Sad reality for AMD, the 7950/70 will be on the level of the current GTX 580's
Can you wait that long? I'm getting antsy here. The 7970 will be a nice step up from my 4890
PCI-E GPU port can provide maximum of 75W.
6pin connector adds 75W, 8pin connector adds 150W.
On the pics is 2x 6pin i think.
Sure, I haven't played Witcher 2 yet because I want a better card.. but most of all because I haven't finished the first game. 4890 puts up a decent fight against most games on High (ie. not max but still pretty good looking) so I'm not a hurry, there aren't any must play titles out there for me right now.Can you wait that long? wish I had waited to get 7970 in xfire. i got a 6950 xfire in one computer, 570 sli in another and I feel like I still need more power. I want to play Crysis at 4x4 SSAA
I feel your pain. 560ti SLI in one, and 5850 Crossfire in another. Will probably pick up two 7970s. Tried recently to get a 590 Classified Hydro Copper, but the deal fell through. Crossfire headaches won't be as big of a deal, because when I have to disable one, I'll still have a 7970.wish I had waited to get 7970 in xfire. i got a 6950 xfire in one computer, 570 sli in another and I feel like I still need more power. I think they're 8 pin actually, two of the wires are black.PCI-E GPU port can provide maximum of 75W.

I'm going to guess the high end component will be 20% faster than the GTX 580.
Sorry, I meant a 6+2 pin and a 6pin. The one on the right clearly has a black wire on the left of the top row. Basically, between the two sets of yellow cables.Maybe bottom row of cables is black, top one is yellow.
Hyperbole doesn't help you get your point across. Both sides have tons of driver issues, as well as tons of success. The only place where AMD is clearly lagging behind is in crossfire support. Definitely quite a bit slower to get profiles out there than Nvidia.Regardless of this the %1000 more driver issues will make it not worth it lol.
I played W2 with mine and it ran pretty well, actually. Takes some tweaking of course, but I got a fairly steady frame rate and it looked stunning regardless (I may have sacrificed a few frames for more eye candy. Ahem). I think I'm just going to buy Battlefield 3 right now, see how it runs. If I can get it to at least a stable thirty without having to go lower than medium I'll wait for the 7xxx.Sure, I haven't played Witcher 2 yet because I want a better card.. but most of all because I haven't finished the first game. 4890 puts up a decent fight against most games on High (ie. not max but still pretty good looking) so I'm not a hurry, there aren't any must play titles out there for me right now.
D'aw, that's adorable and a hundred times better than 'dog's bollocks'. Vocabulary +1. Thank you, Communist Superman.Of course, going to wait and see if they actually pan out to be the cat's pajamas
In semi related news AMD finally has custom application profiles. Better late then never I guess.

Confirmed its one 8 and one 6 pin. But then again, this is an ES (Engineering Sample) and Cayman ES (6970) also had the same configuration. In short, we cant guess the TDP based on that pic alone. On the pics is 2x 6pin i think.

I know, and I am thinking about swapping out my SLI GTX 480's for 2 Classified GTX 580's
This changes *everything*. Oh happy day!In semi related news AMD finally has custom application profiles. Better late then never I guess.

Yeah, dual 580s are rockin' sweet. Just don't get the classifieds unless you get either A)The Hydro Coppers, or B) Are putting them under LN2 for a test bench. Kind of a waste otherwise, most of the features on those guys are aimed at benchers, not gamers. The air coolers on those suckers are crazy loud with the stock OC, and get mind numbingly loud with more volts.Do it.
Enjoy destroying every game with the 580s. Feelsgood. Not to mention your PC won't be a furnace compared to the 480s. Two 580s you won't pay attention to other cards with the performance you'll get. By the time you want to upgrade card makers should be on the non reference designs for the 680. Even then with SLI 580s it's more of a "want" to upgrade rather than a need to. Do it!
On topic: I'm excited to see the benches for these. Competition is a good thing. I want to see just how much better the 7970 is than the 580s.

Going to stick them in my Arc Mini, going under water.
Of course, going to wait and see if they actually pan out to be the cat's pajamas.

Suppose I'll be upgrading from a 4850 to a 7850 sometime late March?

With some quasi-precise measurements, the die area comes up rather large at 432,6 sq.mm -- a notch higher than R600:
hmmm.... still want to see what the green team offers, it will give me enough time to buy the 30inch monitor. not sure GTX580s 1.5gb can handle BF3 and other stuff fully maxed out.
My OC'd single GTX 570 handles BF3 @ 1080p, Ultra everything, 4x MSAA at 60+ FPS, lowest I've seen it go during multiplayer is 48~.
try it at 2560x1600, the res I bet that 30" monitor is.
I'd just wait for 79xx in that case. Should handle BF3 at that res with 4x, maybe 8x MSAA no problem. Buying a GTX 580 at this point in time is a waste.

All I know is, I'm excited about Laptop GPUs. I can't wait to see the 7870m variant.
I wouldnt call it a waste with kepler still months away.
Will that be a die shrunk 6950m too?
So buying a $450-500 videocard when another one that's about to be released which will be the same price or cheaper and probably offer 50-80% better performance isn't a waste? Uh... alright.
