It's the Gmail dilemma. If everyone used Gmail all emails would look fantastic and be able to contain a lot of media and formatting. But they don't, so all we have is Gmail-to-Gmail being a tiny fraction, but that fraction is still really good.

Selling a document viewer is idiotic. Charging $30 for one is insanity.

You want everyone to be able to see the documents. It's the document creation tools you charge for. Think of the Adobe Reader / Adobe Acrobat thing.

Er what? Think Photoshop and the rest of the Creative Suite

You can view psd files even without owning Photoshop, though. Even an old-ass image browser that I'm still using recognizes the format.
And you can view word docs without owning Office. Even old ass OpenOffice recognizes the format. Microsoft doesn't provide a free viewer though and neither does Adobe. By the way, Apple doesn't provide a free viewer for their iWork files either. You can't view and edit an iWorks document on Windows or Linux.

Microsoft has ALWAYS offered free viewers for Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.

But hey, why would you know that? They've only been doing this since the '90s.

This is nice.

Internet Explorer app switch

To help drive your existing site audience to your app, Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8 has a new app switch button, which will let users know when an app is available for the site they are viewing. When users launch Internet Explorer from the Windows 8 Start screen to view a website that has an app in the Windows Store, they can tap or click the app switch button to go directly to the corresponding listing page in the Windows Store. (By the way, this only works when using the Metro-style browser that you launch from the Start screen, and is not available if you launch Internet Explorer from the Windows 8 desktop.)

I seriously wish I could dual-boot Windows and iOS on the iPad 3. I can't see me buying a new Windows 8 tablet, but I'd really like to use it on a touch device.

Microsoft is on the verge of signing off the final version of its Windows 8 Consumer Preview. That is the word from a number of sources who tell us that the company has stopped compiling beta builds of Windows 8. The final build will be signed off officially on Friday and is expected to be numbered 8250.

Microsoft will unveil its Windows 8 Consumer Preview work during a special event at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona next Wednesday. We are told that the company will release the preview to the public at the beginning of the event, which kicks off at 3PM CET (9AM ET). Build 8250 includes a number of preinstalled games and applications, as well as the new Windows 8 logo. Microsoft has also removed the traditional Start button orb in build 8250, replacing it with the new logo on the charms bar. We will be reporting live from Microsoft's MWC event, so stay tuned for the full details on Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

I'm running Office 15 right now on my work computer. Its quite a bit buggy in its current alpha build I'm using but I should be getting a newer build in the next week, or so I was told. I think Office users are going to be very surprised by how much MS overhauled with 15, its great.

Do the apps go fullscreen when you press F11?

doesn't really look that much different than office 2010. Anyway, i loved the look of 2010, can't wait to use this.

If you buy a convertible laptop you won't need a useless tablet.

This.

Here's hoping for something a little larger than 10" that I can whip the screen off. But at the same time be able to connect it up to a decent sized screen when sat on the desk! Tablet + extremely portable laptop/ultrabook + desktop together. Yes please.

Office 15 looks very nice.

Very excited for the Consumer Preview of Win 8 next week.
I'm going to start using the CP as my main OS so its more like its launching for me. can't wait!

Wish i had a tablet to put this on though.

this is, why i wont download the CP. i want to enjoy w8 on a tablet, without spoiling myself by using it on my shitty laptop

I'd be happy if there is a WinFX enabled RDP client for iPad that allows me to use a Hyper-V VM running on my Win8 desktop like the iPad is a thin client box.

That would be so damn sexy.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those crazy guys who claim it's a computer, but calling the iPad a useless tablet is just laughable.

It's all about the software. I didn't buy an iPad to replace my computer or notebook, but thanks to the aspect ratio/form factor and some really awesome apps, it does specific things so well, i'd never use anything else. My iPad is the best Google Reader I've ever used, it's the best manga reader I've ever used, the best HTPC remote I've ever owned and I don't see how the Windows 8 release would change that. The fact that I'm using my iPad 99.9% of the time in portrait mode makes other tablets just unappealing.

Sure, if I was in a market for a new notebook, I'd get a transformer-like notebook with Windows 8, but it wouldn't be able to replace my "useless" tablet anytime soon.

Nevermind, Office Tabs won't let me have multiple windows open AT ALL unless I purchase the $35 version. Sigh, uninstalled :(

My thoughts as well. My initial reaction was "Oh good. They changed the colors again."

But obviously, that is selling them way short.

Anyway, not sure if I'll feel compelled to upgrade on Windows. I guess maybe just to get it to mesh better with Windows 8. I'm more excited about the next Office for Mac, as Microsoft is clearly still figuring how to build a modern OS X app out on Mac.
