GafStarter: interesting game projects on Kickstarter & co.

... Double Fine effect?

Anyway, here's the next game I think we should look into and spread the word about: Loc.

A fantasy-based 3D puzzle experience. Looks neat.

From what I can tell, their donations really spiked just a couple days ago, kinda late for the Double Fine effect, I think it was lots of promotion on gamer/tech websites. I saw it on IGN first, that's what led me to it. There's a list of a bunch of websites that had stories about them in the updates. They seem to be in the later updates, like 7 or 8 out of the 10.

Code Hero looks interesting. I have a similar prototype somewhere (although only very basic) called "game developers' diary". I hope they can make it into something great that teaches people to make games in an entertaining way (that's basically the pitch I guess but should be hard to actually achieve)

The Guncraft Kickstarter went up, its a PC and XBLIG game, its pretty fun for being in very early alpha. $15 gets you the game when its released and a beta key.

Kind of like Ace of Spades but with more Call of Duty and Battlefield aspects, the trailer they have up is a parody trailer.

Here's a neat one: Nubuwo Debut Bundle

Organized by multimedia content creators Jeriaska and Yoshi Miyamoto, this project brings together music by twelve innovative game-inspired artists. Proceeds will benefit the musicians and establish a gaming audio information resource in English and Japanese on the Nubuwo domain.

The album bundle features music by the composers of such game titles as Final Fantasy XIII, Plants vs. Zombies, PixelJunk SideScroller, Sound Shapes, Bit Pilot, Machinarium, ilomilo, Super Meat Boy, Kometen and NightSky, together with tracks by game-inspired artists SEXY-SYNTHESIZER (Touch My Katamari), Mega Ran (Black Materia) and K-Murdock (Hero Muzik).

Green Slime, you've beaten me, I was going to post that one too :)
There's some music I want (Clairvoyance, Binding of Isaac), some stuff I hate (...) and some stuff I have already (Machinarium, Super Meat Boy, Kometen, etc.) but all in all the rewards are very good.

Keep in mind that the Kickstarter project has only 5 days remaining (I don't know why).

Is there an OffTopic version of Gafstarter? There's this Kanji Poster thing that I think Gaffers learning Japanese would like.
How can you learn Japanese from a poster, you ask? In addition to listing the characters, we've included all common pronunciations, meanings, okurigana (accompanying characters), and number of brushstrokes, as well as dividing the kanji into 21 well-structured lessons. Best of all, the poster is laminated, so feel free to mark it up with dry-erase markers!

Sounds pretty useful if you're taking any Japanese Language classes.

This sounds interesting. It's a realistic tactical shooter by one of the guys who worked on the Ghost Recon series. They're asking for $200,000 but only have $18,000.
If you pledge $10,000 they will send you a Beretta 92FS 9mm handgun.

Just found out about this myself. If you have an interest in the classic Rainbow Six/Swat titles give it a look. Could be amazing.

Thread on it here, would be better for discussion probably http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=465260

Hey, my friend is currently trying to kickstart an RPG set in the 18th Century, during the French and Indian War and American War for Independence. I hope she gets the funding for it as she is an incredibly hard worker and has been trying to make this game a reality for years, now. It's quite a small budget too.

Anyway, here it is: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/seltaire/americana-dawn

Donating doesn't get you the game.

I think you get the money back if the project doesn't reach its goal. If the project reaches its goal then the project receives the total sum.

Double Fine aren't contractually obliged to do anything. They could take the money and run, but they won't.

I wonder if I could get a refund from Notch.

I remember Americana Dawn used to be on 8-Bit Funding. What turned me off of it was that the old description used to talk about how the character designs were taken from Hetalia: Axis Powers, though the rest of the content was new. Asking people to donate for a project cribbing something like that seemed like a cease-and-desist waiting to happen. However, looks like it's changed since. From the game's homepage (EDIT: and I see a similar thing at the bottom of the Kickstarter page now, too):
Is this a Hetalia fangame?
No. The creator does not watch anime. Originally, this was a joke coding project that continually grew. Over time, it changed. Most of the characters were erased. As it stands right now, the game only keeps a few homages to the show. The character designs, concepts, etc. were completely changed.

The Banner Saga, a game by the ex-Bioware employees that formed Stoic Studio hit Kickstarter. They don't reveal much of the gameplay, it's a turnbased RPG but the traditional 2d art steals the show just like it did when they first showed the project.

A free multiplayer version is scheduled for summer 2012, single player will be released in parts later on (and I assume not free).

Has a thread here - http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=464454 if you're interested in it.

Though the title of it probably needs updating to reflect that the kickstarter page is now up.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/paultozour/city-conquest-tower-defense-evolved

A tower-defense game for iDevices & Android by Paul Tozour, a veteran game designer who has worked in a lot of games (from WarBreads to Metroid Prime 3).

City Conquest is an innovative new strategy game for mobile devices that support HD/Retina quality graphics (iPad 2+, iPhone/iPod 4+, and high-end Android phones and tablets). It combines classic tower-defense gameplay with luscious HD graphics and a unique game mechanic that allows multiple players to send creeps against one another.

This results in a new form of gameplay that has the simplicity, accessibility, and addictive gameplay of tower defense, with much of the strategic depth and competitive multiplayer support of a real-time strategy (RTS) game -- and without the unit micromanagement of an RTS!

Backed this one. Looks pretty rad.

I'm still sad that my game of show at Eurogamer Expo 2011, Molecat Twist, never got anywhere near the funding it needed. Even after being advertised on Kotaku:

Ouch...I hope you'll consider trying again! I've heard of some indie studios doing 2-4 kickstarts with very low goals to get the funding they needed.

Maybe this will help:

Probably going to back this one for the art alone. Getting a really big Sleeping Beauty (Disney's version from the late 50's) vibe which is another plus.

Man that sucks! You guys should really try again! It seems that after the Double Fine kick, the site gets alot more attention.

But didn't know about the 10% term. 5% to kick starer and 5% to amazon? Seems like a large chunk if you consider the stuff that reaches like a million.
