So this is one of the rare Sundays that I may not have to go into work, and I feel like watching a movie. Any good superhero movies you guys suggest? I watched Thor a few weeks ago - thought it was pretty good. I've also enjoyed most of the X-Men movies. I was thinking Captain America? Is that any good? What about Fantastic Four?

Captain America
Sin City
Blade 1 & 2
Unbreakable
Super
Defendor
Crows Zero Episode I & II *dvd only on netflix :( *
Tamara Drewe
Griff the invisible

oh and not a comic book movie but Some Guy Who Kills People is pretty enjoyable as well could easily be a graphic novel.

im assuming you've seen the heavy hitters like Iron Man and Batman

Thinking about this thread and artists and writers, and how Marvel is just enjoying success by poaching DC's talent I'm trying to cobble together a pool of the next talent Marvel will poach from DC.

My tops so far are:

Ivan Reis (put him on Namor and I'm sold - to hell with Suckquaman, better yet Avengers)
Patrick Gleason
Cliff Chiang

Marvel likes getting their writers from Image. Aren't most of the "architects" ex Image writer?

I just saw that a new issue of Twelve is coming out.

Is this real life?

Cool, when's it coming out? I've read that JMS returned to Marvel to finish it a few weeks ago.

It will probably come to nothing, but there is a petition out there that will hopefully generate some buzz from Hollywood to get The Goon movie made.

alright GAF, looking to start reading comics. My GF got me The Amazing Spiderman Essentials Vol. 1 and I'd want to start the X-Men comics as well, plus I want to start from the very beginning. Would it be better to be starting off with the Essentials, Masterworks, or Omnibus(keep in mind pricing and ease of getting)

Just watched Captain America. It was...OK. I thought Thor was a much better movie. It did end on a high note though. Also, Hugo Weaving is the man.

I don't know much about comics having just started reading them three weeks ago, but I started with X-Force and I'm loving it. I'm buying trade paperbacks off Amazon for about $10 a piece, and they're pretty entertaining. Plus from what I understand the X-Force line is still ongoing, so might be a good way to get started with the X books?

Will drop pants for Sony.

Anybody hear about a book called Blacksad? It's set in an anthropomorphic- no wait, don't go! It's like, 1950s McCartheyism private eye/noir style awesomeness, except everybody is like, cat people and bird people and whatever. It's pretty great. Translated from French I think though, so it loses a little something in translation... I don't really like the rhythm of the speech, and it's not complex or anything. But the style is absolutely gorgeous.

Does anyone remember when Pied Piper came out of the closet? Was it a big deal? I randomly took an old Flash out of a longbox and was flipping through it (August 1991, #54 I think) and Flash and Piper are talking. Flash asks Piper if the Joker is gay, and then Piper says "I don't think so, but I am." Flash gets embarrassed and speeds off. But everything is cool by the end. I don't remember buying or reading this issue.

If price is your main concern, the Essentials are the way to go if you don't mind the b&w. The omnibi are generally low print runs and go out of print. I think the first X-Men one is out of print. Probably the paperback Masterworks are your best bet if you want color.

How was Infestation? I considered picking it up, but I don't like to spend more than $15 or so a week on comics, and there were more important things on my list.

I think Jason Aaron more or less started at the big 2, but you are correct for the most part. Marvel likes to hire writers who have proven themselves on creator owned titles.

Aaron, so far as he's been on my radar, started at Vertigo on Scalped. I'm sure comicbookdb will prove me wrong.

Remender and Fraction are part of the Bendis Portland Lefty Circle Jerk Club IIRC.

Just reading Invincible and they totally nailed it with companies restarting series like the 52 thing with DC

I thought Thor was better, but I thought they were both pretty mediocre. Don't have a whole lot of hope for Avengers, personally.
I felt like Captain America was fun, C+/B- material that lacked a middle act (or had its middle act condensed into a three minute montage) and a lazy, convenient ending (I've got to crash the plane just so I can be frozen for the sequel!) which hurt it. I felt Thor was all around terrible with a "romance" that felt tacked on and humor in the form of Kat Dennings that made me want to smash my head into a wall.

Doesn't apply. They are not going back to the old continuity. Kirkman knows this but is doing it for the quick buck. ;)

If you want to be completely jaded, then comics are fucked no matter what but at least DC tried to stop the bleeding.

