I purchased Ticket to Ride the other day and have been having a fun time with it.

With that said, is there anything I can purchase to make the cards easier to deal with. Those things are tiny.

Secondly, what is everyone's opinion on an automatic shuffler?

You're talking about the USA map, right? Well you're in luck! The 1910 expansion includes larger sized replacement cards for the game.

from what I've heard/read, automatic card shufflers are poop.

As we play we discard the cards in 4-5 different piles randomly. Automatic shuffling!

Coolstuff was at Megacon and they had a ton of Eclipse in stock even though their site has been out forever. They were selling them for $150 each

They've been selling them on/off for $150, their reasoning is that they are acquiring them through 3rd parties like Ebay, so they are also paying at a markup. I don't completely agree with it, but hey, if people are willing to pay it.

The 1910 expansion is your solution. The USA map is the only one with small cards.

I third the 1910 expansion suggestion. Not only are they full-sized, they're significantly prettier and include new routes. I never play without it, now.

Played few acres of snow today. The game dragged on way too long. Thai was in part due to our incorrect interpretation of the siege rules. I'm still not clear on raids...

Anyways will need to play it again. So far though my initial impression isn't as good as I had hoped it would be.

Seeing the resale price everyone is selling at, I have a hard time they are getting so much stock from other sellers and able to offer them for $150. Also at the con they were selling all their merchandise for 8-10$ markups from their store. Yea they can do whatever they want but still feels pretty shitty to me.

Raids are easy. The person getting raided has to play the location card where you're raiding or a card that says it blocks raids. Else, you get the cube/disc.

Well con weekend cleanup done, we played LOTR LCG in our downtime and the group loved it, they kept digging through all my cards making new decks and kept wanting to retry any failed quest we had. Really liking the game, has lot of options.

Kinda sad to hear the rumors that the delayed Star Wars LCG is probably because they are going to get rid of the coop aspect and make it a competitive game.

I've only played it online, but it took me a good three games to really get a grip on it, and five before I won my first game.

Yeah I get that part. Was not clear to me if you could use raids on neutral locations where no village or town is present to establish a village.

You guys ever played BSG with 7 players? Or even 6? I'm not sure how much I like the sound of this sympathizer thing.

I've always found that the number of players where you don't get a sympathizer is the better number. So 5? I think? Because the game kind of sucks for whoever gets sympathizer since it removes all of the fun parts of being a cylon.

Not always - if the sympathizer card turns into "you are not a Cylon" and they had a "you are a cylon" card at the start, they still can continue on with their deviousness.

Our group prefers full games of BSG to maximize scheming/treachery.

Yeah I thought so, but we debated and weren't completely sure. Raids only have the purpose of making a town into a village or turn a village to neutral?

Ambushing makes the person put a card back into the empire deck if it has the indian head symbol right? It doesn't make affect a town or village as well.

I assume you must announce if you are going to ambush or raid in advance.

Also, when you 'block' a raid or ambush, you must discard the card meaning your next turn you start will 4 cards instead of 5 right? You don't get to draw back up to 5 prior?

Played Ora Et Labora (I probably misspelled that) this weekend. I liked it a lot. I tend to like all the games in the harvest trilogy though (can this be considered a trilogy now?). Came in second by about 20 points.

Second game was about a 6 hour game of Tales of Arabian Nights (I love this game so I don't mind it dragging on that long).

First tragedy, then farce.
Decided to jump in the Kickstarter for Gunship First Strike at the Gunship Captain level.

I'm actually interested in that, but I'm hesitant because of the component changes.

I think the kickstarter went much better than he thought it could, and he just started making up new bonuses to keep the money flowing. I want to see what works out as far as the molded plastic bits and how they work with the game.

The game itself looks really good though.

I'm actually a little interested in briefcase as well. It's not on kickstarter, it's on some other thing. The art is fanstastic and the game looks pretty good. The name however, is horrible.

Right on all accounts.

Thanks for the BSG suggestions guys. I'll probably try the No Symp variant if I can get the guys to go for it.

If we end up having 7 I'll go for 3 Cylons :p

Just got back from a long board game weekend.

Played 3 games of Eclipse. A good six or seven rounds of Risk: Legacy. Finally got to play Dominant Species. And a handful of Innovation/7 Wonders games during downtime.

Couldn't get Mage Knight (nobody knew the game) or Ora & Labora on the table.

Welp,

The game is up on BGG. My publishing company and myself are still not approved, and the images may be a week or so away.. but it's a start!

Love the fact that turns are time-limited. Had a few friends over on the weekend, and I think that's problem No. 1 with our board game playing... there were some games where people were just coming to grips with the rules, but a distinct lack of forethought means that some people take too much time on their turns... probably have some games taking 50% longer than they should.

I want Dominant Species so bad but it is sooo expensive. It is $85 at a local store which I wouldnt have a problem with if the components were actually good. Even CSI has it for $70.

Keep us updated every step of the way. Definitely interested in supporting GAF projects!

Yeah Gunship seems pretty cool. I might jump on later for it since it has so long to go.

