Playstation vita, like the Ps2 ?

Hey,

Is it just me or is the playstation vita the new ps2? It seems sony hit the right notes with this machine, it's got good word of mouth, it has classic titles, some cool backwords compatability, and sony's first party offering is international and very strong.

When the ps2 came out, it was a dvd player at the time when dvd players were just announced to be the shit. The vita is coming out at a time, when oled, smartphone design and always on online is the rave.

Unlike the ps3 launch, its not overly expensive, its parts are not as complicatedand its a device that does so many things, that keeping it with you and charged might benefit you in ways you can't predict.

I like most of all how its size isn't soomething to be kept in your pocket but its a carry on. So it doesn't fall into the trap of trying to take pocket realastate.

I can't think of anymore comparisons, but the word of mouth reminds me of the ps2 word of mouth. Thoughts?

I think if sony ports a version of grant turismo 5 within 2 years, they will be able to gain back the momentum lost to the 3ds.

The PS2 was an unimpressive piece of hardware which sold very well.

The PSV is an impressive piece of hardware which is barely selling at all.

Don't see the comparison at all.

Except for the software or popularity, sure.
Well, the PS2 had a pretty poor launch lineup and wasn't all that strong in the US at first either. It's second year, however, was absolutely amazing.

The Vita has a great launch lineup, but lacks the popularity.

What word of mouth?

First party offering is 'international'? 'Strong?'

When I think PS2, I think exceptional collection of third-party exclusives and sales domination.

When I think Vita, as of now, I think the opposite.

At launch? The PS2 was certainly impressive at launch. Remember the MGS2 demo with ZOE a few months afterwards? That blew minds. And I say that as someone who very much loved his Dreamcast. The PS2 wasn't outclassed for a while.

And do we know that the Vita is barely selling at all yet?

ehh I think the 3ds has way better games at this point. The good thing about the vita that the psp did not have is the actual ability to compete with the 3ds if the games are right.

Ever since the PS3 people have been acting like Sony has had the strongest hardware forever, but that was never the case. PS2 was the weakest of its generation.
No, it wasn't, Dreamcast was, it also launched eighteen months before the other two, and included a DVD drive when it was very new tech.

I love my Vita and am having more fun playing it than any console launch I can remember in ages, but it's a bit early for comparisons like this I think.

No doubt it's a brilliant device, and in my opinion the launch lineup is fantastic, but more games need to be announced for the next few months, especially in Europe (3 of the 4 titles dated for March in the US are already out in Europe).

I hope the positive word of mouth leads to more sales, because it really is a fantastic handheld that deserves to succeed IF Sony and third parties keep supporting it with games as they have done at launch.

The Vita was #1 in videogames preorders on Amazon UK before launch, and Amazon actually ran out of preorder packs completely and had to offer a different bundle to anyone who preordered after they'd run out. Play.com also managed to sell out of at least some of their preorder bundles, so hopefully this all points to strong sales.

I mean, you can't say this yet. I'd love for it to have the great library of the PS2 and sell millions and millions of units because it is the best hardware Sony has ever sold.

PS2 was sold out from the moment it was launched and was in extremely high demand. Not so with the Vita.

It's not selling well in Japan, where portable gaming is much more popular and is following the insanely popular PSP.

The very narrow market Sony is aiming for in the US has not traditionally been interested in handheld gaming, so it'll be interesting to see if they can finally turn that around (although they tried the same thing with the PSP, which ended up becoming popular in the opposite demographic in the twilight of its life thanks to niche Japanese games).

Hard to compare the two. 3DS' launch lineup was poor and it went through a sizeable lull before the price drop and Mario Kart, etc.

Yeah people here tend to forget the industry is ran by the causal market.. Not us. Just because we are hyped/not hyped does not mean it is a success/failure.

To be fair to the Vita, It has a nice launch line-up but i just don't see any big titles that make me want to run out and pick it up.

It's a slick piece of tech with a solid launch lineup of games. However if local retailer stocks are anything to go by, this thing is facing a massive uphill challenge.

Of course, the 3DS was shaky out of the gate also, so we'll see where it's at in 6 months time.

