Rumor: ‘End of an era’ coming for Call of Duty

Call of duty modern warfare 3 is the last of the old breed?

Why are you guys doing this? These stats aren't hard to find and ABK has been VERY transparent with how much the core COD game makes and how successful it is.

true but " In 2022, Activision Blizzard generated 5.89 billion U.S. dollars of revenues through microtransactions and downloadable content, subscriptions, licensing royalties from our products and franchises, and other miscellaneous revenues. Gaming product sales only accounted for a third of company revenues during the measured period."...I'm assuming by attempting to the get the game is as many peoples hands as possible, probably in large part to do with MS cloud push, they think by removing that initial paywall they can garner an average of more than 60 (70) dollars per user.

Not sure why people are jumping to OTT conclusions. Maybe it just means they are going to kill off Captain Price or something.

Also I saw that Ghost guy's video tweet where he just repeats the same thing three times. What a fucking tool lol.

here we go! going full gaas means they can drop a studio or 2, consolidate, saving a lot of money. dollar for dollar it’s cheaper for them to make more skin packs than a full production single player. just think about all the overhead of a full production vs making skin packs lol. the amount of money people spend buying skin packs and season passes makes this a smart move on their part. kinda sucks tho. but hey, yall want fweee games.

So no more campaigns? That sucks because while they are simple there really isn’t anyone else in the industry offering regular movie-blockbuster style fps campaigns like they do. They can be fun to experience once or twice over a few hours and I quite liked their experimentation with a little more open-ended mission design for some missions in Modern Warfare 2. Would’ve liked to see that done better in the future.

But much of the COD universe is very much a live-service at this point with Warzone and DMZ. Adding traditional multiplayer to the live-service model and disconnecting it from the yearly release model is a natural progression.

Isn’t Treyarch already working on next years installment. I kind of hope they get away from paid yearly expansions.

Nah I don't buy it. Why would they kill the golden goose when sales are still through the roof? MP doesn't need to be free because Warzone/DMZ is free and already has access to all of the micro transactions. They also are a gateway drug to the real meat in the $70 package. Absolutely no way this happens now. Maybe if Modern Warfare 3 bombs and is the worst selling modern CoD they'd start to consider it.

From the player standpoint, yearly releases does have some benefits. If this year's game is Vanguard then there's nothing stopping you from returning to MW2019 or Cold War because all the old games stay up and retain a playerbase. Sorry but it doesn't add up to me, and when Microsoft takes over I bet they're going to want the premium titles still to pump up Game Pass (not that they can impact that decision now).

Perhaps related to the "small" divestiture that MS offered CMA?

In either case - quite honestly don't care... haven't played it in years anyway...

Buying COD for the campaign is like watching porn for the story.

On a more serious note, with Warzone and all the microtransactions, this would be a logical next step
Most new CODs always felt like DLC anyway.

End of single player campaigns confirmed.

That would mean the end of the series for me. Not buying it without a SP campaign.

Sounds about right for MS. Dog brain decision after dog brain decision.

They are going to fuck this franchise harder than Activision ever did.

First they'll kill off the SP campaign, then they'll port it to every single platform imaginable - Downgrading the fuck out of it for weak ass platforms like Switch.

Enjoy
Yeah this would actually save me a lot of money but I find it hard to see them not letting Treyarc do another cold war 2 campaign or whatever they call it.

I don’t play CoD so I don’t really care, it’ll be interesting to see what happens with the franchise if this is indeed true though.

Ranting about something you claim MS has done to a franchise they don’t own and have no control over…

Is everything OK with you?

The multiplayer has to go gaas to survive. Its just not gonna work asking people to buy a copy every year, splitting the user base etc. You need it to be free to play and consistent.

Just please drop campaigns every couple of years and charge 30 pounds for them or day one on game pass, because personally that's what I play cod for. Cheesy summer blockbuster campaigns that are like 6 to 8 hours long.

I could see Call of Duty going purely free to play, while in a few years release the new franchise IP for the yearly war themed shooter [not called Call of Duty] to avoid its obligations. 🤔

I wonder if xdefiant is putting some pressure on them.

Xdefiant is yet to show if it can be a worthy cod competitor as it hasn't released yet. But it got alot of good impressions from people in the cod community during the betas. It's free to play as well.

It doesn’t even have a release date or tdm mode

That's insane and will NOT happen. There's no basis for this being a thing. On paper I understand why a pencil pusher will think this is the best way to go. But Activision has already shown us the best way for Call of Duty to be treated. That's if you're trying to get the maximum out of the IP.

If Microsoft wanted to go with a one game every 3 year Call of Duty approach, that I could understand tremendously and would think that would be the best thing for the product going forward. But going 100% free to play is not a good look at all. It's a horrible idea!

It be nice to get back to having Infinite Ward just handling the main COD of war games every 3 years or so with then one of the other teams just handling the online PVP every year.
I so hope we then have the likes of Raven getting back to making their own IP again; Love to see a remake or sequel to Singularity from them

cold war was the last fun cod game let trey make something without being interrupted by inferior studios and having to clean the mess up or dealing with crunch time bs

I think most of the COD games are good to decent, but I only really enjoy the IW games for single player (did love Raven's Future warfare mind ) and I just think it be nice for the series to get back to having a major COD single player game every 3 or so years and have the other teams handle other stuff when they become part of the XBox family and will have In-House funding

That's what I like to see myself. I love to see Raven get back to making their own style of games

You haven't played Infinite Warfare's campaign? It's easily one of the best single player story campaigns in recent years, and not just for CoD standards either.

I think this plan will change.

Once the ABK acquisition closes, it will benefit Microsoft to have a yearly release of COD. This will give them an opportunity to market COD with Xbox's branding every year.

"End of an era"......hmm.....sounds like either someone is going to make a game that outdoes COD, or someone is speculating that MS buying Activision will end COD.

I mean, it's a pretty vague post. Could mean anything, or it could mean nothing.

They can still charge annually for updates. COD hasn't needed to be a new game every year for a very long time. Just call it "Call of Duty" and have in encompass everything.

Kinda sad. I enjoyed COD campaigns.
If it's anything like Halo MCC or Infinite, then you would still get new campaigns in the old schedule. Probably there would be three mainline free to play Call of Duty multiplayer games and all yearly "single player campaigns" will be released as expansions that you pay for. Makes sense, they won't have to redo the multiplayer every year while churning out new single player campaigns.

End of an (Reset)Era

This is how i read the title at first. Now i am disappointed.

It is quite obvious that CoD will eventually develop into something even more predatory. Gotta milk the children‘s parents credit cards after all.

do not tempt fate do not contrain Wonder Woman's thighs do not do not
Call of Duty is now just WarZone, MP and DMZ.

The campaigns are standalone titles that release as needed.
