During this current generation I got back into PC Gaming, after a 11 year absence, and thanks to Steam I will not be getting any new consoles and just sticking with the PC.
Assuming the PS4 or Xbox 720 are released fall 2013, will you buy them on launch or would you wait a year or two before diving in? With a powerful gaming PC (2500k, 8GB, 6950), I am less inclined to jump in the queue for a brand new PS4 on launch for example.
Ever since the 360 debacle, I don't think I'll ever buy any console until a full year or two after launch. It seems like such a huge risk to buy a brand new console from the start. It's going to be expensive as fuck, barely any games, and probably has a huge power draw. Over a year or two, I would expect a slight decrease in price, a better range of games to be established and possibly to be more reliable if they decrease chipset size. I would hate to buy a console for it to completely fuck up a year and a half later. At this stage it would be out of warranty! To be honest, it would be nice if the console manufacturers offered extended warranty, for them to replace your old console with the latest iteration. For example, my 360 Elite is currently broken. I have to pay £62 to get it fixed. They're likely to resend me this crappy thing after I pay them, which will probably inevitable suffer from the RROD again, as opposed to rightfully giving the 360 Slim. If console manufacturers did this, then I would buy their unreliable consoles day one.
Also, companies like Sony tend to rebrand their consoles rather quickly with a slim iteration. It only took 2 years after releasing in Europe for a PS3 slim. So is it better to jump in, or better to wait a bit? The Vita itself is an interesting console, but if I were to ever to buy the thing, it would only be after the inevitable 'Vita Slim'.
Wii U - Day 1.
Xbox - Not sure, perhaps never. Haven't bought a disc 360 game in years, and I really dislike the advert-heavy MS frontend.
PS4 - As soon as games I want exist.
