Well there is that upcoming game from Gearbox called 'Colonial Marines'. :p

Which is going to be the prime example of why a sequel to Aliens was a stupid idea to begin with. You can't improve the perfect SCIFI Action Shooter.
Even worse since it's done by fans.

Prometheus seems to be the proper sequel/prequel that Alien never got.

I think it's more if you call it THE PREQUEL TO ALIEN, there are certain expectations that come with that regarding plot and tone.

If you call it FILM SET IN ALIEN UNIVERSE THAT CONTAINS SOME OF THE ALIEN DNA BUT IS ITS OWN THING you're much more free to do something that is:
1 - original
2 - good

edit - Yeah you "it's the chestburster" people are so wrong.

Can someone point out where they see the Alien on that? Cause I can't.
WHAT

They are pretty clearly using ideas that never made it into Alien. Which is smart because they'll feel true to the original.
WHAT

No seriously, Alien is pretty much the movie it was from the very first script before Scott got involved. He brought a ton in terms of tone and direction, of course, but the notion that there were things in Alien that didn't make it in is wrong.

So GAF, there is this chick that completely turns me off but always shows constant interest in me. She has been working on Prometheus and will no doubt be attending a cast and crew screening which may or may not include a +1. They normally do include a plus one, though.

Do I take one for Ridley?

If there is a +1, yes. Unequivocally, yes.

This is the mural that HR Giger worked on for one of the early scenes in the movie right?

Not sure how it would work but would be cool if
This was the Xenomorph version of the space Jockey, could be part of the reason Ridley loves to keep saying its not an Alien film for the surprise at the end ;)

I'm not sure if this is what you guys are talking about but I think there were some elements that were changed before the final draft of the script:

"The pyramid and the derelict -two different elements- were still the subject of a seesaw debate when I came on the project. I would love to have shot it, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized it would have been wonderful in a three-hour version. What finally cracked it was the budget. We just had to get rid of it. And you know, sometimes financial practicalities force you to do a certain amount of editorial work, and I'm glad we simplified it."

Ridley Scott, The Book of Alien.

I have the feeling that
this might be from the end of the movie after the ship crashed and he/she's the survivor with all the wounds
:(

David becoming human. That's veins on his dead forming
if the leaked script was anything to go by.

Also I don't like the fact that Space Jockey looks too human.

Umm holy shit wtf, do I need to watch the Alien movies? This looks really interesting and its a prequel right? So they went and 'found' the alien things? Then they Alien things went to earth?

Ugh, I struggle to watch really old sci fi. The dated special effects and the campy-ness tend to make it a labored watch for me.

Just because the script stayed pretty consistent from inception to execution doesn't mean they didn't play around a lot with it.

Here's one quote indicating how it changed from the first script

David Giler said:
It [the Alien script] was a bone skeleton of a story then. Really terrible. Just awful. You couldn't give it away. It was amateurishly written, although the central idea was sound. Basically, it was a pastiche of fifties movies. We –Walter Hill and I– took it and rewrote it completely, added the Ash and the robot subplot. We added the cat Jones [note: they did not add the cat, just named it]. We fleshed it out, basically. If we had shot the original O'Bannon script, we would have a remake of IT! THE TERROR FROM BEYOND SPACE.

We know they were meant to find some ancient artifacts.

Walter Hill said:
they had pyramids and hieroglyphics on the planetoid, a lot of Von Daniken crap

Here's some more quotes from that site:

Of course, O'Bannon's original script had the unisex cast tag, and the pyramid elements were being considered throughout conceptual stages, with both Ridley Scott and HR Giger commenting that they were cut for budgetary reasons and not due to Giler & Hill's discretion, (they are absent from the June 1978 final draft, but in earlier drafts, Giler & Hill created their own version of the pyramid and silo, known as the Cylinder). O'Bannon's creature did feature tentacles, likely a nod to Lovecraft's Cthulu deity.

H.R. Giger said:
In the original story the eggs were in a pyramid silo, like an Egyptian one, with hieroglyphics on the walls. I worked up the hieroglyphics which tell the story of the Alien. But it was too close, we found, to our own Egyptian culture and we thought it should be almost completely unearthly, so we designed another silo. But then the budget wasn't big enough to include this structure so we decided it would be a good idea to have these eggs inside the derelict like termites inside the walls of a house.

Dan O'Bannon said:
In the original script the men find a crashed derelict spacecraft and they enter it; they discover that the alien crew are all dead. They return to their own ship to contemplate what may have killed the alien crew and then they discover a pyramid on the planet which appears to be indigenous and primitive. They enter the pyramid and there they find the eggs. They combined these two elements; they squeezed them together into one sort of uneasy entity. In my script, it was a space-going race that landed on the planet and had been wiped out by whatever was there, and now the Earthmen come and they endanger themselves in the same way. In the new version it's just sort of a surrealist mystery.

Looks to me like they took up the Pyramid\Silo concept with the hieroglyphs for Prometheus. I see a mention of tentacles as well. It's not much, but it definitely dates back to Alien's production.

Uh yes.

Alien and Aliens both hold up great.

Alien especially. On Bluray it looks like it could have been released last year pretty much.

David Giler is so full of himself, cant stand the guy in the alien docs and stuff...

Looking at that site I linked before, look at all the bad reviews they have of Alien. Pretty damn funny now.

Variety said:
There is very little involvement with the characters themselves ... A generally good cast in cardboard roles.

Dave Kehr said:
An empty-headed horror movie with nothing to recommend it beyond the disco-inspired art direction and some handsome, if gimmicky, cinematography

Pauline Kael said:
It would be very convincing to say that there’s no hope for movies - that audiences have been so corrupted by television and have become so jaded that all they want are noisy thrills and dumb jokes and images that move along in an undemanding way, so they can sit and react at the simplest motor level. And there’s plenty of evidence, such as the success of Alien.

Oh, wow, can't wait to compare these to the bad reviews Prometheus is bound to get.
