Disney released a poster for the US version, titled: The Secret World of Arrietty.

Of course, I imagine that it'll only be released in an extremely limited run, not reaching any theater around me for 300 miles. I'm gonna have to wait for the fall (or whenever) to watch it on Bluray. I can't believe Disney is one year behind on Ghibli films. Sigh.

Disney's dub work of Ghibli films has just been great.

Fantastic movie, wish it qualified for Best Animated Feature this year so it could easily win.

I think Disney doesn't even care about Oscar consideration since they got it for Spirited Away. They don't even need to try anymore.

Howl's Moving Castle was at least submitted and nominated but they didn't do anything for Ponyo, presumably because it went up against The Princess and the Frog. I expect Disney will do the bare minimum with Arietty, especially if the February release date is anything to go by.

I saw the poster in the wild last night at an AMC here in Austin.. pretty impressive given the release is so far out. It was one of those tall floor to ceiling (or close to it) vinyl standees.

Wow, awesome. They're advertising it already? Way to go Disney! (Now release it in more than 30 theaters in the US plz >.<)

It is a gorgeous film. I think there should perhaps have been more borrowing expeditions, or at least more interaction between Arrietty and Sho.

Loved the
melancholy ending
. The movie has pacing problems, but it's a great debut from Yonebayashi.

I could have sworn I posted in this thread after seeing Arriety in my local arts cinema... have we got two Arriety threads going? Anyway, great film. I preferred it to Ponyo, but they are so different it's hard to take a stab at which is a 'better' film. What you can say at least is that it (obviously) doesn't suffer from any of Miyazaki's directing foibles such as the sudden-ending and the soundtrack is gorgeous.

And yes, the UK special edition box is a thing of beauty... but I just cannot justify its inflated cost compared to the standard edition. Same thing goes for the Japanese discs, by an even larger scale.

US trailer!

Link

VO sounds good, and I like the use of Jonsi's 'Around Us'.
I'd have to watch the entire film to be sure, of course, but from that trailer the English dub sounds far superior to the American one, despite being a little twee in places.

It's only an extra pound or two?/

Haha. Don't quote RRP.

It's more like:

standard DVD - priced aggressively under RRP price to match the price of every other DVD sold in the UK.

special edition - sold at RRP, therefore too expensive.

edit - actually, while we're on the subject, has anyone done a region comparison of the blu ray encodes between Optimum, Disney and whoever Ghibli uses in Japan?

i lovefilmed this a few days ago as it wasn't on near me in the cinemas. absolutely loved it, simple, beautiful and wonderfully good natured. the opening twenty minutes or so when the borrowers were doing their first borrowing was amazing in particular. so glad a new ghibli director knocked it out the park, hasn't happened since whisper in the heart :(, as miyazaki and takahata are getting on.

need to grab the blu-ray sometime

I read somewhere that Optimum's was better than Disney at least for certain films, can't find it now :/

I can't believe this shit is getting released on Blu ray already in 90% of the world, while the US doesn't get it theatrically for another month. Fuck Disney. :/

Curse them even more if you don't get the English dub and have to settle for that American track.

Sucks but what can ya do. I'm gonna remain strong and not watch it until the US release -- it's getting close! :)

Do you mean for Arrietty only or for Ghibli in general? Optimum Ghibli releases of their movies shot on film are DNR'd to mush. Avoid. Digitally produced stuff is fine though, as far as I can tell.

Ghibli Japan has the highest quality encoding, but Disney is quite good.

Hopefully the US Blu ray will have the UK dub, as well as Japanese.

Yeah, well, the closest theater to me that got Ponyo was 300 miles away. Of course it will be the same for Arrietty, so I'm gonna have to wait for the Blu ray release in the Fall. :(

Yeah, such bullshit. It would be easy to just go online and watch it but I really want to wait until it's in the theatres. Hopefully my local spot is showing Arrietty next month.

Guys I think you shouldn't complain so much because yeah we all got to enjoy Arrietty long before you did but on the downside we didn't have you to warn us how terrible Earthsea was either.

I'm pretty sure Japan hated it too. You should've listened to them!

Saw this the other weekend. Fantastic movie, better than Ponyo by far.

Arriety's first borrowing was really fun and the moment she got caught was really tense. Well done in the reaction and expression.

