Well there is that upcoming game from Gearbox called 'Colonial Marines'.

Which is going to be the prime example of why a sequel to Aliens was a stupid idea to begin with. You can't improve the perfect SCIFI Action Shooter.
Even worse since it's done by fans.

Prometheus seems to be the proper sequel/prequel that Alien never got.

I think it's more if you call it THE PREQUEL TO ALIEN, there are certain expectations that come with that regarding plot and tone.

If you call it FILM SET IN ALIEN UNIVERSE THAT CONTAINS SOME OF THE ALIEN DNA BUT IS ITS OWN THING you're much more free to do something that is:
1 - original
2 - good

Probably old for some alien experts but I'm reading some of the old concept for alien, I didn't really read much on them before, they seem to share quite a few similarities to prometheus:

No seriously, Alien is pretty much the movie it was from the very first script before Scott got involved. He brought a ton in terms of tone and direction, of course, but the notion that there were things in Alien that didn't make it in is wrong.

I'd say both Children of Men and Sunshine were much better than District 9 - which was a good film, but was not a great sci-fi film.

I'm not sure if this is what you guys are talking about but I think there were some elements that were changed before the final draft of the script:

"The pyramid and the derelict -two different elements- were still the subject of a seesaw debate when I came on the project. I would love to have shot it, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized it would have been wonderful in a three-hour version. What finally cracked it was the budget. We just had to get rid of it. And you know, sometimes financial practicalities force you to do a certain amount of editorial work, and I'm glad we simplified it."

Ugh, I struggle to watch really old sci fi. The dated special effects and the campy-ness tend to make it a labored watch for me.

Just because the script stayed pretty consistent from inception to execution doesn't mean they didn't play around a lot with it.

Here's one quote indicating how it changed from the first script

It [the Alien script] was a bone skeleton of a story then. Really terrible. Just awful. You couldn't give it away. It was amateurishly written, although the central idea was sound. Basically, it was a pastiche of fifties movies. We –Walter Hill and I– took it and rewrote it completely, added the Ash and the robot subplot. We added the cat Jones [note: they did not add the cat, just named it]. We fleshed it out, basically. If we had shot the original O'Bannon script, we would have a remake of IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE.

We know they were meant to find some ancient artifacts.

They enter the pyramid and there they find the eggs. They combined these two elements; they squeezed them together into one sort of uneasy entity. In my script, it was a space-going race that landed on the planet and had been wiped out by whatever was there, and now the Earthmen come and they endanger themselves in the same way. In the new version it's just sort of a surrealist mystery.

Looking at that site I linked before, look at all the bad reviews they have of Alien. Pretty damn funny now.

There is very little involvement with the characters themselves ... A generally good cast in cardboard roles.

It would be very convincing to say that there’s no hope for movies - that audiences have been so corrupted by television and have become so jaded that all they want are noisy thrills and dumb jokes and images that move along in an undemanding way, so they can sit and react at the simplest motor level. And there’s plenty of evidence, such as the success of Alien.

Oh, wow, can't wait to compare these to the bad reviews Prometheus is bound to get.
