selfishly, it's the reason I don't want to lose this community. Flaws and issues aside, it has been a place that has brought a lot of gamers together (myself included). But now I'm left wondering what the future is for this site.

Yep. Hopefully, in time, things will be just like it was before.

It's understandable why some would feel so betrayed and passionate about recent events. It seems like there's a lot of smoke in the air and where there's smoke, it's natural to assume there's fire. Time will tell.

This new website everyone's talking about, they have animated avatars over there? Asking for a friend.

This is repulsive.

I can't help but agree.

PoliGAF may have gotten out of hand but wholesale nuking political discussion on a website dedicated to an artform is just throwing the baby out with the bath water.

I'm similarly apprehensive. I love NeoGAF, it's become one of my default websites and by far my favorite place to discuss gaming and gaming culture, it has (or at least had) an amazing community of helpful and friendly people. That said, one of the big draws to NeoGAF was its careful curation, and with a huge chunk of the mods leaving it's hard to say where we'll find ourselves in the coming days.

Now I'm hoping that something good can come out of this and NeoGAF might actually become stronger because of this fiasco. It's hard to argue that NeoGAF has a bit of a hive-mind when it comes to certain issues, and that's been to its detriment on several occasions. Hopefully we'll get some new mods to replace the old ones that won't be quite so ban-hammer happy and it'll allow a little discourse every now and again.

Also, could I get a Discord PM please?

Even if you destroy OT political discourse will still remain. Games often are political because they are works of art motivated by people's dreams and experiences which are inherently political. I mean it's hard to imagine discussing Horizon, The BioShock series, Papers Please, Bioware games etc without 'political' discussion happening because politics are rather apparent and in many cases central to the work.

I'm also quite shocked by the lack of respect shown for the community that you built and encouraged. Fostering a community means being willing to communicate even when it's difficult. The way you handled this situation was an epic failure to the community. Stifling that discussion without good reason was bound to be destructive to the community you built. Surely you've heard of the Streisand effect. To say nothing of how much of the contributions of this community in terms of art and camaraderie will now be scattered to the wind. It truly is a sad day.

Given the posts of your's that I've seen(I haven't checked your post history in its entirety as many are motivated to do around here) I expected much more from your response EviLore. Especially considering the time it took you to craft it. It appears to be straight from the playbook of the types of people that you have oft-maligned. It's not that hard to say I'm sorry and I'll try my best to not behave that way(or make you feel that way if you truly think your actions were above reproach) again in the future. I know I've had to many times when my behavior was out of line here on GAF. That's something I've always appreciated about GAF. Getting called out can be a huge impetus for growth if we are open enough to question our own behavior and values.

I first came here to read about games without having to feel powerless and endure lots of racism, homophobia, transphobia that seemed endemic to the gaming community. While I first came here for game related news such as monthly indie threads and the indie game dev thread to watch full grown games spring from the ideas and passion of fellow developers, I found many a home and like mind in OT. Without it, I don't know how much motivation I'll have to continue posting or lurking here.

Off Topic is outside of video games.

That should include discussions ranging from sports, to tv, to politics, to social issues.

Why? Politics isn't why people signed up on a gaming forum and if it is then they should be made aware of how useless and how much of a waste of everyone's time that is.

Is it just me or are there a whole lot of Junior Members whom I've never seen before committing account suicide and/or asking for their accounts to be banned?

I'll keep the account, but move as soon as the new site is up.

A PM for discord GAF would be really appreciated.

Will keep my thoughts on this matter to myself, in the meantime.

And they sighed up for discussions about the Wire, or the NHL?

They don’t have to enter political threads.

I hope GAF can clean up and I'm sure the majority of sensible members are taking a wait and see approach before abandoning for good, but for now it feels a little grubby to keep posting.

yeah, i already brought this up. By the time this was known, the internet was already filled with articles, comments, videos, etc... saying that he "sexually asaulted" her, he was a sexual predator, a sociopath, and everything you can imagine.

do the right thing and step down. otherwise you'll never shed the label of being a skeevy little twat

No he won't. Barely anyone will care. His reputation won't suffer because people would much rather believe men's accounts of sexual assault. Some people will think poorly of him from now on, but most people won't. He'll probably even become a hero to certain people on the Internet. We don't live in a world where sexually assaulting women earns you a bad reputation.

