Sony’s earnings report, issued yesterday, puts the PlayStation 3 at 6.5 million units sold worldwide for the holiday quarter, topping the 5.6 million units registered by Nintendo’s Wii for the same period — but falling short of the 8.2 million Xbox 360 sales reported by Microsoft.
According to data compiled by GeekWire, it’s the first time that the Xbox 360 has led worldwide holiday sales since 2006, when the PlayStation 3 and Wii were just being launched, posting a partial quarter and not yet ramping up their manufacturing to meet demand.
Here’s the bigger news: The Xbox 360′s strong holiday quarter also put the Microsoft console ahead in worldwide sales globally for the full year of 2011, with 14.9 million units sold, compared with 14.1 million for the PS3 and 10.33 million for the Wii.
According to our data, compiled from historical earnings reports, it’s first time the Xbox 360 has topped the worldwide console market for a full year of head-to-head competition with the PS3 and Wii.
Microsoft’s surge reflects the strong reception for the Kinect motion sensor and the expansion of the console as a home entertainment device, enabled by regular software updates.
Don Mattrick, the Microsoft video-game chief, had predicted last year at the E3 conference that Xbox 360 would become the No. 1 console globally.
On a cumulative basis, Nintendo is still the king of the current console generation, with 95 million Wiis sold worldwide, compared with 66 million Xbox 360 for Microsoft and 62 million Ps3s for Sony.

'09 was a huge year for Wii o_O

Wii momentum is fading real fast, no wonder Nintendo is pushing Wii U for this year and planning a huge launch for the machine.

Probably one of the most amazing stories in gaming history is how the 360 turned itself around coinciding with the Kinect and Slim.

I thought this was a typical cocky move I hate seeing from a company and it sucks that they fulfilled that goal. Still, congrats MS.

Wasnt there a thread just a couple months ago saying that PS3 had passed 360 sales in 2011? Or something like that? Microsoft really put it in gear this year.

I really like my 360 but I still think it's a damn shame that Microsoft didn't lose more because how they treated RROD in general.

I attribute the success of MS to Kinect.

Innovation through hardware and devices can quickly be immitated and any advantage you had will can be lost pretty quickly. If you scarifice power for innovation, you'll eventually be copied and then marginalized.

Hopefully Nintendo has learned an important lesson and strives to have a better balance between hardware device innovation/uniqueness and overall power. Although it did take Sony and MS a long while to mimick the Wii.

Sounds like someone blew their load early.

Any predictions as to when PS3 will overtake 360 now?

I don't think it will but sales will stay comparable.
Thats about how much I used my PS3 last year. On topic, that has been an amazing turnaround for the Xbox brand this gen.
I think the most telling thing is how the xbox brand oes next generation because I think they are going to have to prove they can keep this up.

what's wrong with the colour choices? the wii has the blue disk tray thing going on, and the PS3 slim packaging heavily features red, and not blue. makes sense to me anyways.

if you're basing them being the wrong colour because of the company logos, then Microsoft shouldn't be green.

on topic, i know it's kicking a horse when it's down, but i can never resist.

which year was the year of the PS3 again?

But Red Wii is the best Wii

and nintendo hasn't been red in forever.

I played video games on my 360 for like 10 hours the entirety of 2011. :/

Same, it was depressing really. At least this year my console will see some action in the form of American Nightmare and The Witcher 2. Guess I'll be getting Mass Effect 3 for the 360 too, considering I've got those imported saves from the first two games. I wanna know what the riveting consequences for porking Jack in 2 are gonna be.

I put in around 200 hours on the PS3 and 300 hours on the 360 (primarily due to Fallout and Skyrim), Number of games I played were more on PS3 though.

Yes, it's my fault the 360's library doesn't cater to me.

It's telling that the only 360 games I bought this year were multi-platform and only purchased on 360 because my PC is jank, or is considerably better on 360 than PS3.
You're a good poster and everything, but what does that has to do with the 360 been the top selling console for 2011?

If the chart was about "the most played consoles in 2011"; then yeah. But you playing your 360 for like 10 hours, for some personal reasons; has no relation with the topic.

Is like when you went berserk on that Media Create thread, because people were asking/talking mostly about Nintendo games/sales and you didn't liked it. If you wanted to know sales of non-Nintendo stuff, ask about it. If you want to discuss about the consoles people played the most in 2011; make a thread about it.

Because it disappoints me that hardware with software that doesn't target me at all manages to achieve such success. I would've thought larger success = larger target audience but my interests are niche and I suppose don't fit in with MS's plans.

It's all about the FPS-bro-dude-guy allthathappyhorseshit.jpg

Ugh, return to greatness o' mystical JRPG !

Considering how poor a year it was for 360 exclusives, this says a lot about Kinect methinks.

I do wonder if that momentum will be lost in the coming year though.

I was not a big 360 fan for the longest time but I'm liking it more and more nowadays. Has a lot to do with SCEE being incompetent people and my desire to not support them. I don't give a crap about Kinect but I'm okay with it.

Sony has to change a lot if they want to win me back next gen. I still prefer their exclusives to Microsoft's and Trophies are more interesting to me than Achivements but I just can't overlook all the mistakes SCEE makes over and over and over again.

Kinect has shipped about 18 million units since launch (I think I remember reading that 8 mil was last year)

You might want to consider board games then. The 360's software library is as broad as any other console in the history of gaming.

While Kinect certainly helped, MS have established the 360 as the console for multi-plat games and online play. Throw in XBLA and it's not too hard to see why they've been doing so well.

This. It's the gamer's decision.
