What's your favorite scene with character dialogue in video games?

Mine is the patched-sock exchange in 999 DS.

Great game— I hope everyone played it.

The worst thing is that I can't even tell anymore where the trolling begins and the genuine weirdness ends.

That first conversation between Shepard and the bad guy in Mass Effect 1. It really made me think about what could be out there.

One of my favorite lines from Bioshock. Ryan's opening monologue in the bathysphere to Rapture is golden as well.

"And just what is it you plan to do to them...?"

"I will burn down this kingdom and from its ashes build for you a new one, a kingdom that is worthy of you. I will show you a world in which your light shall outshine the sun, a world that will know no darkness!

...and you will have no more need of tears."

"Such a world... is it possible?"

"I will not fail you in this."

The dialogue in GTA V is so in your face over the top and trying to be edgy that it's offensive to listen to. In IV I think they got closer to the golden ratio between being funny and having some gravitas, if I'm not laughing at the content of the convo between characters (say in the form of a radioplay via a cardrive) then I'm enjoying the simulation that it is competently presenting.

You'll forgive me if I don't naively devour every scrap of information you toss me. - Raziel to Kain (Soul Reaver 2). Reminiscing just made me sad and wishing for a new game again... the cycle continues :(

love kains opening lines from legacy of kain defiance.

"Given the choice, whether to rule a corrupt and failing empire; or to challenge the fates for another throw - a better throw - against one's destiny... what was a king to do? But does one even truly have a choice? One can only match, move by move, the machinations of fate... and thus defy the tyrannous stars."

The writing and dialogue in Witcher 3 (particularly the DLC expansion) is the best ever, in my opinion.

Anything from BJ in Wolfenstein but in particular:

"Death is at the gates again, howling my name. Can't greet him today, I have a war to win."

Broken Sword has some terrific dialogue...

'I considered climbing the lamp post but it wouldnt shed any light on the affair'

'The inspector looked like a constipated chicken'

'The inspector looked at me like I'd farted at a funeral...'

These are just off the top of my head...

- It was not by my hands that i am once given flash, I was called here by humans, who wish to pay me tribute!

- Tribute!? You steal men souls and make them your slaves!

In all seriousness, pretty much every dialog on SOTN is an insta-classic, cheesy dubbing apart. The Death sequences are pretty awesome, too.

Demon's souls Maiden in black:

Soul of the mind, key to life's ether.
Soul of the lost, withdrawn from it's vessel.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended.
So the world might be mended.

It's hard to narrow down a specific scene, when the first Witcher game was absolutely chalk full of amazing conversations. Probably the best general dialogue I've ever seen in a game.

As much shit as the game gets for its writing and plot, I really enjoy Orphan's monologue at the end of Final Fantasy XIII.

A haven, yea - Yet it must fall ere we be saved.
Too frail a shell and humans should not thrive; Too stout a shell...and they would not die.
Slaughter and salvation! Two irreconcilable focuses we bore, yet bound were we in a Cocoon prison, impervious to our power.

And so we thank you for granting us our longed-for birth.

We are The Abandoned One - born, but now to die.
Our name...is Orphan. By our hand, the world shall know redemption.

Maiden Astraea

This is our home.
We have done no harm to you.
Dear God, have mercy.
Is not your abandonment of us punishment enough?
How long must we weather this cruel fate?
Cruel Lord… What more can you possibly take from us?
Dear Lord… You are too cruel.
You have abandoned us, is that not punishment enough?

The entire car ride in GTAV where Michael is calling Trevor a hipster.

On second thought I did enjoy this but only because it vindicated how I thought about the game's characters as a whole.

The writing and dialogue in Witcher 3 (particularly the DLC expansion) is the best ever, in my opinion.

I really enjoyed how the pretense of the aristocrats came through in Blood&Wine.

Great example and I completely agree. What a game. When the 4k update drops for the Xbox One X, I'm going to have to do another play through again I think.

You sir, have great taste. BioShock was such an amazing experience. I think that I've played through the entire campaign three times now. It's easily my top five of all time. Andrew Ryan's opening monologue just sets the tone for the game perfectly.

"The limits of language are the limits of knowledge."

From The Swapper. I loved all the text in that game, but that sentence is burned into my brain.

Honestly, just hearing Liam Neeson's gentle voice in Fallout 3. It's what left a memorable impression for me on that game.

Fallout 4 didn't have nearly the same immersion most likely because the main character is a dingus.
