Weekend sale: Topware Games 50% off

Recommendations?

- Enclave is a really good 3rd person melee combat game, it's hard as hell though so if you don't like a challenge then avoid.
- Gorky 17 is a *very* unique and awesome game. It's like a mix between Resident Evil and Jagged Alliance. It's also hard as balls though.
- Two Worlds despite it's reputation is actually a pretty good action RPG. The version on gog is all patched up and fixed.

Can't really speak to the rest of them. The Earth 20X0 series has a lot of fans but I've not really delved into them.

I played The 7th Guest tons when I was a kid, and really want it just for that nostalgia factor. Only issue is that it has aged terribly and I don't think I would pay more than $5-$6 for it...

Enclave's great. It is pretty hard, but it's a good game. Nice graphics for the time too. It's a third person action game from Starbreeze. I really like this game. The story's dark but decently well told, there are a bunch of characters to play as, the levels are well designed and fun to explore, there are lots of obstacles and challenges throughout them, and more. The only issue I had with it is that the characters with bows can be tricky to use, because you're usually fighting at fairly close range so shooting them without them cutting you apart can be tough.

Septerra Core is an okay but not great Western console-style RPG. That is, anime-style art, consoleish menu battles, but US developed and for the PC. It's got a female lead, too. However, the game got mixed reviews, and opinions now are mixed at best I think. I think it's okay and reasonably fun, but it's not a great game, i will admit, just decently good. For $3 though... yeah, quite likely worth trying.

Jagged Alliance 2: Wildfire - this is the JA2 addon, yes? Not for people who haven't played the franchise then, I would think, but that is a good series.

Knights & Merchants - Decent Settlers-style game. It depends on if you like medieval economic strategy games like that.

As for the Earth series, 2140's not too memorable I think. The 2150 trilogy... they were moderately popular at the time, but while I loved, and love, RTSes, I remember really disliking the demos of those games. I don't know, it just didn't work for me... I didn't like the camera for one thing, it requires too much user manipulation for an RTS. I can't remember much about the gameplay, but obviously I didn't like it too much, given my negative memories (haven't played those games in a long time). As for 2160, I haven't played it. So yeah, the 21x0 series, and the three 2150 games in particular, did have fans, but I at least definitely wasn't one of them. I don't think there were many good 3d RTSes back then, though... I think it took quite a while for 3d RTSes to actually work well. For 3d RTSes before Warcraft III, Warzone 2100 was okay and I particularly liked Conquest: Frontier Wars, but stuff like the Earth 2150 series, Ground Control, etc... not so much. I even had some issues with Homeworld, and didn't like it as much as its very high reviews, though at least that one had some things certainly going for it -- graphics, music, originality, theme, etc.

the price of games during those sales is so low it negates almost any reservation if you are interested in the genre.

Anyone know if Two Worlds is worth playing after all the patches? I'm seriously tempted as long as it's not broken still.

Also, is there a download service which has Risen?

Hitman 2: Silent Assassin out today, another $10 title, same as on Steam. I remember liking this quite a bit back when it came out.

Highest rated title on metacritic from the series too. Has any one tried it recently to say how well it holds up? I remember reading the first one was said to have not aged as well as the more recent entries (as well as containing some poor level design later in the game).

As a random side note, my copy of Alice: Madness Returns just refuses to run via Steam anymore. It used to work perfectly, I'm guessing it's some sorta DRM issue that was patched in, I'm not sure. I tried to revert back to a copy of the directory from when it was launching, and it still didn't work. Added exceptions to the firewall and AV, no luck. Even checked file integrity, nothing. It's not my PC, because I then downloaded it through origin and it loaded fine (even found my existing games), must be something with trying to run it from Steam. So much for being able to rely on playing backed up games when there's 3rd party DRM issues. At least it runs through Origin though, it wasn't a total loss.

The first one is pretty bad, really, and way different from the others. Hitman 2 is where the series really starts.

I haven't played it in many years, but while it's probably a lot more limited than Blood Money (which i still play all the time), the classic Hitman gameplay started in 2 so it should hold up and still be a lot of fun.

Does the Thief series have any story or is it mostly just gameplay?

In one of the podcasts (can't remember which) Ken Levine talked about creating an "anti-hero" when designing Thief Dark Project. Garrett as a selfish, business-like character who's only in it for himself, really makes him likeable. I like the world too. If/when you play it, make sure to explore well since you can learn a lot of the lore that way.

Perhaps off-topic, but what's the deal with Hitman: Contracts? It's not on Steam; I hope it gets a release on GOG.

I played the whole series a few months back. Hitman 2 holds up really well, I'm glad to report. Obviously, the excellent level design shows no signs of ageing. The AI can be a little off-putting, and might take a while to get used to. One thing still frustrating is the really slow sneak speed.

Liscensing hell due to one song in the game.

Ah, I was not aware of this problem. A shame, really. I rather enjoyed the remastered levels from the first game. Contracts would be a great game for those new to the series since the first one hasn't held up that well.

hitman2 is definitely my least favourite most disliked hitman. can't stand the stupid personal story, priest revenge crap. some ok missions. but of the series as a whole; hitman1 is an awesome curiosity. contracts has great remaked missions, mostly no nonsense. blood money is no nonsense perfected.

Weird issue with Alice, I just booted my Steam copy no problem. Nothing happens at all clicking it in the library to start? Have you tried deleting any registry entries/left over files in the Steam folder/Documents?

So I want to get Thief Gold and Thief 2 but on gog it says its only XP and Vista compatible.

Will it run on Windows 7 without any issues or do I need to do something to them first?

FYI, the GOG compatibility notes are incredibly conservative. I own all sorts of stuff and the only game that has problems in 7 is Interstate 76. If you're curious about anything else, the appropriate GOG forum will certainly mention any gamebreaking compatibility issues.
Nah, I'm with Wazoo. 11th Hour would fit their MO.

GOOD Old Games. Therefore! Not The 11th Hour.

Both Thief Gold and Thief 2 are Windows 7-compatible. It says so on their respective pages.

You need to do some jiggerypokery with a fan-made fix to get cutscenes running and to have it running in higher, widescreen resolutions. It isn't too tough though. The gog.com forum for the Thief games also has a collection of fan-made fixes for T1 that also spruces up some of the game using T2 assets. (e.g. actual skyboxes, some improved textures...)

HK-47

Oh, bitch bitch bitch.
Silent Assassin is a good game that lead to even better games. Its certainly worth checking out.

I can't believe I missed the Nox release! Found it by accident when looking at the Ultima games. I never finished it once I bought Diablo 2. Now if I can only finish it before Diablo 3...

I have to say, I think that GoG's biggest asset is their forum community. Helpful, comprehensive and complete.

I'm going nuts waiting for Anachronox. Really hope it's coming soon. Not that I have time to play it right now, but I just want it installed in case I want to give it a go!

Is dotemu related in any way to gog? I've followed them since they first popped up, but don't haven't found much info on the company.
