Ninja Gaiden 3 |OT| Ninja Dog Revengeance

Lets be honest here, much of the previous games were like that as well.

The encounters were nowhere near as repetitive as they are in this game and they actually had interesting level design. The fights were more spread out and had you getting into more fights with lower numbers of enemies. Every fight in this game is like a battle of endurance, can see where the dynasty warriors mentions were coming from. Also doesn't help that you're restricted to one weapon and the gimped ut\ninpo system.

You know I'm really impressed with NG3 so far. Impressed with the fact that they managed to implement an even worse camera then previous entries.

it's like the ambushes in NG1 over and over again!

If it had solid, balanced combat and tons of enemy and item/subweapon variety + upgrades, that would be awesome.

Seriously. Let's all pray that this game bombs terribly.

I said it earlier, and it's anecdotal. But, I've never been able to go into family video the day after a release and get a new game. You have to get in there launch day by mid afternoon or it's not happening. When I went there to return Resident Evil, not a single Ninja Gaiden was rented. That was crazy to see. Two other copies were rented out just now when I brought it back. If that is any indication, it's not doing too hot.

why the fuck are people buying this?

out of sheer formality?

seriously, i love ninja gaiden but don't ever plan on playing that shit.

you're absolutely right. I would never support this game. I knew it was going to be terrible, but I was still curious so I rented it. Well got a free trial from Gamefly, so I got to play it for nothing.

Has Team Ninja responded to the overwhelming hatred yet? Or are they gonna go down the Slant Six route and say that they have no idea why there is hate (Slant Six said it about ORC)?

it's just a shame. a big crying shame.

this year I have to deal with a shit Resident Evil, a shit Devil May Cry, AND a shit Ninja Gaiden.

this series is supposed to be unique and cater to it's fans. trying to sell it to the masses is just a bad idea and is only alienating the people who would have enjoy it in the first place.

I have never known anyone who isn't like minded, get remotely excited over something like ninja gaiden enough to buy it. "that looks too crazy for me" is the usual response.

if people just didn't buy it (because it's SHIT) we might not have to put up with it next time since Hayashi and his group of dopes won't be there. hayashi even talked shit on bayonetta!

The guy has no sense of gameplay which is REQUIRED to produce a ninja gaiden. they had a ton of assets and used almost none of it.

even supporting it out of curiosity is a bad idea in my opinion.

Returned my preorder today... also sad that I wasted my time making the OP for this. I never expected this.

I'm still in the beginning, but this game just isn't bad to me. Perhaps it gets worse, but right now it's pretty cool. Ninja Gaiden has never really been something I've been into, so this is me just judging it on a power game basis. No way this is a fucking 3/10. That is a bullshit score...

the review is based on the fact that its the third in the series. If you didn't like or play the previous gmes, its understandable why you won't agree with the review. If you did and loved them, the review is spot on.

This would have been better as a spin off instead of the third in a series. :-(

I've played the games as well, and while it falls short in almost all the areas that matter, it's nowhere near the disaster or travesty that people are trying to make it out to be.

The game has unresponsive controls. That right there in an action game is an automatic 5/10. Add in all the other stupid design choices and 3/10 make sense

The others had major flaws as well though. They were never on some elite status, but they were good games. I played a good portion of the first one, and a little of the second until the camera started hanging and slow down ensued. They were fun, but seriously held back by poor design choices. This game just isn't that bad in comparison.

I haven't had a single issue yet. Do later enemies expose issues to greater effect?

That depends. If this were a generic action title, it would merely be par for the course. The problem is, this is a numbered Ninja Gaiden game, and as a part of a pre-exisiting franchise is held to the standards of its predecessors. It is held to certain standards already established. This isn't to say a game has to be exactly the same as its previous iterations - but many reviewers rate games against that which they try to be - or that which they set out to accomplish. So if Team Ninja set out to make a generic action title then sure... generic it is... 7/10. If they set out to make a Ninja Gaiden game (which I'm assuming that they did, given that I see Ryu swinging a sword around), then they failed miserably. It's like Episode I of Star Wars... a pretty generic and forgettable film with a bad story. But they made it a Star Wars movie, and it has to be held against the standards of the canon it was placed into... and that's how you get 3/10. You might not say this is a fair way to do things (although I'd say it's perfectly fair), but that's how it is in many cases. It isn't hyperbole to call something a disservice when it carries a beloved title and fails to deliver on some of the most fundamental expectations of it.

i get why the hardcore action community is less than enthralled with this. i'm enjoying this in the same way i enjoy god of war or a more basic meat & potatoes action game. i don't know that team ninja would have been better served to attempt to clone another ng++++, so i can understand the decision to go for a bigger market.

i think with ng and dmc, and the 3rd person action genre in general, there has to be evolution. ng3 is a valid attempt to streamline the experience. i'm sure team ninja was well aware that it would be poorly received by the fan base.