That panel doesn't say anything about going back to old continuity (Batman and Green Lantern already did that lololololol), it says they were going back to old numbering which every DC and Marvel comic that ever reset it's numbering has eventually done.

They've also explicitly stated that that's not happening either. Kirkman is just being as much of an asshat as some online.

Unless of course if he's not talking about the New52 since he doesn't mention that either.

You honestly think that the numbering is going to stay like that forever? Not even forever...5 years?

Also, the continuity will probably revert too. It's not going to be all at once but it will happen gradually. That's what happened post-crisis. Dan Jurgens liked reading about the Fortress of Solitude as a kid, so he put it back in. Jeoh Loeb liked reading about Supergirl (the real one) as a kid, so he put her back in. Someone (IDR who) put Krypto back in no doubt for the same reason. By the mid 00s Superman barely even resembled what John Byrne had done.

If I remember when that panel appeared correctly, it is very very likely he was referring to the new 52.

Ok, I don't want to tell you how to live your life or anything, but you do know those early comics kinda suck, right? I mean they're interesting from a historical standpoint and occasionally entertaining, but they're not exactly what I would call good comics. You way better off finding a modern acclaimed run and jumping in there. The you're guaranteed a great story and you can move backwards and forwards in time a it suits you.

The past 20/30 years have had some amazing mind blowing comics. Starting in the 60s just feels like you're going to get very bored before you get to the good stuff.

My advice, if you want to read spidey then jump on at Brand New Day and read on. X-Men, start with Whedons run and see where it takes you.

Did you just imply that the Steve Ditko Spider-Man run sucks?

WHAAAAAAA? No no no. His Frankencastle is made for you. And his UXF is the best book on the planet for the last 19 issues. Issue 20 was recalled and burned.

You be nice!

Anyone else reading the new Transformers series? I liked the first 2 #1s. Never been a Transformers comics reader, so I don't even know, is this a direct continuation of the previous IDW series?

I read Laika! It was enjoyable! Thank you for the recommendation GAF. I admit to knowing much of the Laika story already so it didn't make me weep buckets, but as someone who imagines dogs talking to him all the time I did sympathise with Miss Yelena...

Blacksad is kind of Spanish in that the authors are Spanish but it's published in French first. I don't think the most recent volume is available in English yet?

How's the TMNT book? Thinking about picking up the all back issues.

The TMNT is all right I suppose. It is trying to combine aspects of the original mirage comic and elements of the 80's toon here and there. My biggest beef with it is that it is trying to stretch out the origin story a bit too long.

(This is a problem I've had with comics in general since the early 2000s. It seems like every story has to be made so that it will fit a TPB. I though that the events of issue 1-6 could be done in half the amount)

At issue 6 we were still getting tidbits about the origin and there is most definitely more to come. The story puts a new spin on the origin thats for sure, a whole new layer almost. It's hard to say how it will affect future stories though. I am not saying "the TMNT origin is pretty much well known so just get it over with", but stuff like the decision to keep on jumping between two time frames really draws on.

Sorry bro, Garth Ennis stretched and ruined my mangina with his definitive run on Punisher. Frank doesn't need to exist in the pantywaist Marvel Universe.

X-Force is a collection of the worst characters ever. Maybe not the worst I doesn't have Shoehorn in it, right? No wait I think Shoehorn is in it too, so yeah the definitive pile of high yellow stinking runny cat shit.

A friend put a copy in front of me to read and I couldn't choke it down. Pretty to look at but ditch Gun Spiderman, Shoehorn, and Oriental Psylocke and maybe I'll be able to suffer through it.

Screw you jerks my Betsy Braddock is a proper lady and wear sweet armor and chainmail!

They're fascinating from a historical standpoint, but I'd agree that neither the art nor the writing have aged particularly well.

This is true for some Silver Age comics, I had a hard time getting through the Green Lantern omnibus for instance, but the comics Marvel was putting out back then (particularity Fantastic Four and Spider-Man) will always be great.

Remender puts out one marginal issue of UXF (that wasn't even his fault!) and it's open season with Comics-GAF. You people are piranhas!

It is a direct continuation of the events of "chaos" and the death of optimius prime one shot. The previous volume was really good for issues 1-16 IMO (All Hail Megatron). Wasn't a huge fan of what came after though.