I think I'm going to back Viva Java, I think the theme is pretty awesome and the components look pretty nice. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/dicehateme/vivajava-the-coffee-game?ref=category

Agents of Smersh is another game I have my eyes on, it sounds like a lot of fun but kind of complicated, not sure how that would go over with my group. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1545517208/agents-of-smersh-a-spy-storytelling-board-game?ref=category

I hear there's gonna be a visual redesign. Wait for that.

Got a friend stopping by tomorrow night for our first game of War of the Ring. Pretty psyched about it, have been since I first heard of the reprint last year. This is going to be the longest day of work ever.

There are pictures on BGG, I think it looks godawful but some people like it.

Jeez. That's a bummer. I have to say that the components on the board look great -- they read very well and look nice. It's the rest of the board that is God awful.

Is Twilight Struggle the only decent looking game published by GMT?

Labyrinth is pretty nice for a GMT game.

Got my copies of Twilight Struggle and Warhammer Invasion in the mail yesterday, played a few rounds of Warhammer and thought it was really fun. Really excited to try out Twilight Struggle soon once I get a hang of the rules. :D

Quick clarification question, in Twilight Struggle, if a event in a card is associated with the opponent, it DOES happen whether I like it or not even if I play the card just for its operation points? The only time events doesnt happen at the same time is if the card is associated with me and I have to choose between the event or its operation points?

Maybe I'm not super picky, but Urban Sprawl looks good. The board is plenty thick, as are the cardboard chits. The only thing I don't like is the paper money (which was also fairly thick, so it was good for paper). I replaced them with poker chips though.

Yup. Also the opponent's event doesn't happen when you play the card for space race.

aaaaaand Flash Point: Fire Rescue showed up in my Amazon gold box. how could I resist?

played a tense 4p game of Elder Sign last night. it was my first time testing out a difficulty variant so I was hesitant, but it ended up making perfect tension. We're rolling 1 green die at midnight; investigation result means nothing, any of the other 3 faces means doom token in addition to any regular ones. We fought Azathoth, which is the one where if he even wakes up we auto-lose. We were behind on Elder Signs vs Doom Tokens for the first 2/3 of the game but were able to overcome and seal him off in the end. It was neck and neck the entire time and I was worried the variant would end up killing us, which is fine if it does, but I would have beat myself up afterwards.

As already stated, you are correct in that your opponent's event plays out if you use the card for its ops.

Keep in mind though that you decide whether it's played before or after you use the Ops. Lots of ways to mitigate damage by making the right choice. It's part of the beauty of the game.

Arkham Horror foreverrrrr!! I have been playing this with friends for 2 years now. We have two add-ons: Innsmouth and Dunwich. My thirst for Lovecraftian games is satisfied. Almost! My two questions:
What do you think are the best add-ons for AH to get next? Also, are there more lovecraft based games that are acutally good/great?

Also, are there more lovecraft based games that are acutally good/great?

FFG, the publisher for Arkham Horror, has a whole line of Lovecraft themed games, including Elder Sign, Mansions of Madness, Call of Cthulhu card game, and possibly more. Elder Sign is really hit or miss (but I love it), never played MoM or CoC. I'm not sure any of them will satiate your thirst for more AH, but if any of those 3 would, my best guess would be MoM. This one looks more like a traditional board game with tiles you lay out and little plastic miniatures. Someone has to play the bad guys, though.

Gonna be playing BSG with 7 or 8 players tonight... here's what we're going to try, and if anybody has suggestions let me know:

- 3 Cylons
- First player starts with no Skill Cards as usual
- Second, third, and fourth player start with 2 Skill Cards as usual
- 5th, 6th player start with 3 Skill Cards
- 7th and 8th player start with 4 Skill Cards
- Going to pre-bake the deck Pandemic-style

- If only 7 players, 1 extra of each resource to start

That's it! We don't want to play with Sympathizers. Should be a riot with so many players.

Got in my first game of Twilight Imperium yesterday. God, what a game. I would have won, too. Unfortunately, the player opposite the board from me placed a wormhole tile right next to his home system, and then when I flipped the random tile near Mecatol Rex that is required for the 5 player setup, it happened to be a matching wormhole.

He was able to siege Mecatol Rex the turn after I conquered it from neutral by moving his sizable home world force through the wormhole.

Really great fun, though. Can't wait to get it back on the table.

So I finished another game of Defenders of the Realm last night. This time it took less than 3 hours and it was a lot of fun. We actually won and the game wasn't that hard this time, though we did get lucky and killed one of the generals with the last possible die. Next up we'll be trying Pandemic and a version of Munchkin.

Thanks for the clarification guys, helped during my first "full" play of Twilight Struggle.
I managed to outplay my opponent pretty heavily, him making a extreme blunder that made me able to play a "WE WILL BURY YOU!" card followed by a score card on europe, earning domination and enough points to go 20 USSR victory points in Turn 4.

Basically, I think I just achieved world domination as Soviet in the 60s. Awesome! :D
