Nintendo intends to maintain a steady stream of releases for Switch

I mean, they really have to, right? It's a very niche system and it's not like they can count on tremendous third party support.

This is great news, hopefully they can do it. 2017 has seen many great games on Switch, hopefully 2018 sees them, too. I wonder if they'll tease something in a Direct for November, or will they take their time until January/February.

New Zelda, splatoon, Mario and xenoblade in one year is amazing. If they keep this output, it going to be an amazing console. Whats left for next year? Yoshi, Metroid, Kirby, Pikmin?

And maybe Pokémon. Maybe.

Considering when Sun/Moon released, it's totally a 2019 title.

I don't think niche is the right word, but the latter half of you statement is true. Although that may very well change next year. I can see the Switch having a very similar life to the 3DS (which is certainly not niche) while being a far superior piece of tech.

so far we have Kirby, yoshi, and fire emblem for 2018 with a chance of pokemon possibly making it at the tail end of the year but there is still a good amount that dont have swith releases yet like

Animal Crossing
Smash Bros
Mario Kart 9 (i truly believe switch will get an exclusive mario kart at some point)

that could show up at any time then you got all the small stuff like mario sports and party games there is still alot they can do.

It'll probably result in a steady stream from my wallet into the eshop.

Glad to see that the Switch will not share the WiiU's fate.

Yoshi, Kirby and Fire Emblem have been confirmed for 2018. There are some third party games confirmed too, such as Wolfenstein, Project Octopath Traveler and Travis Strikes Back. I would also think that Dragon Quest XI will come out on Switch in 2018, at least in Japan.

Then there's also Metroid Prime 4 and Pokemon, but they have no release windows confirmed. Hopefully we hear something new soon.

I'm not trying to douse the Switch's fire but I believe this year has been big for the Switch due to the Wii U being gimped so harshly. All of this could have easily been on its platform.

Hopefully Nintendo has enough projects in the pipeline to at least match the tent pole releases of 2017. So far, from what we know things are looking like a decent start for 2018. They certainly can't have every year have both a 3D Mario and Zelda come out. The initial signs of third party AAA options are starting to look good too. Bethesda is going to have three games coming out in the next ~ 6 months on the Switch, who honestly saw that one coming? And who knows, we have a Direct dropping in a couple days about AC mobile. They announced that it will only cover the mobile game, but it's supposed to hook into whatever the next console AC game is. That's a good sign that Switch AC should be on the horizon as well. Certainly qualifies as a big tent pole game that could be dropping in '18.

The switch has had such an amazing first year it’ll be hard (impossible?) to top this gen but I think they have a ton of potential to keep the momentum going and steadily churn out content. Enough opporunities for bit titles yet to come - 3D Metroid, new Super Smash Bros, Donkey Kong, New MARIO Kart

Nintendo never lost it for those of us that have been with them all along, but it seems like the general public is being recaptured in the magic many of us have continually enjoyed

If they're gonna keep up this pace, then I expect a new Nintendo Direct sometime soonish. They don't have anything for January at all.

Yeah, 2018 is going to be interesting after the amazing 2017 - here's hoping they have plenty of surprises in store.

I'm sorry but I don't see what was so amazing about 2017 as far as first party output is concerned.

1-2-Switch
Arms
Fire Emblem Warriors
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
Pokken Tournament DX
Splatoon 2
Super Mario Odyssey

Mario and Zelda are/will be top notch. Everything else is just kind of eh or it's been played to death because it's a port.

The question is that after Mario and Xenoblade, what comes next?

The switch will likely go down as the best first-year Nintendo will ever have, but it will be tricky to follow that up; especially if your heavy hitters like Zelda, Mario, and Splatoon have already been thrown in. Still, it will be fun to watch what comes next.

TBH 2018 doesn't look good at the moment. Pokemon/Metroid/SMT are all like 95% definitely 2019.

Can't really gauge it at this point. This time last year the only 2017 switch game we knew about was BOTW. Going into next year we at minimum know about Kirby, Yoshi, and Fire Emblem.

Anything can happen still. I'll stay optimistic.

Arms is pretty awesome and so is Splatoon 2. People seem to like Mario + Rabbids, too.

You're forgetting about Xenoblade 2, which is another huge game. And since the system only came out in March you're talking about only 10 months.

New big Mario and Zelda alone are really good in a single year. Xenoblade on top of that makes it incredible. And then you have all those multiplayer games you listed and assorted other exclusives. Only 2 of the games are ports and both have new content. And only one is really kinda bad (1-2 Switch). How do you see it as not that great from a first party perspective?

Some perspective perhaps? Find stronger first party output in the first 9 months of the life of a system. Also you missed Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Snipperclips.

If you don't see the value in that line-up then obviously the Switch isn't for you.

I'm stoked to see their output next year. It's when 3DS first party projects will likely end outside localizations and we'll finally see their combined "console + portable" output. A solid stream of games is sure to follow!

Smash will probably be the headline holiday title.

next year?
I don't see Smash5 yet. But if you mean a port, I don't see SMash 4 Switch being the main headliner.

For the headliner I speculate:
Pokemon if it makes 2018
or AC (but I think this will be around summer)
or 2D Mario/ Mario Maker (most confident in this tbh)
or Retro's game if it's really ambitious with mass appeal (doubtful if it's a new IP though)

This time last year the only title we were aware was releasing on Switch was Breath of the Wild. So people shouldn't panic yet about their lineup. I think a lineup for Switch's 2nd year could look something like this:

February-Kirby
April- Yoshi
May- Pikmin 4
June- Super Smash Bros. 4.5
July- Animal Crossing Switch
August- Fire Emblem Switch
September- Mario Maker Switch
October- Retro Studios game
November- Bayonetta 3
December- 2D Zelda
February- Pokemon Gen 8

There will be surprises and curveballs but, I could see something like this for the Switch's 2nd year.