Even in this post you act like a saviour by helping out your friends when things get them down. Your suggestion that you couldn't release a statement until now after finding out about this accusation 6 days ago is laughable, especially when you spoke to certain members of the press and note yourself that you had 2 days before GAF "went down" and had it up yesterday. Take some damn responsibility for your actions for once. Some of the goings-on with certain moderators in the last year particularly should have at least helped open your (and other people's) eyes, but once again you brushed it under the rug and got a chokehold on everyone and anyone's attempts at understanding what had happened and who is accountable, the one thing you do very well here unerringly.

Accept that people don't want you here, you've overstayed your time here and your attempts at managing an authoritarian hold over discussion and the life of the community has always threatened the site. You obviously think otherwise so I will spell it out for you: you didn't make the good parts of the NeoGAF community and site what they were, everyone else did that in spite of you. For the moderators that genuinely were oblivious to these latest events and that did good work on the site you have my thanks. Evilore, if you care so much about this site you will understand that your time is up, but your unwillingness to accept anything ranging from something as small as simple criticism up to the reality of your actions over the years and the impact they have on those your inflict yourself upon unwanted means you won't. Instead you are attempting to cling on with as tight a grip as ever.

If you thought the community of GAF was bad before you don't know what's coming. But, perhaps you do and that pleases you. I might miss certain communities and people here, but regardless of whether migrations or new forums work or not, I'm not sticking around to endure more of your shit.

Ciao.
After literally years, I finally get the pun of your username.

Dunno the sitch. Been here for a decade and don't know any of these account suiciders you're being dinks. I'm not commenting on a story I don't know shit about but I'm here for the community and can we just get back to that?

Obviously that psycho lied about what actually happened in her hotel room. All the Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein accusers are liars too. They’re just looking for hush money. Women are truly dishonest and greedy. Thanks for giving this issue the attention it needs Tyler.

It's the opposite.

It's the juniors defending Evilore or celebrating " the departure of prominent gaffers "

Whereas the folks who account suicided in the past 3-4 hours are the frequent posters.

Yep. Apparently that made him a terrible person who needed to be destroyed.

Just one of many examples of the insanity that was the OT and its members.

I mean just firing someone who worked for you for 12 years because she asked for a raise..after 12 yers is kind of an assholish thing to do, regardless of gender.

You still didn't manage to answer me where Evilore raped someone. Because that's what you were saying earlier. Or are you too busy pulling shit from the internet instead of answering stuff in the thread.

Edit: Oh wait, 22 posts. So you're trolling. Gotcha.

And they sighed up for discussions about the Wire, or the NHL?

They don’t have to enter political threads.

Unfortunately those mods and posters felt the need to leave their community and enter everywhere else however and dogpile people and banning thousands.

Radical people can unfortunately not sit still and need to ruin it for everyone else. It is also safe to assume that future posters wanting to spend all their hours posting about politics and real world news on a gaming forum will be radical as well.

Glad the site is back on i come here for all my gaming news and i was afraid it was really over.
All the people who are nuking their account are ridiculous you come here for gaming news not to talk politics, i'm actually glad they are showing themselves to get banned meaning we won't have those stupid topics anymore which had nothing to do with gaming

So basically, every forum ever? How is talking about politics a waste of everyone's time? Do you call informing others of games and game developers and such a waste of time? Talking about politics is basically the same thing, actually it is even more informing since that actually have an effect on life.

I became aware of GAF by the gaming part of the forum, but what got me to sign up and be active was the political and overall OT discussions, not gaming. not t.v shows, or even sports.

No, not really. A lot of people were unsatisfied but afraid of saying anything for risk of being banned. Most of us just held our noses shut and avoided certain people and topics.

To be 100% fair, most of y'all "oppressed" views were toxic, racist, misogynist, and always 100% shitposting because y'all hated discussions because your ego and pride couldn't stand being wrong so lashing out was the best option.

By choosing to remain you're sentencing the website to die a slow and painful death.

You're putting yourself first, before the community, which is more than enough for me to not want to stick around.

Anything you attempt will only delay the inevitable, you have to know that right ?

Best of luck to the mod team, you're going to need it.

Now can somebody just ban my ass please.

Help be part of the good things moving forward. The future of this site will be only as good as the community of the greatness of the people who make it as such.

Long as we have high engagement the right way here, the site will be fine.

It is up to us.

I think there's something to be said about hoping everyone to just keep going on as a community while at the same time destroying half of the forum, including many of its active communities.

Edit: Oh and I want a discord PM too! Please!

So? First of that was her account of events second, even at worst it means he can be a bad boss that doesn't value years of employment. That isn't newsworthy and sure as hell not worthy of destroying the man.

Yeah I'll take a PM to the GAF Discord too if you kindly. May as well keep up to date with these things.

Not entirely sure what I'm hoping from this site now, we'll see how moderation changes.
