I was expecting more for Uncharted 3, disappointing.

It basically sold as much as U2 ( since it was released at the beginning of the month ).

Genuinely don't see why AC2 is seen as better than AC1. I'm 3 hours in (after completing 1) and it seems the same to me.

Ass is like a yearly blockbuster super hero movie. It works well with the casual market, I guess they really like their big-budget, movie-like, series.
And the marketing is good, they associate the game with sports stars and we know sports games are the most casual friendly genre (and they are released yearly too).

COD is something we have never seen before. i remember when some people already claimed the series is going to fail when the old people of infinity ward left them after mw2. but the series became bigger and bigger... and i'm really curious about next years outcome.

Launching the CoD Elite subscription service was one of the smartest things Activision has done IMO. It's going to keep that userbase "locked in", downloading every map pack and playing CoD all year round right up until the sequel. When Black Ops 2 (or whatever) comes out next year they'll go "Double XP for Elite members! Earlier unlocks!" etc and everyone lines up at midnight to buy the game and renew their Elite subscription.

I think Elite will be a key part of keeping the CoD franchise relevant/huge.

More to do, likeable character, the cities all had more personality than anything in AC1, the game wasn't trying to be completely overbearing in it story like AC1 was (so many long and mandatory cutscenes with no sense of direction in AC1), generally better pacing.

I dunno what to tell you, it was like night and day for me. Whereas AC1 was a terrible game, AC2 was a great one. I like Brotherhood a little less and Revelations a lot less.

Neither Apple nor Nintendo can afford to go by the razor and blade model, at least not nearly as much as Sony or Microsoft and their multiple divisions.

I think you have a very high idea of Sony pockets. They have a very large activity, lots of divsions but most of them are losing money or very thin on profits, nothing in common with Apple/MS/Nintendo. Sony is the most likely to lose on the game of spending a lot. Microsoft is the most likely to win at that game. nintendo could go either way but they refuse to play that game, which means they will be safe.

I have to admit that I didn't play AC2 up till a few weeks ago (just platinum'd it last week). What started as slight curiosity for the series and mild dislike for Ezio (he was kind of a douche at the start) turned into pure enjoyment for the gameplay and admiration for Ezio. I didn't expect to like the game since the first was a bit boring. The gameplay mechanic is also quite annoying at times (some of the jumps and platforming are frustrating to say the least) but the overall experience was memorable. WTF @ the main plot though.

I can see the extra polish, but the gameplay is the same and so far the story is a typical stupid video game story. I guess the improvements people like are in areas I don't care about.

The core gameplay is the same, you just have more moves/weapons/allies, and you'll find more side missions or activities (hunt for treasures, buy shops, upgrade your home city, solve secret puzzles...). There will also be levels focusing more on platforming, which didn't exist in the first episode.
AC2 basically solved what most people complained about in AC1, aka being repetitive. But I supose that if you only want to go through the story while killing everybody in your path, you won't notice most of the differences.

CoD's popularity is so weird. I loved CoD4, but I honestly don't see how it's retained such widespread appeal. I wonder when that gravy train is gonna end.

Wow, the PS3 did a lot better than I expected. The 360...well....blew them out of the water. And now the Wii sits in 3rd place after obliterating its competition for the 1st few years. It's still nice to see that while they are "cooling off" (relatively speaking) that they're still posting some outstanding numbers.

Where's Skyrim's numbers? I thought some already knew that it was about 500K behind Oblivion's LTD? Give the numbers dangit. Lol

Give it a few more hours and the differences become apparent, particularly in terms of mission structure and combat. If you still can't see the vast difference between the two games after that then I don't know what to say, really.

assassin's creed ii is in tutorial mode for like, 3-5 hours. and then it keeps teaching you new things anyway. the real meat of the game is pretty great though, with one huge surprise in particular that i loved.

Good numbers all around really. XBOX sales definitely outstanding, but the other wasn't expecting PS3 to do a unit over 700k, so the number they actually posted is very strong.

Strong performance for Uncharted 3 too. And obviously Call Of Duty is a monster.

700k for Uncharted? Pretty disappointing for such a hyped up series. Microsoft and Nintendo has second tier franshises that easily sells over a million in their first month.

THE WORDS! They'll drift away without the _!

Whilst i agree it is a disappointing result, what second tier franchises sell 1m first month?

Although I don't consider Uncharted to be second tier.

the 3DS will truly be unstoppable when the next Pokemon comes out, we all know it

not so weird when you consider how much the power of unlockables and XP and frantic online levelling up can appeal to the moronic masses

CoD pulled a WoW, pure and simple. Total mass market appeal in one single strike and boom, you've got your billion cash cow

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
- Money and shops.
- More compelling story.
- Better sidequests.
- Improved combat.

One aspect that needs to return for AC3 is the player-driven approach to assassinations. That's the one element that I sorely miss from the original game.

From what I've seen, people really like the series in general. The look, the fell, they liked Altair too. Plus, during the 2 years wait guess expectations and hopes were built.

At the same time, I wonder if it's a combination of people liking AC and/or people liking Ezio. For as much as many around here are like "ugh Ezio sucks, Ezio this, Ezio that", in general people really liked Ezio. After ACII, with Brotherhood and Revelations; many had this "tradition" in their Facebooks to change their name to [You name here] Auditore da Firenze; or the profile pictures with Ezio's covered face; and so on.

First NPDs:
AC: 1.3 million (2007)
ACII: 1.2 million (2009)
ACB: 1.1 million (2010)
ACR: 1.2 million (2011)

Honestly outside of neogaf I don't know anyone who cares about the Desmond side of the story even 5% as much as the Ezio story. In 2/brotherhood my girlfriend would get mad every time she was pushed back into Desmond's body. AC:R might be her favorite game in the series so far just because the desmond parts are so tiny.

What's hard to believe is people stuck with the series after AC1. AC2 is of course leaps and bounds better, but man I don't know how people even gave it a shot after 1. Had they started with 2 as the first game I'd at least understand why the series became popular. But that series as a whole is the most confusing thing to me this generation. It's eye candy with very shallow gameplay.

Very good eye candy though. The settings are everything to me in AC. The first one got me on Templars and the Holy Land. The second one on the Renaissance. I was a bit sceptical about Brotherhood but the amount of stuff they made for that game made it well worth the $60. I haven't played Revelations yet but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be floored by the sheer amount of stuff they made for that game too.

I never cared for Ezio. In terms of characters I always preferred Altaïr, but what it all comes down to is the worlds the people at Ubisoft create.