The part where Shou talked about extinction of the Borrowers was really heavy I thought. Didn't see that one coming.

The ending wasn't a cliche one where they just move into the doll house. When Arriety hugged Shou's finger, buried her face against him to cover her tears and wished that he had the best life ever overwhelmed me. Bittersweet ending.

Go see this movie!

I saw the Japanese version of this a few months ago. Pretty good, though the hyper gender-stereotypical portrayal of the mom as an easily frightened, overly dependent shrill and the dad as stoic and emotionless was annoying.

Oh yeah, and I remember Shou saying something reallllly fucked up about the
Borrower's going extinct
. Don't remember what exactly, but I remember it was a major WTF moment for me.

Otherwise, loved it. I agree, the ending was great.

I saw this a few months ago at the cinemas (in Japanese! with subs) I really enjoyed it, unfortunately none of my friends did and I hate it when that happens (they are all Ghibli fans too fyi).

Anyway, it's very deliberately paced, atmospheric and absolutely gorgeous. I found it mesmerizing, they found it boring.

Yeah that was kind of irritating, but on the other hand the mother was kind of amusing. They made up for that poor portrayal with the rest of the female characters I think.

Yeah that was pretty fucking weird. It got a big reaction from my friends. My interpretation is that
he himself was dying and that was his way of dealing with it, by feeling less alone. Fucked up yes, understandable for someone sick at that age?
I think so.

I think, more plainly, it's simply that his own situation leads him to be matter-of-fact about such matters. Less of a way of dealing and more of a "oh, you too, huh?"

Yeah, that's a better way of putting it.

I cant remember exactly what he says, -I should try and find the quote- but it came off so strange. It may have been the subs.

New US TV Spot

I doubt we'll get the UK dub on a home release here. Disney did drop the Fox dub of Totoro...

What an awful commercial. I hate how Disney tries to market Studio Ghibli movies just like the do their own animated features. The tone is completely off.

Also, the lack of the Fox English dub on any of the widescreen releases of Totoro is a travesty. It's one of the few actually great English dubs for a Studio Ghibli movie and I hate that it's not available.

I dunno, I think Disney have done some great work in the past on Ghibli dubs. Princess Mononoke in particular was some stellar work and, were it not for the film so obviously being SET IN JAPAN WITH JAPANESE FAMILIES DOING JAPANESE THINGS, I wouldn't have a preference of dub vs sub when it comes to Whisper Of The Heart, either.

Also, Howl's Moving Castle's US dub has Billy Crystal playing Calcifer so that is obviously the version people should watch.

But yeah, this Arriety dub seems tripe. Ponyo was also kind of poor, with all the HEY CELEBRITY VOICE WORK OMG ITS LIAM NEESON standing out like a sore thumb.

Is this not out in the US yet? That's weird. We had this in cinemas in Denmark this Christmas and we're painfully slow to localize Ghibli titles. Hell, we still haven't gotten Laputa or Whisper of the Heart - and just recently got Mononoke and Nausicaa.

Anyway, I really liked this movie. The score was great and it looked amazing. The whole world of the Borrowers was amazing!

I probably could of worded my post better. The majority of the Disney dubs are fine. I don't really love most of the them, but they're passable. (Except for Totoro... Ponyo wasn't that great either outside of Tina Fey.) But the only ones that I think are actually on par with the originals are Princess Mononoke and Porco Rosso.

But the Fox English dub of Totoro is really great. Mei and Satsuki were so perfectly cast and that is a make or break aspect of the film. The Fanning sisters version was just way too precocious and saccharine sweet. I couldn't even get through the first twenty minutes of the Disney dub.

Mononoke dub wasn't Disney.

Plus it's bad.

Am I the only one who couldn't stand the cat returns? I completely forgot about it until this post... It just didn't feel like ghibli to me...

Though I personally LOVED everything about ponyo. different strokes different folks i suppose
It's bullshit, but a sweet tribute.

Oh, you're right - that was Miramax, right?

I personally thought it was great.

I think it's an example of celebrity voiceacting syndrome, but works out well enough anyway. Minnie Driver, Claire Danes, and Jada Pinkett Smith all did good work and disappear into their roles; Billy Bob Thornton's voice coming from that character is distracting.