Hardware is alright. Shame its main function is to be a dust collector.

Basically its not the PS2. Nothing ever will be again unless the market collapses and relaunches (again!). Which isn't that unlikely (if people don't adapt to new-gen and brands mean less, its open for a stronger competitor to come in after the market stagnates for a long period of time) - but still, Sony dropped the ball with PS3 and lost its brand and customer loyalty. Its one of the big brand failures of the 21st century; and yes their strategy to keep selling PS2's worked very well - but they forgot Microsoft/Nintendo were still competing with them as well.

Vita hardware is good. I just don't think its necessary. Too many wee bits and pieces to make it sound exciting, yet the back touch screen will most likely be underused by developers. Great graphics, but why is that important on a handheld? Some of the best DS games kept things simple (we already saw this fight lost with PSP VS DS - people wanted gameplay/games/affordability and a good system)

Vita looks good on paper. Its hardware is decent from a power perspective. From a consumer perspective its a bit rubbish, silly and really a bit unnecessary.

It is a fantastic piece of hardware but it has no games.

Not sure if serious?

But if you are, well you are talking out your ass.

It has games, a lot of good games, especially since it is only out.

It has more games at its a launch than the 3DS had, and out of those launch games a greater percentage are worth having.

I am not saying it is the new PS2, but those stating that the PS2 had more games etc, are stating like that when it first appeared in the market the PS2 had this huge library of games.

Nonsense! ..... it takes time to build a market presence and it takes time to build a library of games.

Sounds like the PSP when it first launch...only to start dying a few months later...

The hilarious part about it is that the PSP and PS2 had the same "easily ported" thing that Vita has with PS3 and .... not even 1/3 of the OMFG games from the ps2 were ported.

NO SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS !

We don't have US or EU sales numbers yet so how can we know this?

They're making assumptions based on the following reasoning: its predecessor sold well in one region, PSV is selling poorly in that region, therefore it will sell poorly everywhere.

I don't think it's going to do particularly well, but its launch lineup is more Western focused so perhaps it could surprise us in the West.

Add a caveat to exclude complete failures, then.

I simply don't see a relative level of technical parity between the PS2 and PSV.
I think Infinity Blade II looks better than anything on PSV personally, the iPhone 4 is approaching two years old, and isn't even a dedicated gaming device. The iPad 3 will probably completely outclass the PSV.

I'd say it's on par with PS2.

PSP was the real technical beast of the Sony systems in terms of it's peers.

Seriously, the OP is... baffling.

That could change when we see the NA and Euro sales numbers, but I kind of doubt it.

It does have a strong variety, but a lot of the games (for me) are franchises that I'm personally bored of now (Ridge Racer, Wipeout, Katamari, etc.).

I do not have doubt that great games are coming though (Ys, Ys, Ys!!!), so it's whatever. I just couldn't buy one at launch.

Of course, the 3DS was shaky out of the gate also, so we'll see where it's at in 6 months time.
The 3DS was pretty strong out of the gate, but quickly slowed down until the price drop and holiday games hit.

I think the Japanese launch was sort of similar (good first week, massive cratering right after).

The question is one of if Sony can do the old turnaround a second time.

Not sure if serious?
What I find cute is that whenever somebody says the Vita has no games (that they're interested in), people bring up the 3DS, even if the post they're frantically trying to tear apart made no mention, allusion or comparison to the 3DS. It's very telling.

Infinity Blade II isnt not even a real game. Lets keep this to real gaming please. :p

Great hardware, yes.
The PS2 wasnt competing against the a 3DS that had a year head start which was priced almost 40% less.
The PS2 wasnt competing with a device that nearly every person has which also plays games ( smartphone).
The PS2 was the successor of the previous gens winning console and the Vita isnt.
The PS2 included something that almost everyone wanted: DVD playback. Vita isnt. People dont care about OLED or always on when their iPhone does the same.

Vita is amazing hardware but at this point in terms of success thats all that it is.

I love my vita but I only own a few psp games for it. The launch line up is not good for everybody it caters to small specific crowds.

If you can't find anything you want to play on Vita at launch, you seriously need to expand your horizons.
