The Last of Us Part II Remastered Announced + Trailer. Release Slated for January 2024

NaughtyDog Defense Force
Horizon Zero Dawn sold 20 million copies, they were probably expecting to perform better than that game in a much short period of time, also TLOU2 got discounted after a few month of released. There is really no point having a remake of a 3 year old game other than to take back the losses. TLOU1 on PC was a flop too due to bugs and performance issues.
Most of Sony's PS4 titles were discounted after a month or two so that doesn't prove anything.

You completely ignored the remasters and re-releases because it goes against your point. Even Spider-Man 2018 was remastered. Developers remaster games because it generates more revenue, not because a game underperformed. And no, the PC version didn't flop. Made 15m in about the first month, cost less than that to port.

It took more than 5 years for Horizon and Last of Us to sell over 20 million and probably nearly half of those copies were bundled for years.

You should look up how these games are sold because it's clear you haven't been paying attention. lol

So if I own the game digitally, I can't upgrade? Wut? I did notice it didn't mention the digital version in the press release but I didn't think it needed mentioned, I thought it was a given that the digital version would be eligible for the $10 upgrade....

We get the chance to vote with our wallets every time and with the options we have for The Last of Us Part II Remastered, these options are perfect for everyone. If you don't want to spend, the native PS4 version still looks incredible and will play beautifully on a PS5 in 60FPS, but if you do fancy paying for a version that gives us more and will look even better, then for the price of a coffee and a doughnut, you can do so...

fact: reminding me that just a fucking coffee & doughnut cost $10 now isn't in any way a positive, dude...

Its always amazing how insecure game studios are. They must have legions of employees whose only job is to scour the internet for bad news, so they can respond on twitter with a tear dripping down their face. Every game will have their share of internet fans liking or hating the game or business strategy. No need for tweets.

It's got to a point ND even calls out gamers to put up or shut up about spending your own money.

I think whats happened is LOU2 didn't sell as well as expected. If it did, Sony would be bragging like how LOU1 sold a ton. Now, to keep sales going LOU2 remastered is coming soon and possibly their last chance to milk it for sales, so they are nervous.

Uh, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Naughty Dog World... you know, a fan site?

As I stated earlier, Neil already said it was profitable day one and it was extremely successful.

Sony didn't brag "a ton" about how many copies The Last of Us sold.

They announced it sold 3.4 million copies in 3 weeks.
They announced it sold over 7 million after 1 year.
They announced it sold over 17 million in 2018.
They announced the series sold over 37 million copies in 2022.

1.3 million was cited in a Forbes article, 8 million during a stream via Sony employee, and over 20 million by Zhuge.

People believe just because they don't "brag" about sales, that means it sold below expectations. People believed that right before the 10m copies sold were announced and even then people tried to discredit it.

Last of Us Part II was 14th best sellers list across Europe in 2023 in the first half.

Nothing indicated that "they're nervous."

I thought it was strange that the PlayStation 4 version never officially dropped below $39.99 a year ago and that's still the price on the PlayStation store.

Something tells me that they never dropped it below $39.99 because they were going to release the PS5 version at a higher price point.

We very well may see a full priced game.
Bro I got the last of us part II for $19 on PSN on november 2021, they didnt drop the price but they offered discounts plenty of times.

I never said they didn't discount the price. I know they discounted the price a lot. I'm talking about when the game is not discounted. It's officially still $39.99

Idk why everyone complains about Abby who I honestly ended up liking more than Ellie's depressing lesbian ass in this game, and not the little girl that is concerned about being trans in the middle of the FUCKING END OF THE WORLD!

Loving that the $10 upgrade path was confirmed. Time to stalk every sale between now and launch for cheaper copy of PS4 version. I skipped it at the end of last generation cause a PS5 version was obviously coming eventually. And was in no rush thanks to the leaks.

Usual suspects trying to convince others that they shouldn't play the game. The reasoning changes month to month but crucially, the accounts/posters are always the same.

PS' success with this ip is really painful to some.

Hope they heavily bundle this SKU with the new PS5.