You gotta respect his unwavering and unqualified optimism in the face of any and all legitimate negatives. It's cute.

i do respect it. it would be far easier to lament the changes to the game and indirectly big up your action game skills. pretty much what everyone is doing in this thread.

It pretty much does everyone a disservice, casuals and hardcore alike.

Lamenting gets things done. It voices opinions. It reinforces change. Mass Effect 3's ending is one such example. If everyone's an optimist, you're going to continue playing shit. So while I can understand you being tired of the critcism, you should at least appreciate what negativity has to offer.

This is a good action game, and a sub-par Ninja Gaiden game. It does plenty of things right. The gameplay is the main thing in question right now, and while it doesn't do it on the same level as the first two games, it's still not an abomination worthy of a 3/10. Or if it does deserve a 3/10, it deserves the current score inflation that games get on all review sites these days, so basically a 7.5.

Ez, I love you man, but it continues to befuddle me the stuff you spew out. Okay, DmC has no demo yet so no one really knows how it plays. This is a full released game, and you as someone experienced in the genre, can still accept all the shortcomings on gameplay? Where do you draw the line man?

that would be relevant if this wasn't a legitimate opinion. not everybody thinks the game is shit. i'm not tired or bothered by the criticism.

That excuse would kind of work for me if the other areas of the game weren't so lacking. The combat is still kind of fun at the end of the day but the lazy encounter design and lack of enemy\weapon variety really hurts it as well. Theres really no excuse for that kind of thing and I don't see how they're changes that the bigger market would appreciate. Also the whole "draw in the casuals" thing doesn't really fit in with every single encounter featuring wave after wave of enemies, offscreen rocket spam and ridiculously damaging throws. I am playing on hard though, maybe they aren't there on normal.

Offscreen rocket spam is no big deal though, while it's kind of stupid, you can easily jump and spam arrow until they're all gone. The main problem I have is the throws, definitely. Not being able to dodge cancel out of combos is an issue. I don't know why this wouldn't be in the game. It just fucks everything up. I'm playing Master Ninja Mode and I'm getting dominated at the end of the game right now. I hate that the game punishes you for dying by giving you a smaller life bar to start off with, and this game not having potions kind of sucks too.

Offscreen rocket spam isn't a big deal to people that have played the previous games but it seems like something that would irritate people new to the genre. Which was apparently who this game was trying to appeal to. Theres just bizarre design decisions all over the place. And yeah, being stuck with a small lifebar at times + no potions seems like another choice that flies in the face of their more accessible goal.

Uhhh, do the amount of enemies per wave decrease if I lower the difficulty? 6 straight waves of the same shit and I just turned the game off.

I don't understand how this is evolution. This would be the equivalent of humans evolving into monkeys (or more accurately into really dumb fish).

Except this isn't anywhere even close to as good as God of War, as far as first levels go. Like, at all.

None of this post makes any sense. DMC4 was the best selling in the series and a hugely successful game, I'm pretty sure NG2 didn't do too poorly either. How are they going to get more market share by turning their backs on their already large established fanbase. Further still who's going to be interested in this kind of product?

Beyond that would you like to explain what's evolved and what's been streamlined as opposed to making baseless statements? From most of the impressions I've heard neither of those things seem to be the case, just everything's been made worse.

daamn. I have a JP premium box for sigma 2 that's opened but mint. I wonder what that would fetch. I don't see any on ebay...

At this point I've invested so much time into the series across all the games that I feel obliged in a way. As a NG fan I would rather play it and be disappointed by it on my own terms.
As a huge fan who owns every version of NG1 and 2 from multiple regions, I didn't feel obligated, but I was genuinely curious and sort of excited despite the rumblings. Oh god how I wish there were people other than IGN who had the balls to warn me away from this game. I would never ever had bought it for no other reason than that I'm a fan if I knew how I would have felt within 30 seconds of turning it on for myself.

It's not a good action game by any stretch of imagination. It's a trite, shallow, and mindless exercise in tedium and frustration. The only thing it does right is that it's a functional piece of software that doesn't crash every time you press a button.

I don't understand how this is evolution. This would be the equivalent of humans evolving into monkeys (or more accurately into really dumb fish).
