I'm really glad I currently share a small apartment, which makes it really hard for me to justify buying large sets that I have nowhere to display.

I plan on moving into a house within the next few months, and it will be hard to resist building custom shelving in our second bedroom to display stuff like the VW Van and Tower Bridge.

It's really a pain in the ass because of the random way sets are marked down. I checked a bunch of sets last night at a local WalMart and found one out of about 10 on the clearance list that was actually marked down.

Yup - they do a TERRIBLE job advertising it.

I'm off to the local LEGO shop without any idea what to get...
Wish me luck. I'll post the loot later

GLHF (your wallet loves you no matter what you think).

Well, thanks to this thread I went out and picked up an X-Wing last night. Finished it all in one sitting and had a blast.

I'm tempted by the Tie Fighter but that Imperial Shuttle just looks incredible!

Imperial Shuttle is #1 on my wishlist but it's so damn big I don't know where I would put it.

EDIT: Why isn't there a LEGO store in KC or Tulsa??? There's nothing in OKC to justify driving there.

vvvvvv Holy balls.

Damn

Just 'popped in' to the Lego store Westfield. Bought:

- fire brigade
- grand emporium
- pet shop
- tower bridge
- imperial shuttle

That's in addition to
- queen anns revenge (bought on offer)
- venator cruiser (from eBay)
- cafe corner (pieced together on bricklink)I now have enough VIP points for a free tie fighter too

I *need* to spread out building. These should last till the end of the year

Btw, the Lego store guy that helped me to the taxi said they were getting the town hall in next week for preview and building, and it'd be on sale 1st march.

Wait, Wal-Mart 50% off sale? What are the details about this?

Wal-Mart has been putting certain Lego sets on clearance for 50% off, but there is no consistency among individual Wal-Mart stores. Some stores have nothing for clearance, others have already been picked clean. Apparently it's up to individual store managers as to what to put up for sale and when. You can follow this thread for discussion about the clearance http://toysnbricks.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4804&sid=ca73d20c0a3930eb0d667b8a83456229

Check out regular Walmarts for the best chance at finding the sale (i.e. non-SuperCenter Walmarts). Go to Walmart.com and search for the local stores in your area to see if you have any regular Walmarts nearby

Star Wars, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, and City sets have been the focus of the clearance sales. I'm waiting for a Black Pearl or Queen Anne ship for 50% off :(

My Wal mart had the black pearl for 25% off but I didn't scan the tag to see if it rang up 50. The other stuff was full price. Bastards

Dang you Target.com and UPS in taking your sweet-a$$ time of almost a week to ship out the Lego X-Wing and Tie Fighter my wife ordered for me on the 1st (thank you hon! =)...sucks even more when we already see it on the Target store shelves at the local mall over the weekend...still waiting =(

(BTW, gotta like the 5% discount on all Target purchases using the red card =)

And BTW, if you want to go Wal-mart deal hunting, make sure to check both the Lego sections as well as the clearance shelves and use the price scanners mounted around the store. I rarely go to Walmart so I didn't know where the clearance area is. It's typically close to the lawn & garden section.

Every store does their own individual sales for Lego. All you can do is go check it out. If they have a scanner, you can just start checking prices, otherwise, they'll have marked down sets in the aisle. They also do NOT match their online prices (discovered this the hard way).
Crap, I was just at Walmart to look at what they had, but didn't think to scan the prices. Why would they mark it down but not advertise it?

because it's walmart.

The local one here did have the clearance shelves, but no Lego sadly. I scanned a few in the dedicated isle, but nothing came up. :(

Picked up the TIE Fighter and X Wing last night, put them together while watching TV.

Figured I would do the TIE Fighter first, as it didn't have any mechincal parts, and I am glad I did. Not really a satisfying build, and I am still unsure what those two wenches inside the cockpit section do.

The X Wing was more fun, and the way the s foils work are brilliant. I don't really have any place to put the extra minifigs, so Porkins (armed with a gun and lightsaber), the two droids, the Imperial officer, and the Death Star officer are having a mini battle on the outside of the X Wing.

I have the Lego Falcon 7965 and it's gonna end up to be the party bus packed with all the extra minifigs I have =P

You guys are something else!

I was a huge fan of Technic growing up, I loved making up my own little robots. I'm surprised how little love there is for it around here.

8880revolve.gif

This was my favourite set. I got it the year it came out, which I guess made me 8 at the time.

Every wheel is sprung, driven, and steered. This means there is 4 wheel rack and pinion steering, all wheel drive using 3 differential gears, and 4 wheel independent double wishbone suspension. The wheels are linked to a 4 speed synchronized transmission, the first of its kind in Lego. There is a rear mounted V-8 reciprocating engine. There are 8 shock absorbers. The rear boot opens to reveal the engine via a marvelous linkage, and the concealed headlights can be opened via a lever on the dash.

I'm having a nostalgia overload here reading http://www.technicopedia.com.

Pretty much 5 years in a row I got the "big set" of the year for Christmas. As tempting as it is to try and reacquire some of this stuff I think I should leave it in the past.

You shouldn't. You should resurrect that passion. I picked one of these up for £40 on ebay, about six months ago:

My childhood hero. It's built and sitting in my ManCave now and I love it dearly.

I am looking for a decent 1000+ piece set that's a neat build, which should I do next?

I was kinda leaning towards the main street ones like Grand Emporium, but I figure I should ask you before dropping 100 bucks.
My next (actually first) two 1000+ builds are the Millennium Falcon and the Maersk freight train. Both look great, both around 1200 pieces. Has anyone here done both and can comment?

That Auto Chassis set you have a pic of here was my holy grail in Lego as a kid. I never got it. I drooled over the box whenever I went to Toys R Us. My three biggest pieces of pride as a kid were:

A bunch of us can help you. ;)

If you're thinking about them, the modulars (Grand Emp, Fire Brigade, Pet Shop) are EXCELLENT builds, especially if that sort of them interests you.

When are the currently available modular sets likely to become more unavailable? A couple of them are listed as 'hard to find' on lego's site, but still in stock.

I've noticed some already on Amazon being offered for way over RRP, even though they're still available on Lego's site.

Fire Brigade and Grand Emporium are ther next to go. Their actual lifespan is currently unknown.

Today is my day off work and I'm all done with class...I have a little extra spending money, about $70. Getting ready to head to Wal-Mart and browse the lego section, haaaa. I don't really know what I want, but if I see a lego set and have an overwhelming compulsion to buy, I shall.

Hardcore - wow.

How much did it cost you to piece out the Cafe Corner via Bricklink?

You really can't go wrong with the X-Wing, which is within your budget.

I had the version before the new one, the one that had a little compartment on the front of the craft. It was much smaller and more...blocky? I don't know, the new version looks much smoother overall. I would really like a new one...but jeez, I've always wanted a TIE fighter. Always. But I read that some people weren't that satisfied with it.

And there probably isn't any chance of me stumbling on a Slave I set, so I'm not gonna hope.
yes I am

Anyway, I'll post pics of whatever I do decide to get!

I have the TIE Fighter but haven't built it yet. From what I've heard the finished model is very nice but the actual build is not that much fun. It's only 400 pieces.

My only problem with the X Wing is that the cockpit latch pieces aren't held down nearly enough. Every time I open it, they come off.

Nope, pretty boring build.

A friend of mine bought the Creator lighthouse which is really nice. Light-up brick! I love how you can build those sets three different ways.