For whatever reason the Naughty Dog games don't ever get bundled even half as much as other Sony titles.

Not exactly a game for kids TBH, most violent I've played.
Fair point. Just a shame they miss out on free "Sales" like others.

I wonder how it works with the upgrade? Does that count as a sale in the charts?

I presume it does? I suppose Spiderman Remastered is the best comparison. Does anyone know if purchases via the upgrade path counted for that as a sale?

Part 1 is fully fixed on PC now so don't really see the same issues happening again.
Yea, I think double dipping is the limit for me. Had PS3 version and PS4 remastered for TLOU1. I can't really justify buying on PC now. However, I have not had the chance to double dip on TLOU2. So PC would be the preferred move.

Only $10 for the upgrade? I'm definitely in. Loved this game.

TGO

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Druckmann, TLOU, Naughty Dog live rent free in many heads
Druckmann is definitely living Rent Free on the throne of Naughty Dog.
He had a 18 year plan that required very little effort on his part before he retires
But still it's only $10

The effort is obvious.....

This was a new hire project getting them used to their toolsets and development flow before bringing them over to the new game team he's been working on.

Fair enough but why not give those new hires with an acceptable challenge and working experience of making the graphics atleast on par with the original e3 trailer? No excuses for not delivering that on the damn ps5. I mean this is the bare minimum effort of increasing res and af which was done by xbox series x for free via bc.

There will always be a goalpost.

They already did a free update on the PS4 version.

They're doing such a terrible job with those comparison shots. How about instead of perfect looking cutscene close-ups pick a place where the ps4 game has clear LOD issues, like next to the supermarket in ch1 or on the island. That I'd love to see.

No goalpost buddy just relax with the defense force mindset and think impartially this is the bare minimum of remaster treatment that is is being charged, while the xbox had this shit for free via bc. If they are going to charge us the least they can do is make the graphics up to the level that they tried to sell as realtime on the ps4 at e3. On the tlou1 remaster on the ps4 they used cutscene models in gameplay yet they arent even doing that for this one, they already have the assets and a mature pipeline this isn't some monumental endeavor here.

Im a big Naughty Dog fan but they are really going backwards this gen and Im sorry if I'm not impressed by a remaster effort that turns the resolution slider to 4k and calls it a day and tries to play it off as a significant development effort.

No defense here, I made a declarative statement. There will always be a goalpost.

I don't understand the hate and negativity. It's a PS5 version of the game, people want a PS5 version! ND want to differentiate it from the PS4 version, what the fuck else do you want them to call it? It is by definition a remaster. It's $10.

Sony want the two games to exist in current gen because they are pushing the show. Naughty Dog also said it was also the starting point for new developers they have to use their tools. I'd hardly call this an unnecessary cash grab. I don't remember such negativity when GOT released their 'director's cut', the upgrade path was more if I remember, but I guess because they didn't a call it a remaster, it's ok.

Not seeing much difference tbh, but I own the game digitally and will playthrough again for £10. Is the performance mode getting a res bump too? I was pretty happy with the uncharted 4 ps5 version so if it's at least that good I'm happy.

Setting new records for how quickly a game is remastered isn't really what I expected from Sony this gen. Soon they'll be releasing a game and then announcing the remaster a month later!
You're completely missing the point of why this exists. It's a PS5 version of the game, are you upset because they used the word 'remaster' instead of just putting it in a PS5 cover? It has various performance modes, VRR, resolution bump, increased textures and level of detail distances and animation sampling just to name a few things plus other features and new game mode/DLC. How is that not a remaster? It's $10 dude for ppl who want a PS5 version for their PS5. The performance modes themselves are worth it to some ppl, if you don't like it, don't buy it. Quit your bitchin.

You get games that have upgraded assets universally for free?

Since when?
Gears 5
Cyberpunk
Control (sort of a mod, done by the games developer)
Witcher 3
Doom Eternal
Minecraft
No Man's Sky
Skyrim
Metro Exodus

I don't think new content should be free but there are plenty of games that have offered substantial graphical upgrades for no cost.
