Digital Foundry VS Bethesda: PS3 Skyrim is still shit

They are kind of between a rock and a hard place with PS3 Skyrim, though. Trying to cram a failbryo engine game loaded up with content far beyond its breaking point into a custom architecture like the PS3 is just asking for trouble.

That wouldn't have been an issue if the engine was actually new like they originally claimed it was.

Skimming through the last couple of pages, seems people are overreacting a bit. I put in 125ish hours on the ps3, got the platinum trophy(whatever that's worth) and my save file is currently at a whopping 13mb. Oh and I didn't change any settings or reinstall it either.

Shit I can't do:
-Fast travel more than a couple of times in succession. This brings the game down to a crawl.
-Ride a horse, this results in aforementioned slow down followed by the eventual crash

Everything else works fine, up to a Bethesda standard. I suppose that needs further explanation; the game will crash every now and again and saving often is still recommended due to bugs. These are potentially quest breaking, personally I had to deal with one and by deal with it I mean I reloaded to a save half an hour earlier. But these problems aren't limited to Skyrim or a particular platform or even this gen of hardware, they've been around for as long as I can remember.

What the fuck am I reading

i agree. as with fo3 goty, & fo:nv, i got 100+ hours out of the game. but, that's only because i played all 3 games within the confines of the 'bethesda standard': i defragged the hd before installing. i turned off auto-saving. i played in limited sessions. i moved about the game world slowly, particularly after fast traveling, to allow for loading. not to mention, i passed on all kinds of stuff, such as, i never used magic, & i didn't unlock the dragons until towards the end, when i was ready to complete the main quest & call it a day...

But these problems aren't limited to Skyrim or a particular platform or even this gen of hardware, they've been around for as long as I can remember...

i disagree. there're imperfect games, & then there's the 'bethesda standard'. there're no other games i've played this gen that i've had to accommodate for in any way, shape, or form similar to the way i've had to accommodate for bethesda games. none. yes, they're fun. but only if you're willing to accommodate for the 'bethesda standard' - that, & if you're just plain lucky :) ...

attempting to compare the inherent problems with these games to any others is nonsense. the 'bethesda standard', as it's existed on the ps3 this gen, is in a zone of it's own...

There will never be a recall... that's a pipe dream. And they wont admit they knowingly misled customers. They won't even come close to that.

They are in 100% damage control mode... they'll only address the things they're forced to. And even then it will be by downplaying complaints/issues.

Stalling and downplaying. That's it. You will not get an apology or anything of the sort. And we probably won't get a real fix either.

Why should they? They got their money, the industry gave them a pass (awards), and now they just have to make their DLC.

DLC that will no doubt fuck the PS3 version ever worse. And they'll still release it, count their money, and not give a fuck how bad it breaks an already broken PS3 version. The only thing we'll get from this company is insult to injury. It was their last big game on PS3 and they got their money. So fuck you and everyone else. See you next gen suckers!

I agree 100%, there is no more honor in this business, not even at the top of the gaming industry. What about Fallout 4, isn't that due out later this year? You'd think a company like Bethesda would have more class.

I'm happy I got the game for PC, but sad for all those PS3 gamers out there.

No it probably would've been even worse because of all the problems inherent with building a game using a new engine for the first time. Mass Effect would be my top example of this. Technically that game is a clusterfuck.

The game can frequently hit 0fps, so I really doubt that it could get worse.

Mass Effect is Unreal Engine 3...Bethesda still refuses to hire decent console coders, so I still wouldn't have a lot of faith even if the engine was actually brand new.

Yeah and it was a new engine that Bioware didn't have much experience with and it showed. I can't be the only person who remembers how technically bad Mass Effect was.

How do you know they don't have "decent" programmers?

The game can frequently hit 0fps, so I really doubt that it could get worse.

That's true. But I think it's more likely that they can fix an engine they have experience with than to create a bug free game on a completely new engine. If QA is the problem its not going to be solved by a new engine anyway.

There are a lot of the same bugs that showed up in previous games though (especially this big PS3 performance bug), so some of that may be due to limitations of the engine. But I would agree that QA seems to be the biggest problem.

The other 256MB of XDRAM can still be used for other things rather than just graphics. Bethesda simply just were too incompetent to properly utilize it (especially ironic since the previous version of Gamebryo still functions better than their "brand new" Creation engine), and that shouldn't be happening in 2011.

Agreed. Incompetence is the issue here. The PC version had RAM access issues , and homebrew software increased the fps performance by 40%. I swear if this continues, we are heading toward another industry crash. Sony, MS, and Nintendo licensing should protect consumers from poorly engineer software pieces of shit like Skyrim. This was what saved the industry and made consumer confident in buying hardware/software again. The NES era is now long gone, and those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. Now licensing fees are so lucrative, that hardware manufacturers are willing to look the other way. . . . Not to mention Sony also get royalties for every blu-ray sold in addition. Corruption. There has been more blatant disregard for gamers this year than I can remember in a long time. From lies about pre-order bonuses for BF3, and Saints Row 3, to broken Skyrim and SF4 arcade edition.