Subjectively, I can agree with you, especially if you owned a WiiU. I never picked up the two DX ports, or Splatoon's sequel, simply because I was already burned out on them. However, if you look at from the viewpoint of someone who hasn't played them before, that's a solid first party lineup. For any console's launch, and only 10 months at that. Add in the titles that are still coming in 2017 and the indie titles. Not bad for a company that was bleeding cash and scrambling after the failure of the WiiU. Hopefully they can continue the pace, and we shouldn't see as many old ports brought up in 2018.

I almost certainly think there will be a Mario Party next year...

Also, Is 3DS support winding down in 2018? That could mean even more Switch development than this year?

Side question, but how capably could the joycons do Wii Sports or Wii Sports Resort?

For sure 3DS is done next year. I don't even think anyone but Atlus is releasing a new retail game past January. And I think they're done by summer too.

Cool... there was a lot of whining in 2017 that the 3DS games we got should have been Switch games as is...

Isn't the gyro tech in the Joycons supposed to be way better than even motion plus? Also, the right joycon has that inside-out IR sensor. I always assumed that the reason the Switch screen poked out of the dock was so it could display dots to replicate the Wii sensor bar. Anyone have any real info on this though, aside from me just pulling stuff out of my keister?

They need at least one or two really big hitters (Pikmin & Smash? Animal Crossing?) and one or two new IP's like ARMS.

Yoshi and Kirby are somewhat "filler" releases, they always do well but they don't hype the system.

That's good to hear. As far as what Nintendo actually has planned for 2018, well I don't think we're playing Metroid Prime 4 anytime soon, however, there are still plenty of things Nintendo can produce in 2018 outside of the already confirmed titles. I have a personal wishlist of mine for 2018.

* WarioWare - It's been too long now, and the Switch is perfect for Wario and his Diamond City pals to work their magic. A more return to form after the disappointing Game & Wario would be nice.

* Mario & Luigi - As the 3DS tampers off, more and more of Nintendo's handheld series are migrating to the Switch. One of the next ones should hopefully be Mario & Luigi. Preferably one that isn't as tutorial bloated as Dream Team or as forced and unnecessary as Paper Jam. I'd like for a game that combines the best aspects of all the previous entries, but with a fresh new story and villain.

* Puzzle League - Obscure choice. For the same reasons as Mario & Luigi, but also because, we haven't had a Puzzle League game in forever. The Switch already has plenty of puzzle games, so this would fit right in. Do a small release on the eShop for all I care, I just want my block shuffling goodness back.

* Some form of Free-to-Start game - Nintendo picked up on the Free-to-Play model rather quickly back on the 3DS, employing it in a number of their titles like Rusty's Real Deal Baseball, Nintendo Badge Arcade, Steel Diver: Sub Wars, and Team Kirby Clash Deluxe. Aside from those and their smartphone releases, The Switch should have it's fair share of Free-to-Play/Free-to-Start first party games as well. I personally would love to see Nintendo take a crack at the Free-to-Play action MOBA genre like SMITE or Gigantic. I think they can do something cool with the genre

* More New IPs - I would like to see Nintendo release more new Switch IPs next year compared to this year. They have some of the most imaginative talent in the industry, and with the Switch hardware, they can do some really interesting and unique stuff. I especially want to see what the Rhythm Heaven Team is working on, if they have anything in development at all.

* Pikmin 4 - We've heard it's basically done, but for some reason Nintendo is just sitting on it. If there were anytime to release this game, next year would be the right time.

* Pokemon - Bold prediction I know, but I'm actually hoping Pokemon makes 2018. It's a huge cash cow, and in the case of Nintendo handhelds, a major 3rd party catalyst, so it makes sense for Nintendo and The Pokemon Company to want it on there ASAP. Game Freak was one of the first to get Switch dev kits, and apparently they have a bunch of unused HD models from Sun and Moon they were sitting on, so it looks like Gen 8 could be arriving sooner than we think.

With SMT 5, Pokemon and possibly a Smash bros I am sure 2018 will already be a great year. Some Indies too and JPN titles I didn't even mention.

So far they have done remarkably well last console to pull this output and consistency that at least I enjoyed was the original Xbox.

I mean a sequel to Smash Wii U. So not a from the ground up entry like every other one but also not just an enhanced port.

Man, they've had such a stellar 2017 it's gonna be damned hard to top. Fire Emblem, Kirby, and I can't even imagine what else from them next year, but I'll bet they'll lean more in Indies and third parties.

The nice thing about Nintendo is they seem to announcing shit pretty close to launch mostly these days. Lots of surprises in store I think.

Nintendo are really on to something great with the Switch. I can't wait to see what they have up their sleeve.

People were really worried about droughts at launch, but they've been very consistent so far and I haven't really felt like there's been a time this far where I've wanted something new and fresh for my Switch without there being new releases available.

Sure some people get trough games quicker than me so it might not be the same for everyone, but they've had a pretty consistent stream of great games releasing throughout the year. If they carry on this way then I don't see them having many problems down the road, especially if 3rd parties stay on board.

I think this is a atrong suggestion we will see all the major franchises get a Switch version.

This thing is going to dominate Christmas, (if they can make enough)!
