The rumors were true. The game is targeted for children between the ages 6-12; to be released this fall on multiple platforms.
The game also comes with a selction of action figures which the player can put on a 'portal' and have them recreated in the game.

the publisher of the far-more-adult Call of Duty is targeting ages 6 to 12 with a line of action figures starring more than 30 characters from the game. When the game is running, players can put an action figure on a plastic "portal" or stand and watch the toys appear on their TV, and the toy becomes a moving character in the game for the player to control.
To help create the world of Skyland where Spyro and fellow characters live, Activision has enlisted Hollywood talent, including Shrek character designer Tom Hester, screenwriters Alec Sokolow and Joel Cohen (Toy Story) and composer Hans Zimmer (Inception).
Pricing for individual toys has not been set, but a $70 starter pack will include the video game, three toys, portal and trading cards. Activision plans to release the game for multiple systems as well as computers, handhelds and phones.
Once a character's toy is put on the portal and enters the game, as a player collects gold or levels-up his character or upgrades a weapon, that character's improved abilities are saved in the toy's memory. Players can take their toy to a friend's house and, when the character is transported into that game, all of its attributes are available.

$70 starter pack?

I guess it's never too early to get a job.

Haha! Hans Zimmer is on this as well? It's going to be an epic soundtrack.

VOOK

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.
Please don't be on a Nintendo console, I don't want to have to write this shit up.

Kids are known to buy their own games.

It's only 20$ over normal game price and you get three figures with it ;)

Every time an Activision thread is posted on GAF, a kitten dies.

Kittens are pirates, anyway. Have you ever seen a kitten with a job? Where do they get all that money from?

Activision: We're canceling Guitar Hereo because the days of plastic peripherals that are expensives and work for few games ARE OVERAHH.
*day later*
Activision: Say, remember eye of judgement...lets do that but target it at Children and release our own toy series. We'll also require another one-game plastic peripheral. YEAHHH. Lessons learned.

My question is will the portal be universal (as in will be it one type for Wii, one for PS3 and one for 360, this is my gripe with the previous Activision peripherals, why not just make one and use sone adaptor) and will be required to play.

That said I'm interested at what techincal mechanism they use for the communication aspect of it (it'll probably be bluetooth, like the Wii remotes memory that was and never could be used for anything useful). Given trading cards I'm getting some weird barcode battler vibe from it all.

Sounds like it'd be good for kids if it wasn't $70. The toys I get, but are they really going to appreciate a Hans Zimmer score that much?

When this bombs and they blame the high cost of development as a reason for gutting the studio I will...not know what to say.

I'd like to think the kids kinda appreciate his music in Madagascar and Kungfu Panda...

Yoshichan

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
What the fuck happened to him?

A shitton of plastic to buy with the game? Yep, this sounds like an Activision idea.

WTF is that Spyro design? Are they trying to make him hardcore enough for the 6 to 12 year olds?

I got excited. Thought this might be a return to form for Spyro, but instead it's a horrifying abomination. :(

Those toys might be reborn from melted guitars, skateboards and turntables - the circle of life.

Sad but true .. although I don't mind them melting the guitars, skateboards, and turntables.

My god, that sounds positively horrific. And yet I think it'll be huge with kids. Really don't like that spyro design though.

This isn't like watching your daughter do porn... this is like watching her being gang raped.
I know I'm not Spyro's true parent, but I do feel like a foster parent to the guy, and...well, this is the point where you start making worried calls...

Feel comfortable in the fact that, after Insomniac, you guys made the best Spyro. I'd be worried too hearing about this direction for the series :/ (art direction sounds like the least of it's worries).

I hate to think what an Activision crash game would turn out like.

Spyro is ranking a -100 in the cuteness scale, what 8-12 year olds want to play with him? Old PS1 design still on top.
None, that way they /have/ to buy new toys for better looking characters.

If i was at a computer, id photoshop Koticks head onto Moneybags body.