There were already over 10 games (with the first releasing in 2006) running on UE3 by the time Mass Effect (2007) came out. I'm not well-versed on the several versions of Unreal Engine, but I have a hard time believing that the transition from 2/2.5 to 3 was so drastically different that no one knew how to properly use it.

How do I know? Well, let us examine the amount of times they've released a properly working game that had good QA and a relatively low number of bugs... oh. Not to mention somehow breaking resistances and making magical backwards-flying dragons in their last update, and basically forgetting to implement optimization in the PC version.

For all any of us know, Bethesda may have the best coders in the business. But the buck doesn't stop with them, it stops with their Managers and dept heads. None of us know whose really at fault here. Perhaps their QA is shit. Perhaps they have a communication problem at Bethesda. Perhaps there are ego problems. All of these things can factor in. We can't really lay the blame at the coders door without knowing what goes on internally at Bethesda. People usually do what they're told, and if their instructions mean they have to take short cuts, then that's what they're going to have to do.

As rohlfinator pointed out, this isn't a new problem for Bethesda on the PS3. It's not one of those bugs that just comes out of nowhere after a game is released. This same issue is in Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Both of those are still broken. They've had more than enough time to address this issue, but instead of doing that they just continue to release games that have the same exact problem.

So is the PS3 version not getting anymore patches? Just curious where things are seeing as we're into 2012 now.....any new info from Bethesda on patches?

Bethesda has been radio silent on the issue, so who knows. Guess they're too busy collecting their GOTY awards.

Makes me sad....i really want to play this game, and would go out tomorrow and get it if the game was patched to get rid of this slowdown problem. Guess i'll just keep watching and waiting....

Good question, Mine is still in the wrapper, and I've stuck with WKC II until I get the "all-clear" I've been waiting to hear.

Yea I posted that a few days ago a few posts up, they were just answering people who asked them where the patch is a couple days ago.

Their blog hasn't been updated with any news since december I think.
They got your money, why the fuck should they care any more?

They got my money too.

I like how they only update about random mods and youtube videos on their blog :lol

I wonder if Bethesda has ever tweeted about the mod that IMPROVED PERFORMANCE OF THEIR OWN FUCKING GAME BY 40% ?

nope... show me a Tweet from dcdeacon saying that they are working on a patch for ps3..? I have that guy followed on twitter.. he talks about soccer, weekends, prizes, lightbulbs (halogen)... not about patches..

Nah he did update on Jan 6, saw it just now, they don't have any news about it. Would be nice if they post it on their blog instead of having people ask them everyday on their twitter.

@bullsworld CK, updates, etc all still in the works. No new info or details to share. I promise I will let folks know as soon as I do.

It was fine for 90% of the people who installed it. The other 10% had issues with scripts running late or not at all.

Did they not fix those? I remember reading everyone using a variation of it or something in the mod thread I think, I'm not sure since I don't have the PC version.

@DcDeacon any news on this months patches etc.?

I just think NBtoaster is trying way to hard to back up Bethesda here. Pretty much daily tweets.. pfffttt..

yup.

the first version of the mod screwed up a few things but they have updated it to fix alot of those problems.

Maybe bethesda will look at that mod and release there own version of it as a patch on PC? Maybe even consoles.

Modders also made a mod that lets the PC version access more then 4 GB of RAM then a few weeks later Bethesda released a patch that did the same thing so its not unexpected.

True. This has more to do with bad management than with bad coding. Their managers wanted the game out on PS3 toghether with the other versions, no matter what. If this means releasing a broken (maybe unfixable?) game, who cares, as long as the shareholders are happy. And the shareholders will be happy, since the people bought the PS3 version anyway.
Same goes for their QA staff. It's impossible to seriously debug a game as big as Skyrim, they don't have the time nor the money to do so, and the patching process on consoles takes forever so they can't even release a lot of patches post-release. And there's no reason to do so anyway, because people aren't paying a monthly fee for their game, so they won't waste money on it, unless it's REALLY necessary (there's something that'll hurt sales).

PS3 slim 120GB
7600+ KB saves
32+ hours

I have gotten 0 fps quite a few times throughout the entire game wither or not I was fighting a dragon or walking down a street. I think I reached 0 fps when buying/selling items.

Yes, and obviously they didn't have time/money to develop a new engine specifically for the PS3. They had to use the same engine (and they lied about that) because otherwise it would've been impossible to meet their deadlines.

I'm not trying to justify them, but I think that the root of the problem is in the fact that their games are too big and ambitious for a standard AAA multiplatform dev cycle.
