...than Shadows of Chernobyl, which is almost unplayable without mods.

At release, yes, but that's just not true with the fully patched up game. Vanilla STALKER looks and plays just fine, it's just that most people aren't used to its rough edges anymore. The mods noticably improve the game (provided you disable some changes), but they're not essential.

Why did this happen? I thought the combination of a long-tail sales and low development costs could keep GSC going for a long time. Now I'm afraid for CD Projekt.

The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series has a big enough audience that we could fund development of the sequel. You see what you pirates have done?!

Worst gaming news I've heard ever. This is the equivalent of HL3 being cancelled for me.

I don't understand this at all:

one of the ukranian law enforcement structure was interested in taking control over GSC (translation - they wanted to capture the company and have their money/control their direction).

?!

LATEST UPDATE: GSC have got back to me with “Sorry, no comments at this point.” That does not sound promising.

SECOND UPDATE: The denial tweet has now been deleted. Hmm. Still trying to get confirmation on this, but it’s looking like GSC is down. GSC’s Dmitri Bourkovski has just tweeted “Not PR. GSC closed.”

FIRST UPDATE: GSC deny the report on their twitter here. We’ve contacted them for a comment.

ORIGINAL: According to this report from Ukrainian news site UkraNews, GSC has been shut down by owner Sergei Grigorovich. The closure was apparently announced to the workforce earlier today. The autotranslation is messy, so if anyone can explain the sixth paragraph – which tries to speculate on what was going on – accurately, that would be great.

That sucks. I actually really hated Stalker, but the parts that I didn't hate were fantastic, and really not like anything else out there.

Poland isn't *quite* the Ukraine.

Edit: Actually, thinking a bit further: Cheap dev costs are wonderful for game development, but would this be the sort of risk that comes with those benefits?

Awful news coming out of nowhere, they had a clothing line and everything

Corrupt officials trying to get in on the money makes me mad as hell

Hope they can at least make a new studio and develop S.C.A.V.E.N.G.E.R.

Sigh, I was actually kinda looking forward to the live-action adaptation and STALKER 2 was day one... Here is hoping that either 4A or CD Project RED picks them up.

You shouldn't, Ukraine=/=Poland

The fuck? I don't think I've ever heard of a developer being shut down because of political corruption. Is Ukraine bad for this sort of thing, EastEurGAF?

I would say so, in my opinion, although they kinda get many things better than Russia, politically, the mentality is not that much different though. The Baltics and Poland is much more different though, as being more European, that shit wouldn't fly at all or easily there.

I died inside, this is just horrible news...

STALKER really was one of a kind. I hope some of the team can get something going in the aftermath.

Hope Bethesda buys the rights, they are great on atmosphere and PC bugs. Be like old times, waiting on mods.
