I remember wanting one sooo badly.

It was worth it, I remember my screen was made by Intec, was black not purple and had a bigger screen, I also had the battery pack that attached on the bottom of the console that plugged right into the car outlet. I remember being in the back seat for a cross-country trip and playing my GC 85% of the trip, most enjoyable ride ever.

Oh man, I really wanted that but never got around to buying it. :(

It came with a power cable, car cigarette lighter cable, a headphone jack, stereo speakers within, etc. Amazon still sells 'em new for $120. With as many road trips that I took during that time period, I should've splurged. I'd make the Austin-to-New orleans-and-back trip every other month.. it would've been worth it.

And reading about this really makes me wishful, against all odds, that there's some sort of portable gaming function with the U..

(edit: and beaten)

Didn't Reggie or Iwata or someone mention at an event that we shouldn't pay too much attention to the console aesthetic?

If Nintendo has had to beef-up the specs, and they decide for whatever reason to rename the console (legal issues? re-branding strategery?)... then your predicton seems spot-on.

Maybe we'll end-up surprised by a totally, like, tubular awesome radical 1990s-style console design? That could be considered a secret, right?

(and bring on the tesselation and anti-aliasing... please!)
The initial Cafe rumors did point to a SNES style design. Or was it Super Fami?

So.. you're thinking multiple, eh?

That would be astonishing. I mean, keeping one final feature secret is one thing, but more than one.. I dunno.

They still need their Wii U motion control if you know what I mean.
the screen on the controller is opening new ways of gameplay, from the simplest to the most demanding one
and it is definitely a great feature but it's not even half the innovation they got on Wii

That's why I'm optimistic about Nintendo having more than one secret feature. Something that makes people say: Nintendo did it first!... again

Gaming industry folk are loose-lipped to the point where we'd know something.. right?

Well, considering we are two and a half months away from E3 and we know literally nothing about Wii U and its controller
I think it's safe to say, some ninjas are doing an excelent job :p

someone will new thread that and that site will be banned because they are pushing the limits of news reporting

I hope Nintendo changes the name so all of these blogs get hosed

Yah.. I remember some entertaining the idea of a Wii U exclusive, when in reality, I'd be shocked if it ends-up on the Wii U at all. Rockstar gave the Wii "consolation prize" games, I think I've mentioned.. and I don't see this changing.

It'd take the unholy mother of all moneyhats for the U to get this as an exclusive, and I think Nintendo would be much wiser to use their money in other ways.

They blaze the trails, take the heat for "doing their own thing," and then see the others follow. We should be used to this by now. :)

I don't know if its all that dramatic with Rockstar vs. Nintendo

to be fair Nintendo did gimp every hardware generation until now...
Gamecube was the most powerful and got no GTA because the little tiny cute disk did not have enough Space - the generation before that was no CD drive for you we are staying with CARTS

after the gamecube we had duct-tape gamecubes with no HD and new waggle madness

the kiddy and casual brand

I do not blame Rockstar if they ignore Nintendo forever but if WiiU is a different beast and all boxes have been checked off by Reggie :there is not a rolleyes gif big enough:

GTA V on the WiiU does not have to be a dramatic megaton level shock but simply good business sense with some Nintendo money and advertising not that GTA needs any ads to sell but to sell on a Nintendo Platform they need a push from Nintendo to change the image just a bit.

MadOdorMachine

No additional functions
That's what CD said, but the final decision will be up to Square. Nixxes would be a perfect candidate to handle a Wii U port. They've done great ports of TRU on the PS3 and Deus Ex on the PC.

TR is one of those games that Nintendo should be seeking out to be on the Wii U. It has a lot of hype and it's a game that will likely be released after the Wii U is on the market. So there's a chance that early adopters of the console will go with it over the other versions of the game (I know I would). The Batman's and Ninja Gaiden's are great, but most of the people that want them will already own them by the time the Wii U is available. Nintendo needs to focus on making sure those big end of the year titles are on the system.

No Tomb Raider is disappointing. I was hoping Konami would support it too, but they seem reluctant to do so. Either that or the NDA's are so tight publishers can't even announce games. Metal Gear Rising, Project Ogre and the rumored Castlevania 2 and Contra games should be no brainers. I can understand western publishers not supporting a Nintendo console, but I find it a bit disheartening when Japanese ones aren't releasing their biggest franchises.

There have been some games announced recently to lend credence to the NDA thing though. Resident Evil 6 and Epic Mickey 2 should both be on Wii U, yet they aren't announced for it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but at the same time don't want to get my hopes up.

Ha! Sweet!

Now we need a singing bush gif.

And who would be El Guapo?

Someone that has a plethora and is not a Yankee maricon.

Actually, back then, Rockstar was named DMA Design and they made the first GTA prototype, which came out for the N64 under the name of Body Harvest.

I have just always found it funny that they can get it onto the platforms, iOS, Android.. but it wasn't worth it for a GameCube edition. Not really a "dramatic" feeling I have.. just skeptical.
*shrug*

I could see Reggie offering ad support for 5, especially with Nintendo claiming that they're refocusing on the core audience. But then again, I don't credit Reggie with enough effort to get 4 either: he talked a good game to us fans, but from what I recall, he didn't do anything more serious in his efforts.

anyone have a link to the original WiiMote announcement I want to see that meltdown again
I am wondering if there is a major secret that could cause another shock

Putting the eShop on the Cloud instead of downloading your games?
Partnerships?

Something that makes Nintendo the laughing stock again but they make it a success?

Iirc, Rockstar has something personally against Nintendo. I think it was about a N64 game (body harvest? or something) that Nintendo initially asked them to do but later dropped plans of. This left the company in some distress, etc and they've continued to remember this.

I doubt many still have this sentiment anymore but who knows? I feel the GTA couldn't be on Gamecube because of size issues excuse pretty weak, when we have technological marvels such as RE2 on N64.

edit: semi-beaten.

IIRC, the original PS2 version of GTA3 weighted less than a GB and could even fit on a CD if you took out the radio stations.

GTAs tend the have a polarizing affect when they come out... all the mommy groups get on the media to boycott it for something.

I am Haitian and I remember the Haitian community making a huge deal about "Kill the Haitians" when Vice City came out - I downloaded from Steam on my Mac a week ago and love the games and while walking in Little Haiti I understood all the Haitian Creole being spoken could be the first game to feature that language in voice work. Meh I get it and I know the area of Miami very well so I don't think the game goes too far

San Andreas had HOT COFFEE sex

did not keep up with 4 but maybe Nintendo (the Disney of Video Games) did not want to publicly seek out this kind of heat?

While Reggie will boast if they do land GTA V he is not one to wear the tattoo

Nintendo's family image is very important to them regarless of the "kiddy" bullshit

What I am thinking is most of the people who got into GTA at the start are much older now some have families too and they may very well still love GTA

I don't really see the big deal unless Rockstar really has a hidden dislike for Nintendo the mobile move is good business

there was a lot of Gamecube excuses that made no sense, you could say the same about Wii but the fact is Nintendo gave these people the excuse they needed to publicly have an out from what fans wanted.

I think this is what you seek..

True, I could see Nintendo being actually relieved by it not being on their console. While I doubt we'd ever hear Nintendo come out and flatly say, "Naaah.. we don't need or want your game on our machine," I would prefer it if Reggie didn't come out and declare his desire to see the series on the Wii if Nintendo's true intent is to nurture that family image. It'd be a bit misleading.

This is one of those situations where it could be either side that's being disingenuous, or a bit on both sides.

(That said, I do tend to think that Grand Theft Auto's importance as a "get" for a console's library is sometimes overstated.)

good memory I never read anything like that before, I wonder how much of that is still a factor

MS does this all the time to devs they seem to still come out on top with support

I get very little from GTA games so I'm not too hurt if it never see's the Wii U, I'd buy it on PC anyway. But on the other hand I'd love to see Nintendo meet and exceed the Indie support that XBLA has seen, that would be cool.

Edit: I personally loved the initial TGS reveal of the Wiimote, one of the best imagination spinning moments I've seen in gaming.

So very true, I also wonder how long GTA's run at the top can last there are so many other major players out right now that can become a hardware seller, That is why I want to believe the move to 2013 to get out of the massive amount of similar blockbusters.

The remote unveil was thrilling to me. It's a shame that for the most part the actual uses for it didn't show much creativity.
But on the other hand I'd love to see Nintendo meet and exceed the Indie support that XBLA has seen, that would be cool.
I can't see that happening any time soon.

I hope Reggie has been licking rockstar boot. Earn that title of yours, Reggie.

I don't think people give nintendo enough credit these days when it comes to 3rd party relations. You can't really blame them or devs for a lack of 3rd party support on the Wii in 2012. Their pursuit of 3rd parties on the 3DS has been nothing short of admirable though. It certainly makes Sony look like they're sitting around with their thumbs up their asses.

The news we got at GDC of nintendo giving away development tools for free seems incredibly telling. It's unprecedented for the industry and completely out of left field for a company like nintendo. Iwata is the person I currently respect the most in this entire industry. More than Miyamoto or any other dev out there because he represents both sides of the coin - he's both a developer and a business man at heart. He's made mistakes in the past but has also been incredibly up front and honest about those mistakes. I think there's a good chance that he's leading the charge in trying to court 3rd parties for Wii U. I hope we're shocked come E3. I hope we're fucking floored with all the work that's been going on behind the scenes.

True, but I guess it largely depends on NiN and how well the games can sell. The Indie crowd is largely starting to abandon XBLA for Steam, so hopefully Nintendo see's a potential place to make headway there. And yeah, it's certainly not synonymous with "Nintendo's history" of appeasing a niche dev community, but I can dream can't I? :p
